Happy Earth Day!
We’ve been celebrating all month long with plenty of sweet treats, special experiences, and even a few characters! But now, we’re taking a step back to look at what the day is really all about. Disney has been making a conscious effort to help the environment, and today, they’ve given us an update on their progress.
That means we’re talkin’ solar panels. Disney has been using solar energy for quite a while — just ask that solar farm in Disney World that’s shaped like Mickey Mouse! — but they’ve got plans to build even more panels. In Disney World, for example, 2 new solar facilities are in development. When completed in approximately 2 years, they’ll combine with that Mickey Mouse solar farm to power 40% of the Florida parks’ total annual energy consumption!
But Disney’s been busy all around the world. In Disneyland Paris, one of the largest solar canopies is in development — it’ll include 67,500 solar panels atop a guest parking lot. WOW is that a lot of energy! And Tokyo Disney’s solar power completely fuels the Dreamlights Parade, while Hong Kong Disneyland has the largest single solar panel site in Hong Kong.
At Disneyland Resort, 1,400 solar panels sit atop our beloved Radiator Springs Racers, helping to power the park. Looks like Cars Land is really doing its part!
But Disney’s looking to the future, too. Disney Cruise Line is pushing towards solar energy, building a facility of 4,320 panels that will power about 70% of Castaway Cay. And when all of these new projects are complete, all of that energy around the world could power EIGHT of Disney World’s Magic Kingdoms.
All of this work comes as Disney pushes to produce net zero carbon emissions by 2030. Its other hefty goals focus on water and oceans, waste, materials, and sustainable building design!
This is what Earth Day is ALL about! And we sure are happy to see Disney doing its part. Stay tuned to DFB for more Disney news!
