Although we’ve gotten some initial details on the reopening guidelines reportedly proposed for theme park reopenings in California, the official guidelines have not yet been released by Governor Newsom.
Many urged Newsom not to finalize the guidelines without input from the theme parks themselves. Now, it appears Newsom is taking some existing regulations in theme parks outside of California into consideration while working on finalized versions of the guidelines.
According to The Orange County Register, Governor Newsom sent a team out to Florida last week to visit Walt Disney World and other theme parks in Florida. Kate Folmar, a spokesperson for the California Health and Human Services Agency, said the team was sent out to “open and operating theme parks out of state…to assess the health safeguards in practice.”
Folmar noted that “These visits will help inform [their] pending theme park guidance.” The central purpose of these visits was to answer the following question: “What can California learn from other states that have successfully reopened sectors of the economy?” According to Governor Newsom, he has a whole team that spends their time working on getting the answer to that question, so they made an effort to “actually find out directly by sending [their] own team to these sites, as related to theme parks, to get a better sense of what’s going on.” Governor Newsom said that they wanted to see things for themselves.
In a press conference held yesterday, Newsom said that his team was looking for “what’s worked in their states and what hasn’t worked in their states as it related to guidance, as it relates to mandates[, and] as it relates to messaging.” One goal was to try to get a better handle on what they’ve been told, what they’ve read about, and their own concerns regarding what makes theme parks unique.
Newsom said he wants his team to “come back and tell [him] what they saw…because this is serious.” This on-the-ground research will help inform the theme park reopening guidelines being developed.
Although one California official noted that the guidelines were “very close”, Newsom has recently indicated that he is in “no hurry” to release them. California officials have also noted that they have no promise of a specific date for the release of the guidelines. That leaves Disneyland, and the other California theme parks in a state of “limbo” at the moment.
Still, some signs show that Disneyland is getting ready to reopen as soon as it is able to. We’re keeping an eye out for any news related to the reopening of the Disneyland Resort theme parks, and we’ll let you know as soon as we see any updates!
