New Details Emerge Regarding California’s Plans to Fully Reopen on June 15th

We’re less than one month away from June 15th, which is the date that the state of California intends to fully reopen its economy, which will end their “Blueprint for a Safer Economy.”

This Blueprint is the name for California’s color-coded tier system that has been used since last year in determining things like capacity restrictions, what kinds of businesses can be open, physical distancing policies, and more. With the Blueprint ending next month, many have wondered what, if any, policies will be in place after June 15th.

The California Department of Public Health released new details on what new policies will be in place on June 15th. While most industries and business sectors can resume normal operations, including no capacity restrictions or physical distancing measurements, there will be certain restrictions to both indoor and outdoor “mega events.”

What exactly is a mega event? According to the state, a mega event involves large indoor gatherings of at least 5,000 attendees, or large outdoor gatherings of at least 10,000 attendees. Examples of a large outdoor mega event include music or food festivals, concerts, marathons, parades, and sporting events.

For indoor mega events, “verification of fully vaccinated status or pre-entry negative test result is required of all attendees” according to the California Department of Public Health. For outdoor mega events, vaccination verification or a negative COVID-19 test is strongly recommended. While theme parks are not included in the state’s list of examples of a “mega event,” it is something we’ll certainly keep our eyes on!

These requirements and recommendations will be in effect starting on June 15th and will continue through October 1st, 2021. By September 1st, the state will determine if updated requirements will be necessary beyond October 1st.
