It was tough to be a Castmember in Disney World today. Rise of the Resistance had operational issues in the morning, and it looks like a small but significant number of guests are ignoring Disney’s mask compliance guidelines. Neither of those things is good.
We counted 480 of 500 guests (96%) wearing masks in EPCOT according to Disney’s guidelines. 96% isn’t the lowest we’ve seen – the lowest was 94%, but it’s below the steady 98% that we were seeing a few weeks ago.
The vast majority of mask policy non-compliance in the parks is when guests – and it’s almost always men – drink while walking around. Today, 18 of the 20 non-compliant guests at EPCOT were men drinking and walking. Here’s an example:
There are a number of concerns here, obviously: more-contagious COVID variants have been detected in Florida, so not wearing a mask now will lead to even worse outcomes than before; and the more that other guests see non-compliance, the harder it is to enforce compliance.
The good news is that 96% mask compliance is almost certainly better than you’ll find in any city in America. Disney World really is its own bubble of pretty virtuous behavior.
It’s obviously really hard to remind guests all day, every day, about the mask policy – men can be confrontational about the mask policy, and the burnout from enforcing the policy has to be palpable. But it has to be done. Disney (and Disney’s Castmembers) have worked very hard for the last 8 months to ensure the parks operate as safely as possible. We hope they can find a way to nudge guests back into safe practices.
Beyond that, wait times in the parks were moderate to low today. And we received 107 actual wait times from our fabulous Lines community. Let’s do the rest of the numbers.
Magic Kingdom Wait Times
Peter Pan’s Flight had an average wait time today of 21 minutes. Its 7-day average is 31 minutes, so today ranks #6 for this week. Its 30-day average is 28 minutes, so today ranks #24 for the past month. Its 365-day average is 38 minutes, so today ranks #208 for the past year. We received 6 actual wait times today, and the actual wait averaged 114% of the posted wait time.
Animal Kingdom Wait Times
Avatar Flight of Passage had an average wait time today of 26 minutes. Its 7-day average is 31 minutes, so today ranks #3 for this week. Its 30-day average is 31 minutes, so today ranks #14 for the past month. Its 365-day average is 59 minutes, so today ranks #176 for the past year. We received 6 actual wait times today, and the actual wait averaged 77% of the posted wait time.
Hollywood Studios Wait Times
Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring Mott the Hoople had an average wait time today of 27 minutes. Its 7-day average is 31 minutes, so today ranks #4 for this week. Its 30-day average is 31 minutes, so today ranks #19 for the past month. Its 365-day average is 48 minutes, so today ranks #208 for the past year. We received 5 actual wait times today, and the actual wait averaged 58% of the posted wait time.
Rise of the Resistance had a rough start to the morning. Hollywood Studios officially opened at 9 AM, and on days like that, Rise usually starts calling boarding groups at 8:30 AM. Boarding started two hours later than that today – at 10:30 AM. That immediately made today the worst day of performance over the past week, and Rise hasn’t been able to make up ground during the day. It’d be a stretch for Rise to get to boarding group 100 today.
EPCOT Wait Times
Frozen Ever After had an average wait time today of 19 minutes. Its 7-day average is 22 minutes, so today ranks #4 for this week. Its 30-day average is 23 minutes, so today ranks #19 for the past month. Its 365-day average is 50 minutes, so today ranks #229 for the past year. We received 4 actual wait times today, and the actual wait averaged 76% of the posted wait time.
