What We’re Talking About: Blue Sky Studios, Hercules, and the Star Wars Trading Post

With this week’s edition of What We’re Talking About, Joe shares why he’s sad that Blue Sky Studios is closing, Dani discusses her thoughts on a possible Hercules franchise, I share my thoughts on Star Wars things (shocking, I actually know), and more.

What We’re Talking About – Disney and Universal Orlando News and Rumors

The new Disneyland Resort’s Star Wars Trading Post solves a problem created by Imagineering’s commitment to telling such a narrow story in Star Wars story in Galaxy’s Edge. Since Galaxy’s Edge exists in a time period between the events of “The Last Jedi” and “The Rise of Skywalker”, the strict storytelling rules mean that the residents of Batuu are unaware of the outside world, because they’re living it. That also means a lot of Star Wars merchandise can’t be sold in the new land. However, the new Downtown Disney shop won’t have any such restrictions. Learn more about the details of this new shop here.

My take on this whole thing: Truthfully, I think it was a bit of a mistake for Disney to tie Galaxy’s Edge to such a narrow time frame. I wonder, as time goes on, if they will be able to open it up, like they are going to be doing with the Trading Post.

If you are getting married in 2021 or 2022 or you just really want a Disney-inspired wedding gown for the heck of it….there’s a brand new line that’s available for you!

Disney shared their earnings for the past quarter this week and let’s be honest….things are still rough, but not as rough as expected.

Disney+ just keeps growing! The streaming service had 94.9 million customers worldwide as of Jan. 2, 2021. And it’s of course grown since then too, thanks to shows like WandaVision.

Speaking of just growing and growing, I suspect that Disney+ will continue to gain subscribers with the upcoming The Falcon and the Winter Soldier series, which will start airing in March. We saw a preview during the Big Game this past weekend. Thoughts?

Disney is officially shuttering Blue Sky Studios. The former 20th Century Fox animation division created 13 feature films including the Ice Age franchise.

Joe shares his thoughts about the closure of the studio: I can understand why the studio might seem redundant in Disney’s portfolio, but this is the exact thing we worried about when the merger was announced. A small and specialized industry is shrinking even more. Add on top to that they abandoned a project 75% done that had queer leads makes it seem they don’t take that new “Inclusion” key to heart yet.

Could Disney’s next cinematic franchise be about Hercules? The Russo Brothers sure hope so!

Dani states: I’m generally opposed to the live action stuff, but I’m intrigued by the potential of Hercules. There’s so much they can do with Greek mythology.
