Disneyland Unions Ask California Governor to Delay Reopening

This week, a union group representing 17,000 Disneyland Resort Cast Members sent a letter to California Governor Gavin Newsom expressing their concerns over “Disney’s rapid timetable” for reopening.

While the Disneyland Resort issued a plan for a phase reopening beginning July 9th, that plan is still awaiting government approval.

The Coalition of Resort Labor Unions, which is comprised of several local unions, issued a letter via email to Newsom on Wednesday, which read in part:

The COVID 10 pandemic is the greatest challenge our Unions and our members have ever faced. Our first priority is our members’ health and safety.

Disney wants clearance from the government to reopen the Disneyland Resort in July. Unfortunately, despite intensive talks with the company, we are not yet convinced that it is safe to reopen the parks on Disney’s rapid timetable.

The letter details meetings with Disney, but says that the company hasn’t responded to safety proposals from the CRLU member unions.

Therefore, at this point we do not know if the resort can be operated safely.

Disneyland is scheduled to reopen Downtown Disney on July 9th, Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure on July 17th, and Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa and Disney’s Paradise Pier Hotel on July 23rd.
