NEWS: Facial Recognition Being Tested for Disney World Theme Park Entry

It seems like there’s tons of new Disney technology popping up lately!

Cinderella Castle

Just yesterday, Disney started rolling out their new MagicMobile service on select smart devices — it’s a feature that lets your phone double as your MagicBand! You’ll be able to use it to tap into the parks and more. But now, Disney’s testing yet another way to make park entry easier, and it seems even MORE tech-y: facial recognition!

From March 23rd to April 23rd, Disney World is testing this new feature at Magic Kingdom. You won’t be able to try it at any other park yet! If you want the nitty-gritty of how this facial recognition works, Disney will capture an image of your face, convert it into your own personal number, and associate that number with your park admission. Sounds fancy, right?!

Keep in mind that Magic Kingdom’s just testing facial recognition out, and your participation is entirely optional! When you arrive at the touch points, there will be a separate line for the facial recognition touch zone. Make sure you have a valid theme park ticket and Park Pass reservation and hop into line!

Once it’s your turn, take off any hats, sunglasses, or other accessories — but keep your mask on!

Then, face the camera and let the technology do its thing! You’ll have to tap your ticket or MagicBand to match your park admission to your face.

Next time you’re in Magic Kingdom, you can go back through that technology testing lane. If you’d rather opt out of testing altogether, you can go through any of the other lines and tap your park admission to the scanners as normal! And if your kiddos want to participate, they can do that — you’ll just need to be there with them if they’re under 18.

Aaaand you’re in! Welcome to Magic Kingdom!

Disney’s got a few other details about your privacy you’ll want to keep in mind if you want to participate:

While the testing is due to end April 23rd, Disney has stated that the length is subject to change. We’re heading out to Magic Kingdom to give it a whirl, and we’ll keep you posted with what we discover! Stay tuned to DFB for more Disney news and updates.
