PHOTOS: Living With the Land Roof Maintenance Completed at EPCOT

living-with-the-land-05-09-0

Five weeks ago, scaffolding was erected throughout Living With the Land at EPCOT. In the middle of April, even more scaffolding was added as maintenance continued on the attraction’s greenhouse roof. Thankfully, the scaffolding is now gone and the attraction is back to its former glory, with sunlight streaming in to the horticulture boat ride. Guests now have an unobstructed view of the various plants grown behind-the-scenes (or behind the seeds) at EPCOT. EPCOT is no stranger to construction right […]

3 Tips to Budget for a Disney World Trip

It’s no secret that a vacation to Disney World can get pretty expensive. But don’t worry, we’re here to help you budget accordingly!

Spaceship Earth

Between all the snacks, souvenirs, park tickets, and hotel prices, you might be feeling a little overwhelmed about your Disney World expenses. It’s true that there’s no way around some of the costs of a Disney trip, but here are some simple tricks to help manage your budget!

1. Buy Disney Gift Cards for In-Park Purchases

Worried about blowing your budget on all of the awesome snacks and souvenirs you spot around the parks (we’ve been there!)? That’s where this tip comes in handy! You can buy Disney gift cards ahead of your vacation to give yourself a set budget for in-park purchases.

Gift Cards

Even if you don’t want to use gift cards for all your purchases, there are plenty of specific scenarios in which using one to cap your spending can be helpful.

Madame Leota Gift Card

For example, we often start our day at EPCOT festivals by loading a gift card with the amount of money we plan to spend eating and drinking around the booths so we don’t get too carried away! Gift cards can also be helpful for giving the kiddos a set spending limit on souvenirs.

Wearable Gift Cards at EPCOT Flower & Garden Festival

And as an added bonus, you might even be able to snag your Disney gift cards at a discount ahead of your trip! If you purchase gift cards with a Target Red Card, you can get them for 5% off. You can also pick up discounted gift cards at Sam’s Club!

Slinky Dog Gift Card

That means this tip can help you both budget your expenses AND save money so you can stretch your Disney dollars farther!

71% of Disney Fans Think This Price Increase is NOT Worth It!

2. Pack Theme Park Essentials With You

There are some items you’re almost guaranteed to need in Disney World. Things like a refillable water bottle, poncho, umbrella, sunscreen, and snacks are a few of our park bag essentials!

Disney Poncho

To help stretch your spending money farther, be sure to bring these items, as well as any other day-to-day must-haves from home.

A Few Theme Park Essentials

You can still buy these things around Disney World in a pinch, but they’ll be MUCH more expensive than purchasing them outside of the Resort!

Disney Ponchos Are Expensive!

By planning ahead and packing these necessities from home, you can free up more of your Disney budget for “fun” purchases like extra snacks or a new pair of Minnie Ears! We recently wore a Disney poncho during a storm — you can read our full review here to see if you think that’s an expense you’d want to add on in Disney World.

Twelve Essentials You NEED in Your Disney World Park Bag!

3. Be Strategic About Your Add-On Purchases

There’s no shortage of add-on options and upgraded experiences to be found in Disney World. But just because something is more expensive doesn’t necessarily mean it will be “better” for your family.

Disney’s Hollywood Studios

For example, if you prefer to take your days a little slower or you’re traveling with people who can only spend a few hours out and about in the parks each day, park hopper tickets might not be useful to you.

Park Hopping Information

On the other hand, if you do plan to spend as much time in the parks as possible, or if you’re traveling with little ones who prefer lots of Disney theming over fancy decor, a Deluxe Resort might not be worth the splurge for your vacation.

The Grand Floridian

And while Cinderella’s Royal Table is a bucket list meal for many Disney fans, it may not be worth the hefty price tag if your traveling party isn’t big on the royal theming.

Cinderella’s Royal Table

When planning your Disney trip, don’t opt for add-ons or high-priced options just because someone else said it was the best of the best. Do your research ahead of time to pick the experiences that your family is likely to enjoy and skip the rest.

13 Disney World Splurges That Aren’t Really Worth It

Trying to budget for a Disney World vacation can feel overwhelming. And it’s true that there are definitely some super pricy, budget-busting options out there! But luckily, there are some simple steps you can take to make managing your expenses much easier. Keep these tips in mind when planning your next trip to help you save some money for the fun purchases on your wishlist!

Were We Completely WRONG About Disney World?

It has certainly been a unique year in Disney World and the whole world in general.

What a Year It’s Been, Right Walt & Mickey?

Last June, while the Disney World parks were closed, we took a look towards the future at what the remainder of the Disney World closure would look like. How long would it take for Disney to return to “normal”? We tried to analyze that the best we could based on the information we had at the time. So, how did we do? What did we get right and where have things been different? We’re breaking it all down for you here!

Temperature Checks and Health Measures

Last year, we took a look at some comments from both Disney’s CEO, Bob Chapek, and Disney’s Executive Chairman, Bob Iger, about the length of time that we could expect health measures to stick around. Now, many measures that were implemented upon reopening are still being enforced.

Such a Beautiful View!

Last year, Chapek and Iger both mentioned that a LOT of health measures would be implemented in the Disney parks when they reopened. That, of course, did end up to be true, as when the parks reopened (and still to this day) there were/are mask mandates, social distancing, increased hygiene measures, and more.

Look for Those Social Distancing Markers!

Iger also noted that temperature checks could even be a permanent feature. Well, they’ve certainly stuck around for a while now. Following updates from the CDC, Disney JUST changed their policy to remove mandatory temperature checks when entering the parks or Disney Springs.

Here’s a Peek at a Temperature Check Area

Moving beyond Iger and Chapek, when the Disney World parks reopened, government and health officials were unclear on whether intensive health measures would be enough to keep people safe when visiting the theme parks. Now, from what we’ve seen, they were at least enough to keep the parks open in Florida. And so far, based on the information that has been shared, no cases of COVID-19 have been definitively traced back to the Orlando theme parks.

Attendance Measures

Last year, we also discussed what attendance would look like for Disney World on the road to normal. Back in April of 2020, Wall Street analysts predicted it could take two years for Disney to return to normal attendance levels.

Have You Visited the Disney World Parks Recently?

That might have sounded a little far-fetched at the time, but a year into the crisis, attendance levels remain at a relatively low cap. The last time Disney shared an update on capacity limits, the Disney World theme parks were sitting at a 35% capacity limit. During the spring break period, the parks hit capacity almost every day, and we’ve seen Park Passes filling up for quite a few days in the upcoming months as we head into summer.

But, we haven’t seen the parks hitting capacity every single day over the past few months — some days have in fact had very low crowds. So, it seems that demand has fluctuated over time and may continue to do so as the situation with the pandemic continues to developDisney’s CEO Bob Chapek has previously indicated, however, that Disney has ample demand for its parks.

We’re Walkin’ Right Down the Middle of Main Street, U.S.A.

The parks are also still requiring the use of the Disney Park Pass theme park reservation system to manage capacity in the parks. What will it take for Disney to increase capacity? Well, according to Chapek, whether Disney will be able to increase capacity is really going to be determined by the rate of vaccinations of the public. More individuals are now eligible for vaccines, so it’s possible that as more people actually become vaccinated, capacity levels will change.

Want to learn more about the Disney Park Pass system? Click here!

A Return to “Normal”

Now, let’s take a look at our past predictions for a “return to normal” in general. Months ago, some health officials noted that things would remain closed until there were systems for aggressive contact tracing and testing in place. This was marginally true for the reopening of Disney World. Testing has become more and more availableeven at Walt Disney World.

And it appears the local health department has been or at least was tracking whether any COVID-19 cases could be definitively traced back to the Orlando theme parks. Thus far, as far as what has been shared, it appears no COVID-19 cases have been specifically traced back as having originated at an Orlando theme park.

Ready to Head to Disney’s Hollywood Studios!

What about a return to “normal”? Previously, some experts noted that “normal” might not happen until there is a vaccine and 95% cure rate for the virus, which they said could take years. That generally appears to have rung true enough so far. We haven’t yet gotten back to pre-pandemic operations, even in the midst of vaccine rollout across the country.

But, more and more people are becoming eligible to receive the vaccines around the U.S. And gradually, more things in the parks appear to be changing. So far, we noticed some distancing restrictions easing up in Disney World shops for a period of time, and now Disney is allowing guests to temporarily remove their masks for outdoor photos. Of course, we already mentioned temperature checks have now been removed as well. So, while things aren’t quite “normal” yet, they do appear to be changing all around the U.S. as the situation with the pandemic develops.

Things Are Constantly Changing at Disney World!

Our predictions last June noted that a NEW kind of normal could arrive depending on health measures and in a way, a new normal has arrived! Some things about the new way we experience Disney World feel more commonplace now. Temperature checks, social distancing, plexiglass dividers, mask requirements, and more are now a general part of your everyday trip to Disney World.

Are we back to “normal”? Well, if you define “normal” as what things were like before the pandemic, then no. But, are many more guests now accustomed to this “new normal”? We’d say that might be true for some guests who have visited Disney World during this time, for whom these new policies and procedures are just like a bag check — just a typical, expected part of the experience.

Hey There Mary Poppins!

Last year, we also noted that it could be a year or more until a vaccine is developed and the parks can feel a little closer to the way they did pre-crisis. And as we reflect almost a year later, it seems this was a fairly solid prediction.

It wasn’t a year or more until the vaccines were developed though — the COVID-19 Pfizer vaccine was approved in December,  and days later the Moderna vaccine was approved for use in the U.S. Later, the Johnson & Johnson vaccine was approved for use as well. So, the Pfizer and Moderna vaccine was actually developed and approved for use just about 6 months after our first predictions — much shorter than a full year.

Don’t Forget to Bring Your Masks to the Park

But, again, things are still not back to the way they were pre-crisis in the parks. Masks are still required and are expected to be required through 2021. Social distancing is still going on, and capacity is still limited.

But, again we have seen some things slowly changing — like allowing masks to be temporarily removed for outdoor photos. Dr. Anthony Fauci has also indicated that COVID-19 guidelines could loosen by the 4th of July, and more adults are becoming eligible for the vaccine. So, here we are, nearly a year after our initial predictions, and things aren’t quite back to “normal” yet — but things are certainly continuing to change.

To learn more about vaccine rollout, click here!

Conclusion

Of course, there are still a lot of unknowns. As we noted in our post last year, “Someday though, it’s possible the only remainder of the health crisis may be a temperature check at the park gate.” We certainly were off a bit there, but we are seeing even more signs of “normalcy” appear such as the announced return of some live entertainment, and greater vaccine eligibility.

Things are Changing at Disney World and Around the World

At the same time, we’re getting used to things that we never thought we would. Masks and constant hand-sanitizing feel more commonplace now. So, “normal” is and will continue to be relative as things continue to change and undergo updates in Disney World.

Top 3 Things We Ate This Week, May 8, 2021

The TouringPlans in-park team gets to try a lot of food. From quick service locations to table service meals and snacks in between, we try so many different foods to help keep information on our site up to date. Sometimes foods and drinks are wonderful. Other times, not as much. But what really rose to the top? Here’s our top 3 foods the in-park team sampled this week.

Dark Side Chocolate Creation, Disney’s Hollywood Studios

A malted milk chocolate mousse dome with raspberry mousse topped with slivered almonds sitting on a chocolate shortbread cookie.

This special treat was around to help celebrate May the 4th (be with you), the ever-popular Star Wars-themed holiday. In our view, you can’t go wrong with raspberry and chocolate flavors, and adding the bit of malt to it just made it even better. Hopefully Disney will bring something with this flavor back for another time!

Empanada de Barbacoa, Choza de Margarita, EPCOT

Empanadas filled with barbacoa beef. Topped with chipotle sauce, crema mexicana, and queso fresco.

These have the feel of one of those Food and Wine Festival treats that you just love to buy every time you walk by, but they’re a permanent offering at Choza de Margarita outside the Mexico Pavilion in EPCOT. They’re crispy and flakey and the filling is simply scrumptious. If this isn’t part of your snacking system at EPCOT, it needs to be!

Amerena Cherry Gelati, Gelateria Toscana, EPCOT

According to Wikipedia, “The Amarena cherry is a small sour dark colored Italian cherry grown in Bologna and Modena, two cities of Italy.” Perhaps it is because this is a sour cherry that the gelati doesn’t taste painfully sweet. It’s the right blend of creamy goodness with a bright flavor, and will be a must-have throughout the summer months.

There you have just three of the things we enjoyed this week. Which would be your favorite? Got anything you’d like us to try for next week? Let us know in the comments.

PHOTOS: A Classic Character Re-emerged in Disney World With a Makeover!

The Disney World parks are getting spruced up ahead of the 50th-anniversary celebration later this year!

Cinderella Castle

Magic Kingdom has been getting a lot of love, with everything from ride refurbishments to new Cinderella Castle decor. And now, a classic character has recently reemerged with a fresh look!

Located in the Storybook Circus section of Fantasyland, the Casey Jr. Splash ‘N’ Soak Station is a water play area themed after the circus train Casey Jr. from DumboAnd recently, the Casey Jr. circus train was surrounded by hedges in preparation for the coming makeover.

Casey Jr. Covered By Hedges

But if you’re a big Dumbo fan don’t worry, Casey Jr. has now been uncovered with a fresh coat of paint!

Hi, Casey Jr.!

While the hedges are still up around the train cars trailing the locomotive, we can once again see Casey Jr.’s happy face.

Casey Jr.

Casey Jr. has received a fresh coat of paint and is looking extra-vibrant thanks to the new makeover.

Casey Jr.

The giraffe car is next in line, and since the hedges are still surrounding the cars, it looks like the touch-ups will be making their way down the rest of the train.
