When Could Southwest Airlines Change Its Seating Policy? Travel EXPERTS Weigh In.

Over here, we have a love for Southwest Airlines!

It makes sense when they offer some great deals and discounts on airfare, and what’s not to love about the “two free checked bags” policy? These are just a couple of the things that sets Southwest Airlines apart from the rest. That being said, one of their most unique policies could be changing soon and we have thoughts from the experts. Let’s talk about it!

What policy are we talking about? We’re talking about Southwest Airlines’ seating policy. You know, the one where you don’t get an assigned seat (just a letter and number indicating your boarding group) meaning that when you board, you get to pick any open seat that you want.

So what about this policy could be changing? Well, according to CNBC, in response to a weaker first quarter, Southwest CEO Bob Jordan recently shared “We’re looking into new initiatives, things like the way we seat and board our aircraft.”

Interestingly, for years Southwest has been asked by analysts about things like opportunities for premium seating or other additional fees. Southwest does offer its Early Bird program, which lets you pay a little extra to board early (but you’re still not guaranteed your seating), but these comments from CEO Jordan could see the company shift from its policy to only have a single class, to a multi-class cabin.

Jordan has mentioned that at the moment no decisions have been made on the changes Southwest will make. He also double-downed that Southwest is not considering charging for checked bags (all Southwest Airlines fans can rejoice!).
