Big Details Regarding Upcoming ‘Star Wars’ Series and Films Announced!

Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm, announced today during Disney’s Investor Day presentation that Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni, the minds behind The Mandalorian, will be creating two new series that will further expand the Star Wars universe.

The two brand-new series will be entitled Star Wars: Rangers of the New Republic and Star Wars: Ahsoka. The targeted release date for the two series is Christmas 2021.

It was also announced that Diego Luna will reprise his role as Cassian Andor in the upcoming Disney+ series Star Wars: Andor. The series is set to release in 2022, and production began on the series two weeks ago in London.

Hayden Christensen will be returning as Darth Vader in the Deborah Chow-directed Disney+ series, Obi-Wan Kenobi. Production on the series begins in March 2021.

Kennedy also announced that Justin Simien, creator of Dear White People, is developing a limited run series based on Lando Calrissian.

Another upcoming Star Wars series, The Acolyte, will highlight the final days of the High Republic era. Russian Doll director, Leslye Headland, will helm the series.

A Droid Story, a series featuring the lovable R2D2 and C3PO, is also in development.

Taika Waititi is currently writing a new Star Wars feature film. Kennedy described the new adventure as “fresh, unexpected and unique.”

Kennedy concluded by saying that the next Star Wars feature film, Rogue Squadron, will be directed by Patty Jenkins. The film is set to release in theaters Christmas 2023.

Kennedy stated that these new offerings usher in “a new era for Star Wars and Lucasfilm.”
