Why SO Many MORE People Ride These Disney World Rides

There are a LOT of rides in Disney World, and some of them get through WAY more folks than others.

Expedition Everest

With all the hubbub about capacities in a reopened Disney World and our constant interest in wait times, we’re wondering which Disney World attractions actually have the HIGHEST capacities — and maybe you are too!  We’re looking at the top five highest capacity attractions in each Disney World park!

Unless otherwise noted, the capacity figures we’re using are in how many people the ride can seat (MAXIMUM!) per hour according to TheParkDatabase. That means that these figures are estimated without taking any technical difficulties or slowdowns into account.

Magic Kingdom

The highest capacity ride in Magic Kingdom might surprise you, but it’s actually the Tomorrowland Transit Authority Peoplemover with 4,600 people per hour. In fact, this is the highest capacity ride in ALL of Disney World! We always wondered why this SUPER popular attraction usually has a pretty short wait; turns out, it’s just running LOTS of guests through!

The Peoplemover Track above The Lunching Pad

We have a tie for second place with Haunted Mansion and Pirates of the Caribbean both boarding 3,200 people per hour. This is another case where you can often find relatively short waits for these very popular rides sometimes all thanks to how many guests can ride.

Haunted Mansion

The third highest capacity attraction in Disney World is Walt Disney World Railroad with a measure of 3,150 people per hour. These large real-life methods of transportation tend to be able to hold a LOT of people even though they don’t come by TOO too frequently (in fact, right now the Railroad is closed!). Plus the train cars are MUCH larger than your typical ride vehicle.

Disney World Railroad

At. 3,000 people per hour, “it’s a small world” takes fourth place for Magic Kingdom. That means that in a given day, more than 30,000 people can get that earworm of a song stuck in their heads. 😉

And finally, the fifth-highest capacity attraction in Magic Kingdom is Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, taking 2,400 people per hour through the WILDEST RIDE IN THE WILDERNESS!

EPCOT

Another surprising one comes in first for EPCOT too! Head on over to the Imagination Pavilion to ride the highest capacity ride in this park. Yup, it’s Journey Into Imagination with Figment at 2,570 people per hour!

Imagination Pavilion

As we saw with Haunted Mansion in Magic Kingdom, Omnimover attractions can definitely get a lot of guests in and out quickly. Maybe that’s why Spaceship Earth is coming in second with 2,400 people per hour!

Spaceship Earth

Traveling through the history of communication isn’t the only Omnimover in EPCOT either. At a capacity of 2,200 people per hourThe Seas with Nemo & Friends is the third-highest volume attraction in EPCOT. Those clamshells keep chuggin’ along all day long!

The Seas With Nemo and Friends

We’re actually spotting a bit of a trend here with boat rides too (but not all boat rides are made equal!). You won’t find Frozen Ever After on this list (those boats are relatively small compared to others on the list!), but Gran Fiesta Tour in the Mexico Pavilion sure can push guests through. It’s got a capacity of 1,660 people per hour!

Gran Fiesta Tour

Tied for the fifth-highest attraction in EPCOT are Mission: SPACE and Living with the Land at 1,600 people per hour. It’s certainly interesting how the EPCOT attractions with the highest wait times didn’t make the top five of capacity!

Mission Space

Disney’s Hollywood Studios

The top capacity attraction in Disney’s Hollywood Studios is Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway! We found this capacity figure ourselves. A Cast Member told us that there are 8 trains running at any given time, there are 32 seats per train, and the ride (including loading and unloading) comes in at about 6 minutes (so 10 loops per hour for each vehicle). That means the attraction can seat 2,560 people per hour! Keep in mind this is just our estimate and could be slightly higher or lower than the figure we landed on.

Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway

Hollywood Studios has the lower end of capacity averages in Disney World which certainly could contribute to the high wait times in the park overall. Outside of Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway, none of the rides breach the 2,000 people per hour mark. Star Tours — The Adventures Continue comes in second with 1,900 people per hour.

Star Tours

We’ve got a tie for third! Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster comes in at 1,800 people per hour and the LA Times estimates that Millennium Falcon Smugglers Run is the same. Both of these attractions are pretty popular and we do see lines get long but you can sometimes spot low waits too!

Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster

The Orange County Register estimates that the Disneyland Rise of the Resistance (the same design as Disney World’s!) has a capacity of about 1,700 people per hour. This puts it firmly in our fourth-highest capacity spot! Keep in mind this attraction is often plagued with frequent breakdowns and technical problems, so we suspect they frequently don’t hit their max capacity each day!

Rise of the Resistance

And the fifth-highest capacity attraction in Hollywood Studios is The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror with a capacity of 1,260 people per hour. That’s a lot of guests plummeting in an elevator!

Disney’s Animal Kingdom

These highest capacity attractions just keep surprising us! Animal Kingdom’s winner is Kilimanjaro Safaris, taking 3,000 people per hour through the Harambe Wildlife Reserve. This BLOWS our minds considering this attraction takes over 20 minutes!

Kilimanjaro Safaris

Although you are in real cars on Kilimanjaro Safaris and as we saw with the Walt Disney World Railroad, real-life transportation can hold a LOT of people! The same is true on the Wildlife Express Train with a capacity of 2,500 people per hour

Wildlife Express Train

The third-place capacity ride just might be the SCARIEST in Animal Kingdom — it’s DINOSAUR over in Dinoland U.S.A. Every hour, 2,400 people are sent back in time to contend with aggressive dinos and meteors! Let’s go get that dino!

Dinosaur

Boarding 2,050 people per hour, Expedition Everest has the fourth-highest capacity in Animal Kingdom. This one doesn’t surprise us too much since this mega-popular attraction often has wait times of 30 minutes or lower!

Expedition Everest

And our fifth-highest capacity attraction in Animal Kingdom is Na’vi River Journey with 1,920 people per hour. It’s another boat ride! Ah, to be one of those folks watching the shaman animatronic do her thang.

Na’vi River Journey

Wow! Some of these capacity numbers sure surprised us! It’s interesting to see how these figures have an effect on wait times too. Disney seems to have struck gold with their reliable Omnimovers and the larger boat rides don’t do too shabby either! Now to find out which rides have the WORST capacity so we can plan our day to knock those out! Keep up with DFB for more interesting Disney facts!
