The Disneyland Resort theme parks have been closed for several months now.
Although the California government’s theme park reopening guidelines were set to be issued last week, they were later postponed following pushback from several sources.
We’ve gotten some early details of what the guidelines may contain, but no official word yet. Early last week, one source noted that the reopening guidelines were “very close.”
The initial draft of the theme park reopening guidelines from the state reportedly called for reopening theme parks at 25% capacity only once the county they are in reaches the “Minimal” tier. California’s reopening plan includes a tiered system based on each county’s metrics of cases and tests.
Each county’s metrics are assessed every Tuesday and their tier status is then re-evaluated. Last week it was revealed that Orange County, the county where Disneyland is located in California, would be remaining in its current tier. Orange County is currently in the “Substantial” Tier — meaning that some non-essential indoor business operations are closed.
Although the state’s guidelines reportedly specify that theme parks may only open when their counties reach the “minimal” tier, local Orange County health authorities are now suggesting otherwise. According to The Orange County Register, the Orange County Health Care Agency is now recommending that Disneyland Resort and Knott’s Berry Farm be allowed to reopen once Orange County moves to the “Moderate” tier.
Clayton Chau, a county health officer and agency director, says Orange County health officials have been working closely with Disney to prepare for the reopening of their theme parks. Disney officials have noted that once they have a “clearer understanding of when theme parks can reopen from the State of California,” they’ll be able to “work with the state and Orange County Health Care Agency toward a reopening date.”
The Orange County Register reports that Orange County could move to the “moderate” tier within the next few weeks.
This is all a developing situation, so we’ll be on the lookout for more updates and let you know what we find.
