Back in March, we learned Ample Hills Creamery, a popular ice cream spot at Disney’s BoardWalk Inn with a new location going into Disney Springs had filed for bankruptcy.
While we knew this was a strategic move on the owners’ part to restructure and refocus the business, we didn’t really know what the final outcome would be. Now, it appears the original founders of the company are stepping away and the new owners will be taking over.
Ample Hills Creamery was founded in Brooklyn in 2011 by Brian Smith and Jackie Cuscuna. According to a post on Ample Hill’s Instagram, the couple has made the painful decision to move on from the business. The brand, scoop shops, and factory will all continue to operate under new leadership.
The new owners of Ample Hills Creamery is a company called Schmitt Industries. Its CEO, Mike Zapata, is a former Navy SEAL and U.S. military combat veteran. Zapata (whose wife and children are also big fans of Ample Hills) says they are, “100% committed to preserving the integrity of the brand, and are working side by side with long-standing Employees to ensure the company reflects something we can all be proud of.”
Still, many fans are concerned with Brian and Jackie no longer in the picture, the general vibe and atmosphere of Ample Hills Creamery could change. This brand has an incredibly loyal fan base who has already begun to express their concerns to Ample Hills Creamery’s new management in the absence of the original founders. Folks are worried Ample Hills Creamery could be heading in a more corporate direction, subsequently, losing its unique charm and family appeal.
We’ll certainly be following this story as well as the development of the new Ample Hills Creamery location at Disney Springs to see what changes, if any, the new owners decide to make!
