We all know that calories don’t count on vacation, but sometimes (even on vacation) you get a craving for something that tastes good and is good for you. Disney’s Animal Kingdom has plenty of indulgent treats and items full of plenty of sugar, fat, and calories, but did you know that there’s also good options for healthier foods? Here’s our picks of where we like to go when we’re looking to take a walk on the healthy side.
Meal: Satu’li Canteen
This one goes without question, as it is one of the best meals for health-conscious individuals at Walt Disney World. Skip the cheeseburger pods, and look at the bowls. You can choose from beef, chicken, shrimp, or tofu, served on beans and rice, red and sweet potato hash, noodles, or salad, and topped with a creamy herb dressing, charred green onion dressing, or black bean vinaigrette. In addition to looking healthy, these bowl meals taste fresh and satisfying.
Snack: Harambe Fruit Market
With a name like Harambe Fruit Market, you can expect there to be some healthy choices. In addition to a wide variety of fruit, you can get things like carrots and celery, pickles, or trail mix. Our absolute favorite is the grilled corn on the cob. Yes, it does have a decent amount of butter, but it feels a bit healthier than a bag of chips or a churro.
Drink: Nomad Lounge
Overall, this lounge provides a top-quality getaway from the hustle and bustle of a day in a theme park. And while the potent potables on the menu are enticing (like the Tempting Tigress and the Annapurna Zing), don’t forget about the non-alcoholic beverages, too. The press pot coffee and passion fruit vanilla iced tea are great options, as are drinks like the Hibiscus Henna: Watermelon, Hibiscus, Lime Juice, Topped with Soda Water. Looking for a less formal setting? Try the assortment of teas at the Royal Anandapur Tea Company in Asia.
Treat: Zuri’s Sweets Shop
It may seem a bit odd to mention Animal Kingdom’s candy shop as the best place for a treat, but this is where you can get the incredible Disney caramel apples. Not health food by any stretch of the imagination, but they are something you can split and you know what they say about an apple a day! There’s also prepackaged healthy snacks like nuts and granola, too.
