What’s Going on With Facial Recognition in Disney World? Here’s What We’re Seeing

Disney is an innovator when it comes to technology, particularly technology used at its theme parks.

Let’s Get Scanning!

Most recently, the company began rolling out its new MagicMobile service on smart devices that allows guests to use their phones just like they do their MagicBands. And Disney World also began a testing phase of a new facial recognition program that allows guests to use their faces as a contactless way to get scanned into the parks.

This feature is currently being tested at Magic Kingdom and it works like this — Disney captures an image of your face, converts it into a personal identifying number, and then associates that number with your park admission. The thing is… this program was supposed to end tomorrow, April 23rd.

And today, we got a pop-up message on our phone asking us if we wanted to sign up for the program.

We also noticed that the Facial Recognition Testing page on the Disney World website has removed the dates that were once under the paragraph that begins with “Planning to visit Magic Kingdom park soon?” So, are they planning to extend the testing? Looks like it!

We’ve already tested it — you can read all about our experience here. And it looks like that option will be available to Magic Kingdom guests for a little while longer. We’ll be double-checking tomorrow and in the coming days, though, to see if that’s really the case — we’ll let you know what we find out!
