We’ve tried lots of St. Patrick’s Day treats in Disney World this week. But, one of them was not like the others.
Today, in Disney’s Animal Kingdom, we’re trying not one, not two, but THREE desserts in celebration of the holiday. And, we learned WAY more about Irish lore than we ever expected. Yes, we’re naturally going to share our review of the dessert trio. But, we’re also about to teach you a lesson in Irish history and pirates. Get ready.
You can often find special, seasonal dessert trios at Nomad Lounge. In the past, we’ve tried a fall-inspired trio and a Christmas-inspired trio. Now, it’s time for St. Paddy’s Day to have its moment. These were really adorable desserts, but one of them raised a lot of questions.
The dessert trio includes an Amarula Rainbow Cake, Whiskey Caramel Cake Pop, and Coffee Panna Cotta. Amarula is a cream liqueur from South Africa and we’ve tried it in other Disney World desserts before, like the delicious Zebra Domes found at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge. The tiny cake itself was citrus with an amarula buttercream.
Now, this is where the questions begin. See that little chocolate piece tucked into the buttercream atop the cake? We had ourselves a field day trying to guess what it was and went down quite an unexpected route. Our first guess was a pirate ship wheel. You can imagine that, right?
Our next guess was a spider web. This is also believable but adds even more confusion because obviously, it’s St. Patrick’s Day, not Halloween. Now, here’s where we get into our history lesson. Going along with the idea that this little chocolate creation is in fact a pirate ship wheel, someone on our team mentioned a certain episode of VeggieTales where St. Patrick himself was actually kidnapped by pirates.
Now, this would certainly be a unique route for a Disney Pastry Chef to take with a dessert. In our research, we did find claims that Saint Patrick was kidnapped by Irish pirates as a teenager. So, we concluded that this Cast Member decided to forego the traditional shamrock sprinkles and went for a MUCH more unique option.
After having settled on this idea that we were eating a chocolate pirate ship wheel, we learned the TRUTH. Are you ready for the big reveal? The chef shared that it’s actually a COMPASS, which is the logo of Nomad Lounge. Consider us flabbergasted.
So, we’re shocked and maybe a little disappointed? We did learn a lot in the process, like the fact that Irish pirates are a thing that existed. Anyways, back to our regularly scheduled programming! The Whiskey Caramel Cake Pop is bright green and topped with Mickey ears! But, dissimilar to typical cake pops, it didn’t come on a stick.
This cake wasn’t overly sweet, and we think it’s because of the whiskey flavors. Plus, the consistency of the cake itself was more like a batter — the way a cake pop should be!
The Coffee Panna Cotta was pretty underwhelming flavor-wise. It was fairly simple and probably not something we’d want to try again. Kids, especially, would probably not be fans of it.
Overall, we’d have to say our favorite of the three was the Amarula Rainbow Cake. We loved its flavors AND the lessons it taught us. This dessert trio is available at Nomad Lounge for $13 from now through March 20th! Check back with us for more Disney food updates!
