NEWS: Florida Governor Threatens Lawsuit Over CDC Cruise Restrictions

The global health crisis has been particularly hard on the travel industry, and perhaps even more so on cruise lines.

Disney Cruise Line

At the moment, Disney Cruise Line has currently canceled sailings through August, although the company hopes to resume some operations this fall. Disney also recently announced a new staycation cruise experience in the U.K. However, for the time being, cruises leaving the U.S. are currently grounded and the CDC continues to extend no-sail orders.

According to ABC News, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis recently appeared in public with leaders from Carnival, Norwegian, Disney, and Royal Caribbean. There he spoke out against the cruise ban and threatened to file a lawsuit against the CDC if cruises are not allowed to resume by this summer.

Castaway Cay

Florida currently has the three busiest ports in all of the U.S., located in Miami, Port Canaveral, and Port Everglades near Fort Lauderdale. DeSantis said that the CDC ban was hurting the state, particularly because cruising has resumed elsewhere in the world.

Disney Dream

The CDC has not yet commented on DeSantis’ remarks, but it did issue specific guidelines back in October for U.S. cruises. These guidelines include laboratory testing for crews in U.S. waters, simulated voyages to test cruise ship operators’ ability to mitigate COVID-19 risk, certification for ships that meet specific requirements, and a phased return to cruising.

Disney Magic

Royal Caribbean has already made plans to resume sailing in the summer, as early as June. Those cruises will operate at reduced capacity, with vaccine requirements for crew AND guests. as well as with specific face covering requirements. Meanwhile, Disney Cruise has not announced any summer cruise plans but did recently extend its temporary cancellation and payment policies. We’ll continue to monitor the situation, and keep you updated.

Cupcake-Inspired CHOCOLATE is Coming to Disney Springs SOON!

Sprinkles is known for their cupcakes, and we have shared our love for the cupcake ATM at Disney Springs! But, Sprinkles decided they’re not stopping at cupcakes!

How about some cupcakes? No? How about some…

Maybe cupcakes aren’t your favorite dessert. That’s okay! Sprinkles has 4 NEW sweet treats for you to try! You can try 1 or try them all…you just have to wait until they are available (which, luckily, is soon!).

Chocolate lovers rejoice! Sprinkles announced on their Instagram page that they are bringing SPRINKLES CHOCOLATE to their shops! They have decided to take their 4 top cupcake flavors and convert them into smooth ‘Premium Belgian Callebaut’ chocolate bars. They look like the top of the cupcakes at Sprinkles! The chocolate will be available in stores on April 3rd, so you will just have to drool over these photos until then.

© Sprinkles

The Black & White chocolate bar is described as, “perfect harmony in every bite.” The Black & White cupcakes are a Belgian chocolate cake with vanilla frosting. We are interested to see how this flavor combination transfers to a solid chocolate bar!

© Sprinkles

The Dark Chocolate bar is described as, “rich, dark, and delightfully decadent.” A dark chocolate cupcake seems like one of the easier transitions to a chocolate bar.

© Sprinkles

It wouldn’t be Sprinkles chocolate without a sprinkle option, right?! The Sprinkle chocolate bar is a white chocolate bar with rainbow sprinkles inside AND outside. This chocolate bar is fun and colorful!

© Sprinkles

Red Velvet is a CLASSIC! They converted this cupcake flavor into a chocolate bar by layering milk chocolate with white chocolate and promise that there is, “a subtle hint of frosting, just like our popular cupcake.”

© Sprinkles

We can’t wait to get our hands on these Sprinkles Chocolates! The chocolate bars are $8 each or you can purchase the  Assorted-4 Box for $32 and try them all! Pre-order is available online now and you can schedule for an in-store pick-up at Disney Springs for when they release in shops on Saturday, April 3rd!

What’s New at Disney’s Hollywood Studios: A HIDDEN Brownie and A Cart Runs Out of Cocktails 😲

Hello to all our DFB Friends!

Welcome to Hollywood Studios!

We’ve been living it up Hollywood style at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, checking out all the shops, wandering through all the lands, and getting our snack on when we can (and yes, that means sneaking in a carrot cake cookie here and there). So what’s new since the last time we were there? Here’s what we’ve got!

Hollywood Studios Food Updates

Voyage of the Little Mermaid Popcorn Cart

We didn’t expect to find a sweet treat at a popcorn cart, but we discovered the Seaside Brownie at the popcorn cart near Voyage of the Little Mermaid. Say what?

Seaside Brownie

It’s one of those brownies in a cup and has chocolate ganache, cookie sand, and a white chocolate topper.

So gooey!

This totally satisfied our brownie craving, and we got it a most unexpected spot. You can grab one now for $5.

Read Our Full Review of the Seaside Brownie

Toy Story Land Cart

Um…we’re not going to panic. We’re not going to panic. But the Toy Story Land cart is…OUT OF COCKTAILS. Both of its usual on tap cocktails are gone right now.

No cocktails?!?!?!

Fortunately, there are plenty of other places at Hollywood Studios to get a cocktail. But still… .

Here Are The Cocktails You Don’t Want To Miss Out on at EPCOT’s Flower and Garden Festival!

And that’s it! That’s all we’ve got for now! But don’t worry — we’ll be back soon with even more updates!

Here’s Why You’ll Need to Act Fast If You Want To Go To Hollywood Studios In June

5 Fantastic Vintage Disney Ads From Spring 1996 Disney Magazine

I love vintage Disney Magazine ads! If you’re unfamiliar, the magazine ran from from 1965 all the way to 2005. It was THE only way to get breaking Disney theme park news and behind-the-scenes info in the pre-internet era. One of the best things about these magazine are the ads, and what’s great is they were light on any non-Disney ads. That means there were Disney ads that are absolute gems. Today we’ll take a look at 5 of them, all from the Spring 1996 issue.

The featured story in this issue was The Main Street Electrical Parade’s retirement. If you didn’t experience it at the time it’s hard to convey how much of a big deal this was. Every TV newscast and newspaper in the LA and OC area had multiple stories about it, a special party was held at Disneyland to see the final performance, and Disneyland was packed every night with tens of thousands of people trying to see the show for one last time. As you now know, The Main Street Electrical Parade has returned and retired multiple times from Disneyland. But at the time we all had no idea that would happen. Disney made it clear the parade would never return. Anyway, that’s not what this post is about. Let’s get to the ads!

This colorful Disneyland ad not only shows off a lot of what the resort has to offer, but it also serves a heaping helping of 90s RADitude. We’ll just ignore that fact that Mickey’s head looks like it’s turned in the most unnatural and uncomfortable position ever. Also I wanted to point out that there’s no mention of “Disneyland Resort.” That’s because Disneyland didn’t receive that moniker until Disney California Adventure opened in 2001.

Indiana Jones Adventure may have been a year old by the time this issue released, but make no mistake at that point it was still the hottest theme park ride in the world. The marketing blitz for Indy was still going well in to 1996 and the ride was still the most popular ride in the park.

I’ve had friends who worked at Magic Kingdom who have told me EVERY DAY they would get asked about how to buy one of the bricks in front of the park (and around Seven Seas Lagoon). The bricks haven’t been for sale in almost 20 years now, but back in 1996 you could purchase a brick for the low price of $96. That’s $160.96 when adjusted for inflation.

Several of my previous vintage magazine ad posts have featured Magic Kingdom Club ads so I’ll shamelessly take on of my previous descriptions:

The Magic Kingdom Club was a big deal–at least to me as a kid growing up in Southern California in the 80s and 90s. It gave my family discounts at the Disney Store and on tickets and annual passes to Disneyland. More importantly we got a free subscription to Disney News Magazine! I read every issue cover to cover multiple times. It was the only way to get news on international Disney parks and obscure Disney facts before the internet came around. As far as I was concerned, Magic Kingdom Club was a necessity along with toys, video games, and oxygen.

For some reason the human non-animated child stands out to me like a sore thumb in this ad for Pocahontas’ VHS release. Also unsettling is the look on Percy’s (that’s the dog) face. He looks like he is in the middle of having a nervous laugh and would rather be anywhere in the world besides in that raft.

What’s your favorite ad featured in this post? Let me know in the comments below.

Fun Stories Abound In This Year’s “Cartoon Voices” Panel from WonderCon@Home

As part of WonderCon@Home, the traditional panel featuring cartoon voice actors was held, albeit a bit differently this year. The panel, consisting of four voice actors telling stories of the industry also included the usual cold read of a script while doing impressions, signature characters, and original voices.
