We’ve been wondering a lot about how the historic closures of the Disney parks might affect the progress of Disney’s upcoming attractions.

Well, Disney just gave us a little bit of an update. With the recent announcement of a full re-theme of Splash Mountain in Disney World and Disneyland, Disney provided a little insight into how this project and the closures have affected projects such as Avengers Campus in Disney California Adventure and TRON: Lightcycle Run in Magic Kingdom.

D23 recently sat down with the president of Walt Disney Imagineering Bob Weiss to discuss the evolution of the Splash Mountain attraction and the other attractions currently in progress. Weiss explained that the Imagineers are still evaluating various project timelines based on the effects of the park closures.

Some projects, luckily, will be “able to surge forward based on where we were in development,” Weiss explains. He specifically mentions Avengers Campus as an example of a project that will be back on its feet quickly — in Disney California Adventure and Disneyland Paris. As a reminder, the Avengers Campus opening was delayed by the closures of the parks.

On the other hand, some projects will need to be picked back up in stages, like Disneyland’s Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway and Magic Kingdom’s Tron: Lightcycle Run. Beyond that, there are even some longer-term projects that Imagineers are still assessing.

The Splash Mountain re-theme is one that does not yet have a set timeline, but Imagineers are working with operations partners to get it started. As of right now, we can expect to ride Splash Mountain in its current form when we return to both Disney World and Disneyland.
