As a lifelong Star Wars fan, I enjoy most everything about the genre. I love the movies, I enjoy buying the merchandise, I’ve visited Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge in Walt Disney World, and when Disney introduced Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser as a possibility for 2021, I tried to convince myself this was something that I should look forward to.

Even though I love anything new Disney introduces to its loyal fans, after researching the latest information, I am not looking forward to being a guest at the immersive experience. I am always open-minded and excited about the prospect of experiencing something new Disney offers us, so it’s not standard for me to review something negatively that I haven’t yet experienced. I am aware it’s not fair to judge something that I have not yet tried. So I will say this: with all of the information available to us, I am not feeling that Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser is for me.

Here’s why this type of experience just doesn’t make my list of new experiences to be excited about, and what could convince me to rethink it:

Trapped

I have been feeling trapped, as we all have, for a year. I do not want to be feel locked-in with my family (no offense, core five) anymore. I want to be free and outside, and be able to come and go as I please. The concept of being shuttered in another world makes me feel claustrophobic.

Once we enter, we are locked inside. The experience has been compared many times to a cruise ship voyage; once you get onboard, you are there to stay. And I do not want that feeling this year. I want to feel like I can leave.

The Starcruiser cabins seem small; there are bunk beds, and cabins sleep five, but the pictures show a very cramped space.

Expense

While we do not have final costs for this resort stay, we also cannot reserve a booking yet. Disney does not have an opening date for this two-day stay. I am prepared that this may not be an affordable option, and if it is a splurge, will it be worthwhile? I say no, that it is not worth being holed up for thousands of dollars when I can feel just as immersed in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge.

The Immersive Experience

I am a watcher. I am not one to dress in costume, parading around pretending I am a character from a movie. It isn’t my style. The full immersion of the Starcruiser offers a very involved approach as guests will participate as if they are part of the story. For example, you may be called upon to be a hero during your stay. I don’t think I want to be a hero.

I like to relax on vacation, and not actually think too much. The word “adventure” is in there for a reason, and I’m not sure being an explorer is in my vacation style. I wonder about the social aspect as well. It reminds me of sitting with others on cruise ships during meal time. I am the one who requests to travel with my family alone, and the Galactic Starcruiser experience seems that it will be very social. Not to say I am an unfriendly person, but I don’t want to make new friends on my vacation; it’s not part of my way of vacationing.

Fear Factor

The idea of launching into a new world, and the word “simulation” being used by Disney to describe the journey, conjures up feelings of Mission: SPACE in Epcot and Star Tours in Hollywood Studios. I no longer visit these two attractions because I tend to become motion sick on them. My concern is basically not feeling well in this cruise-like environment that utilizes motion simulation.

So, I ask myself: what it would take to convince me to change my mind? I would probably be enticed if I saw some outdoor areas. I would want to know if I can open a window for fresh air. I am also interested in the health protocols needed to open this adventure.

I would like more information on the special experiences. Perhaps some VIP news will emerge as I’m noticing that there will be adventures into Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. I assume there is a possibility of having the land for myself for a short period of time, and a guaranteed boarding pass to Rise of the Resistance.

It may spark an interest for me if there were cabin options without bunk beds. Ultimately, the pricing will also have a major impact. Also, to be comfortable during the two days that I am there, I need to know that there is an escape hatch. And what am I eating on the Halcyon, anyway?!
