According to paperwork filed with the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity, Mears Transportation Group in Orlando laid off an additional 104 employees in July. In June, the company laid off 72 employees at its corporate offices.
Prior to the pandemic, the company had 950 employees. The company furloughed most of its workers in April, but has since brought many back and is currently at around 650 employees.
There were three round of layoffs in July, with 74 of those employees let go at the corporate offices and 11 at another sales and customer service location. The remaining 19 worked at the Orlando International Airport (MCO) assisting with Mears shuttles and taxis, along with Disney’s Magical Express.
Mears told laid off employees that they intended to rehire positions as business returns and has set up a fast-track rehire process for affected workers.
Roger Chapin, executive vice president of public affairs, tried to stay hopeful:
We are adjusting through the environment, as businesses are today. The goal is to keep the doors open for the return of business — whenever that happens — and rehire employees as we can.
