After being closed for nearly a year, Disneyland announced the end of their annual pass program.

Even though there is a new membership program in the works, and previous annual passholders are now referred to as Legacy Passholders, there are still lots of questions to be answered. Now, we’ve got another update on the future of Disneyland passholders. 

According to Orange County Register, Disneyland is considering eliminating the monthly payments for annual passes. This conclusion comes from passholder surveys by Disney. The surveys have asked current passholders about ticket option combinations, and pricing for the new membership that’s in progress.

The question on the survey asks what guests would have done if monthly payments were no longer available. It allows guests to answer if they would not have a pass, would get a less expensive pass, or keep the pass at the current level.

Lane Hart from Blooploop mentioned that the introduction of monthly payments caused some of Disneyland’s crowding problems. He continues that “Crowd levels at California theme parks had now surged to the point where there was really no longer a slow season for Disneyland or California Adventure.” Hart further explains that “tourists arriving from afar who may have tried to plan a trip to visit in what they thought was a slower season were often shocked at how crowded the park was.”

Theme park expert from Farmingdale State College, Martin Lewison, made a statement that “the introduction of the monthly payment options had a stimulative effect – not just at Disney but across the industry.” He believes that Disneyland’s annual pass program is very profitable and popular. According to analysts, 50% of Disneyland guests were annual passholders, and before the parks closed analysts predicted that Disneyland had about a million passholders.

Based on another Disneyland guest survey, Disney will take prices, preferred times to visit, and visitation frequency into consideration when crafting the new membership program. The program could also consider passes based on the time of day people would be visiting the parks.

Anaheim officials recently voted in support of a bill that would speed up Disneyland’s reopening. We’ll be looking out for more information on the status of Disneyland’s new membership program and when the parks could fully reopen again.
