Today, the state of California announced its reopening guidelines for theme parks, which, of course, includes Disneyland.

Under the new guidelines, Disneyland will only be able to reopen once Orange County, California — the county in which they are located — reaches the Yellow or Minimal tier, or less than 1 daily new case of COVID-19 per 100,000 people. And once the county reaches that tier, they can only be open to 25% total capacity, indoor dining and drinking establishments within the park can only be operating at 25% and there must be a reservation system.

In response, Erin Guerrero, Executive Director of the California Attractions and Parks Association, has issued a scathing statement, saying that “calling the announcement disappointing would be a grave understatement.”

“The governor has not used science or data to inform his decision,” she wrote. “Theme parks have opened and operated safely around the world for months. Data and science prove that theme parks can reopen responsibly anywhere — there is no rational reason to believe they can’t do so in California.” She also called California Governor Gavin Newsom’s plan a “Keep Theme Parks Closed Indefinitely” Plan.

Following massive layoffs across Disney’s Parks, Experiences, and Products Division, Guerrero stated that this plan “prolongs unemployment for tens of thousands of people, hastens bankruptcy for families and small business owners adjacent to the parks, and contributes insolvency for local governments whose budgets rely on parks as an anchor economic driver.” Read her full statement below, via @TheDCLBlog:

Even before today’s news, California’s proposals proved to be controversial, and the guidelines announcement had been delayed and called “set up without regard to actual fact” by Disney CEO Bob Chapek. Following the guidelines, Disneyland President Ken Potrock released a statement, as did Anaheim Mayor Harry Sidhu, all saying these plans hurt the local economy.
