What’s the Deal With After Hours Events in Disney World?

We have received some BIG Disney news recently!

Cinderella Castle

Disney World will have a ticketed Halloween party is returning this year — but it’ll look a little different! Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party has been canceled, but Disney After Hours BOO BASH will be taking its place and kicking off this August. We couldn’t be more excited for the treats, character encounters, and more. But what does this After Hours event’s return mean for other After Hours events (think Moonlight Magic and Villains After Hours) around the parks? These events were all canceled in 2020, with no word on when they could return.

Now, though, we’re starting to see some signs that these events could return soon! And while Disney World hasn’t announced anything official just yet, we’ve got a glimmer of hope. Here’s why.

The Previous After Hours Events

Prior to the park closures, we saw a number of After Hours events offered all throughout Disney World, including Disney After Hours in Magic Kingdom, Disney After Hours in Disney’s Hollywood Studios, Disney After Hours in Disney’s Animal Kingdom, Moonlight Magic for Disney Vacation Club Members, and Disney Villains After Hours.

Villains After Hours

During these After Hours Events, guests typically got the opportunity to stay in the park for about 3 hours after it was closed to other guests. Only those with tickets to the special event would be able to access the festivities, meaning there were typically some lower crowds at these events since they had fewer guests at them than a full park day.

For most of these events, the event’s cost also included snacks like ice cream novelties, popcorn, and select beverages. There were generally other items available for purchase as well.

Complimentary Drinks

The Villains After Hours event featured a whole bunch of party-exclusive treats, a special stage show, a Villains caravan, special ride overlays, and more.

Click here to see our full guide to the Villains After Hours event!

All of these events have been temporarily suspended over the past several months, and none of them are currently available for booking. But, could they be coming back?

BOO BASH

The biggest sign that After Hours events could be on their way back is BOO BASH! After all, this Halloween party is its very own After Hours event, but with a spooky spin.

BOO BASH ©Disney

The announcement of BOO BASH COULD be a sign that other After Hours events are on their way back. However, it is worth mentioning that this party is not identical to Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party, which it’s replacing this year. While we’ll get to see character encounters, sweet treats, and more at BOO BASH, the event will have shorter hours, and we won’t see entertainment like the Hocus Pocus Villain Spelltacular (the Villain Spelltacular is not included in Disney’s list of entertainment offerings coming to BOO BASH).

Halloween Cavalcade

So yes — while BOO BASH is a GREAT sign that other After Hours events may return, it’s also an indicator that these events may not return in the exact same form we experienced them before. There may need to be some modifications made for them to return. But it’s also important to note that not all after hours events prior to the closures had parades in the first place. Some of them, like the simple After Hours experience for Disney’s Animal Kingdom, merely provided guests with select snacks for free and access to select rides with low waits.

Park Passes Are Booking Up

In order for other After Hours events to return, Disney will likely have to see a demonstrated demand to visit the park. Remember, these After Hours events are separately ticketed events, meaning that you can’t get in with a regular theme park ticket. You need to buy a separate ticket to attend this event, and Disney will want to know that there will be sufficient demand for what they’re offering.

Lately, demand for the parks has been there! Park Pass reservations are booking up SUPER fast — next week, for example, reservations are slim pickings.

Park Pass Reservation availability for guests staying at Select Resort Hotels for May 10th as of May 7th © Disney

But reservations aren’t just getting snatched up for summer. We’ve seen days book up in October and even November this year (although some have later been restocked). That’s likely just the proof of demand that Disney needs to bring these events back. If there are enough guests making Park Pass reservations and filling up existing park demand, then Disney may figure that there are likely enough guests who are willing to pay extra to get into the parks with even lower crowds or special offerings.

But, of course, Disney will also need to weigh out if adding on another After Hours Event will be profitable enough right now. With capacity limits and travel still impacted by the pandemic, these are all things that will be weighing in favor of waiting a bit longer before offering more After Hours Events again.

More Things Are Reopening

Disney World is steadily continuing with its phased reopening, and things are slowly returning to “normal.” In the next few months alone, Disney’s BoardWalk Inn, Disney Beach Club Resort, and several other hotels are reopening; Cape May Café and Tusker House Restaurant will serve guests once more; and Festival of the Lion King in Disney’s Animal Kingdom will resume shows in a modified format.

Festival of the Lion King

That’s a LOT of things returning to the parks! Disney’s ability to reopen hotels, restaurants, and shows proves it’s looking forward. An eventual next step could be to bring those After Hours events back, too. The question is just when?

Health Measures Are Going Away

The parks reopened in July 2020 with a series of health and safety measures in place. As the situation with the COVID-19 pandemic continues to develop, we’ve seen a number of changes made to these policies and procedures.

Health and Safety Signs in Disney World

While a face covering IS still required on property, we’ve seen mask rules changed and other health measures get eliminated. Recently, Disney has approved the removal of masks while taking outdoor photos, announced a phased elimination of temperature checks, and removed hand-washing stations from the parks.

New Mask Policy

Again, the disappearance of these health measures is a sign that the parks are slowly returning to “normal.” And a logical next step might be to reinstate some of the other suspended offerings — like those After Hours events.

Read More About What’s Back to Normal in Disney World!

Early Theme Park Entry

In January, Disney World annoyed that it will be offering Early Theme Park Entry for resort guests this year to celebrate Disney World’s 50th anniversary. Once put into action, this special perk will allow visitors staying at Disney hotels enter the parks half an hour before opening.

Tree of Life

This replacement for Extra Magic Hours hasn’t officially kicked off yet — Disney never announced a start date, so we are still waiting for that announcement. But these early hours could hint that late hours may return soon, too.

Read More About Early Theme Park Entry Here!

But, There Are a Lot of Factors at Play

While there are a number of things that could point to other After Hours events coming back, there are some things that could weigh in favor of NOT bringing back these events just yet.

Disney is already operating at a limited capacity so lines might already somewhat lower than what they would be during normal times. Guests might not feel the need, as much as they used to, to pay an additional fee for a separately ticketed event to experience the park with lower crowds. Now, we have seen large crowds in Disney World on some days, and some of these ticketed events (like Villains After Hours) offer much more than just shorter wait times. But still, Disney will have to evaluate whether they feel there will be enough demand to make these events worth it.

Cursed Caravan

For those events that featured special entertainment (like Villains After Hours), Disney might not be able to bring back some of those offerings due to the situation with the pandemic and concerns surrounding social distancing. Without those special entertainment offerings, some guests might not feel like the events are worth the additional cost. Again, this is something Disney would have to consider before deciding to bring back these ticketed events.

Villains After Hours

Disney’s decision may also hinge, as we sort of discussed above, on how the situation with COVID-19 develops, what Disney feels like it may bring back safely, whether there will be sufficient guest demand, and whether offering these events is more beneficial than say extending park hours or things of that nature.

It’s important to note that Disney has NOT given the official word on when After Hours events could return (other than the BOO BASH, of course). But some of these signs might point toward a potential return for more of these events in the future. We’ll be sure to let ya know as SOON as we hear any updates (and we’ll keep you posted with plenty more Disney news!), so stay tuned to DFB.

Get to Know the Safe in Your Disney World Hotel Room

It’s a near inevitability that a traveler today will be toting a Dumbo-sized lot of expensive equipment. When my kids were teens, my own family of five (two adults and three teens) typically visited Walt Disney World with 5 iPhones, two computers, an iPad, a DSLR camera with several lenses, and two or three pocket digital cameras, plus wallets filled with cash, credit cards, and the like. That’s a lot of expensive stuff to leave in a hotel room. One way many guests deal with this is by storing some of their gear in their hotel room safe.

Pedestal style safe at Bay Lake Towers. One foot rule on top gives a sense of the external dimensions. The inside is smaller.
Pedestal style safe at Bay Lake Towers.

There’s a safe in my hotel room?

Yes, there is a safe in every Walt Disney World hotel room.

Is there a charge for this?

No, it’s included in the cost of your room.

Where will I find the safe?

There is considerable variation in this from resort to resort or even between different room configurations at the same resort. However, the vast majority of Disney World hotel safes will be either in or next to a closet, usually built into the wall. Some safes in deluxe resort rooms or in 1, 2, and 3 bedroom Disney Vacation Club Villas will be on a sturdy post inside the closet.

How do I access the safe?

Safes at Walt Disney World have combination access, with printed instructions on the front of the door. Typically you select your own four-digit code and then use that code to access your belongings.

What happens if I forget the combination?

Speak to the front desk of the hotel and they will assist you.

Art of Animation wall safe. That’s an iPad and iPhone inside. The depth is somewhat misleading because the thickness of the door intrudes upon that space.

Will my hotel housekeeper have access to the safe?

No. While a housekeeper will enter your room to clean, they will not have access to the contents of the safe.

How large are the safes?

There is a substantial variation in this depending on the resort and your room type. Generally, the newer the resort and the larger the room, the larger your safe will be. The smallest safes (found in many value resort rooms) will have an internal area of approximately 7″ x 10″ X 2″. Many moderate resort rooms will have safes that are approximately 14″ x 9″ x 3″. The largest safes will be those in the larger DVC villas, with an internal area of approximately 14″ x 14″ x 6.”

Those small safes sound pretty small. What can I fit in there?

With the small safes, you’re really only going to be able to hold what one TouringPlans reader called “trip killers”: those things that would cause complete and total disaster if lost (the money and paperwork that would let you eat and get home). Even the smallest Disney World safe will hold passports and cash, an iPad, a phone, and possibly a pocket camera, if you balance everything properly. You might be able to fit a small netbook inside, but if you do, then not much else (other than paper like passports) will fit. The larger deluxe/villa safes will fit most laptops and some DSLR cameras.

My attempt to get a 13" MacBook air into a safe at Port Orleans Riverside. The laptop did not fit and instead became quite stuck. I spent several panicky minutes trying to extract it. Do NOT try this yourself.

I have a small safe and a lot of pricey stuff, what do I do?

My first suggestion is to bring less stuff. I’m not being flip, but really if you’re particularly worried about losing something, then your first line of defense is not to bring it. This certainly applies to something like expensive jewelry, which you are unlikely to need at Disney World. I’ve also learned to pare down my wallet when I travel. When I’m home, my wallet contains a zillion store credit cards, grocery cards, membership cards, etc. When I go to Walt Disney World, I carry just my ID, ATM card, health insurance card, and few major credit cards. Everything else stays at home.

Another strategy is to keep your valuables in your possession. You can bring a bag or backpack with you on every ride at Walt Disney World. There are also lockers for guest use at the parks. However, both those options bring with them a host of additional concerns.

But I have something big and valuable that I really want to leave at the hotel.

Every Disney resort has a large safe for the hotel. You can bring your items to the front desk and they will store them in the vault for you. It works much like a safe deposit box at a bank. There is no charge for this.

If you have a suitcase or bag you need stored, the Bell Services desk at the hotel can hold this in a locked area.

Any alternatives?

Many travelers use items like laptop locks, laptop alarms, and locked and slash proof suitcases. You can find many options for products like these on Amazon or specialty retailers like Travelsmith.com.

A while back I had a chat with an Adventures by Disney guide, who visits hotels all over the world, about how she keeps her belongings safe on the road. She told me that she never uses hotel safes and instead keeps her many electronics in a locked suitcase in her room. She has never experienced a theft. Other guests who became part of the conversation added that they usually keep their electronics in a suitcase under some dirty clothes. (The dirty underwear deterrent. :-))

Is that what you do?

I’m lazy and usually forget to stash my gear at the Disney hotels. I have left cameras and laptops out in the open at Disney hotels many dozens of times and never found a thing out of place. Perhaps I’m just a trusting soul, but I feel comfortable just leaving my stuff in my room.

Do you take any precautions?

I do have tracker software installed on my laptop, iPad, and iPhone (Find My Phone via iCloud). If they were to disappear, I could use that to track them. I also make copies of all the cards I take with me (ID, tickets, credit cards, etc.) to make it easier to replace if lost or stolen. When I travel internationally, I make several copies of my family’s passports and keep them in different locations.

I also have name/phone labels on all my cameras. But that’s more because I have a minor habit of leaving them in restaurants at Walt Disney World. They’ve always been returned to me quickly when this has happened. There are many online vendors which sell inexpensive permanent label stickers.

In the past, I have photographed the contents of my suitcase, both clothing and other items. This can facilitate replacement if something goes missing at a hotel or in a situation like an airline losing your luggage.

Pop Century safe holding iPad.
Pop Century safe holding iPad.

Additionally, I’m vigilant to make sure that my room is securely locked when I leave. Some Disney hotel rooms need an extra tug to make sure the lock is fully engaged.

Can you think of anything I should be putting in my safe other than currency or electronics?

The only time I’ve ever had anything go missing from a Disney hotel room was when a housekeeper inadvertently picked up my daughter’s favorite stuffed animal while changing the sheets and sent it to the Grand Floridian laundry. If you’re the parent of a child with a “lovey,” then you’ll understand when I say that I would have rather lost my wallet than this particular plush bunny. An object doesn’t necessarily need to have monetary value to need safekeeping.

I’m afraid of forgetting something if I put it in a safe. Any suggestions?

This could easily happen to anyone. When a have used a safe in a hotel, I typically write myself a big note and put it right in front of the room door so I’ll see it before I leave. Another trick is to leave something in the safe that you can’t leave without, like your car keys or your shoes, so that you force a reminder.

What’s your philosophy on hotel safes? Do you use them at Disney World? At other vacation destinations? Do you have another preferred method of storing your valuables? Let us know in the comments below.

PHOTOS: Monorail Evacuated in Disney World Today

It’s been a busy day at Disney World today! There has been a LOT going on!

Monorail!

We learned a little more about the new Club Cool at EPCOT, we got to attend the soft reopening of the Festival of the Lion King show, AND we were evacuated from Cosmic Ray’s Starlight Cafe. It’s been a day! But now, something seems to be going on with Disney World’s Monorail!

First, when we went to get on the Express Monorail from the Magic Kingdom, we were informed of a service delay. Although guests had started to load onto the Silver Monorail, they were eventually evacuated from the monorail.

Service delay

Then the Green Monorail stopped by to let off passengers, but no one was allowed to board.

No one getting on board

The Silver Monorail then waited to be taken off the line so they could fix the technical issue.

Silver Monorail

Cast Members were urging guests to take the Ferryboat instead…

…which led to a long line of guests waiting for the Ferryboat.

Line for Ferryboat

Eventually, Cast Members were directing all guests to the Ferryboat only.

Now down

We’ll continue to keep an eye on the situation and let you know more!

PHOTOS, VIDEO: Alice in Wonderland Ride Reopens with Few Changes at Disneyland Park

alice-in-wonderland-ride-reopens-6

We’ve been enjoying ourselves at Disneyland following its grand reopening on April 30. Today, we took a spin on the Alice in Wonderland ride to see if anything changed in regards to health and safety measures. When we stopped by the ride, it was essentially walk on, but the queue markers lead out past the Matterhorn towards the castle hub just in case. Like we said, it was a walk-on ride this morning, so the queue was mostly empty. Distancing […]

EVERY Opening (and Reopening!) 2021 Disney World Date

LOTS of changes are coming to Disney World.

Cinderella Castle

2021 is a big year for the parks! Not only is it Disney World’s 50th anniversary, but the property is continuing with its phased reopening since its closure in 2020. That means we’re seeing some things opening for the first time (like the brand-new Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure in EPCOT!), but other things are reopening.

All of those opening and reopening dates can get CONFUSING. Trust us — we get it! So today, we’re breaking down every single confirmed (re)opening date in 2021.

Festival of the Lion King

Mid-May 2021

In January, Disney announced that Festival of the Lion King was returning to Animal Kingdom THIS summer! A few months later, we got a more specific timeframe: the show is reopening in mid-May.

Festival of the Lion King

The show is sporting a new name — “A Celebration of The Festival of the Lion King” — and it’ll take place in a “modified format.” That includes changes to onstage and backstage arrangements, audience seating, and more.

Festival of the Lion King

We’ll be sure to let you know once Disney shares an exact reopening date!

Cape May Cafe

May 18th, 2021

Cape May Cafe at Disney’s Beach Club Resort is reopening on May 18th! This character dining experience has remained closed since the parks’ reopening, but will start serving both breakfast and dinner again on the 18th.

Cape May Cafe Is Reopening!

Do keep in mind that character dining (Minnie’s Beach Bash Character Breakfast and the Seafood-and-More Dinner Buffet) will NOT be available upon reopening.

Minnie at Cape May Cafe

But you’ll still get to enjoy all your favorite New England-style fare! We sure are excited to see this restaurant return. You can book reservations starting May 7th!

Disney’s Beach Club Resort

May 30th, 2021

Just a few weeks later, on May 30th, Disney’s Beach Club Resort is reopening! Although the Disney Vacation Club Villas have been open since summer 2020, this second “reopening” means the whole hotel will be available for booking.

Disney’s Beach Club Resort

Disney’s Beach Club Resort is the first of several DVC hotels to fully reopen this summer!

Read More About the Beach Club’s Reopening!

Disney’s Wilderness Lodge

June 6th, 2021

The next hotel on that list is Disney’s Wilderness Lodge, which will reopen on June 6th! Like at Disney’s Beach Club Resort, the Disney Vacation Club components of this resort (Boulder Ridge Villas and Copper Creek Villas & Cabins) are currently open, but June 6th marks that FULL reopening.

Disney’s Wilderness Lodge

This hotel is a popular choice, so we’re excited to see it welcome more guests back!

Disney’s BoardWalk Inn

July 2nd, 2021

Most recently, Disney announced that Disney’s BoardWalk Inn was reopening on July 2nd!

Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort

Late July 2021

A MAJOR transformation has been underway at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort! Construction is taking place at the monorail station, lobby, and main entrance, and the rooms are getting a Moana-inspired retheme.

Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort

But all that work is due to end this summer! The non-DVC rooms are scheduled to reopen in late July, with their new Moana look. You can book your reservations now for stays beginning July 19th!

Tusker House Restaurant

Summer 2021

While character dining is not immediately returning to a reopened Cape May Cafe, it is coming back to Tusker House Restaurant! This Animal Kingdom spot is reopening sometime this summer — though Disney hasn’t announced an exact date yet.

Tusker House

We’ll see a modified character experience similar to the reopened breakfast at Hollywood & Vine, and the food will be served family-style like at Chef Mickey’s. And of course, you’ll get to say hi to all your favorite pals!

We can’t wait to see you here again, Donald!

We’ll keep you posted once Disney announces an official reopening date.

6 Disney World Restaurants See BIG Menu Updates!

Hello, DFB Friends! We’ve been busy eating our way around Mother’s Day snacks and summer treats at Disney World!

Mother’s Day Cupcake

We’ve had SO many cupcakes (like LOADS of cupcakes), a boozy strawberry lemonade, a new cronut, and more! But we haven’t forgotten to keep checking the menus at Disney World restaurants so we can keep you updated on menu changes, price increases (and sometimes decreases) and more! So let’s get on with what’s changed this week!

Disney’s Hollywood Studios

Fairfax Fare

Fairfax Fare is still closed at Hollywood Studios, but it’s seem some menu updates, which COULD suggest it’s reopening soon — although no reopening date has yet been announced! Although this food spot was previously known for Tex-Mex and Southwest flavors, its menu got a complete overhaul and the entrees are now just hotdogs.

There are 4 hot dogs on the menu — the California BLTA Dog ($11.49), the Pretzel Dog ($11.49), the Truffle Bacon Macaroni & Cheese Hot Dog ($11.49), or the All-Beef Quarter-pounder Hot Dog ($9.49)! Also new to the menu is the plant-based Chicago-style “Hot Dog” Salad.

Fairfax Fare is still closed

The Tres Leches Verrine is no longer on the dessert menu. Intead, two new additions have arrived. The first is the Strawberry Shortcake Verrine made of Vanilla Cake with Fresh Strawberries, Whipped Cream, Strawberry Crisp Pearls, and Dehydrated Strawberries for $5.99. The other dessert is the Snacking Sandwich Cookie which is made of Fluffy Vanilla Marshmallow sandwiched between Pretzel and Potato Chip Shortbread Cookies covered in Dark Chocolate and Sea Salt for $4.99.

Tres Leches Verrine is no longer available

Both of the sides on the menu are new, too! There are now Parmesan Chips for $4.49 and Pickled Vegetables for $3.99. In addition, new beers have been added to the menu, including 3 Daughters Beach Blonde Ale ($10), Bold City Duke’s Cold Nose Brown Ale ($10), Kona Big Wave Golden Ale ($10), Tampa Bay Reef Donkey APA ($10), and Bud Light Lager ($8), all served as 20 ounces.

No more rice bowls

Two new cocktails have arrived, too! There is the Red Stag Black Cherry Bourbon Lemonade (which we’ve seen in EPCOT) with Jim Bean Red Stag Black Cherry Bourbon mixed with Minute Maid Lemonade for $13, and the Spiked Punch which features Captain Morgan Original Spiced Rum is back on the menu for $11.

Calling All Boba Lovers! There Are 3 NEW Flavors to Try in Disney Springs!

With spring in full bloom and Pride-themed rainbows brightening up merchandise shelves, things are getting COLORFUL around Disney World!

Pretty!

This is true of the drinks, too! As evidenced by a trio of bright and beautiful new boba teas in Disney Springs!

Boba has become kind of a thing at Disney World these past couple years. Heck, now you even WEAR boba as an accessory! It goes without question, though, that YeSake is the KING of boba in Disney Springs!

YeSake

We like the kiosk on the west side of Disney Springs for all its whimsical innovations (looking at you, PIZZA BUNS), but some of our favorite treats here are the boba teas.

Fuji Caramel Apple Sake Slushie

YeSake is constantly whipping up new flavors! We’ve had Valentine’s Day boba, we’ve had lemonade boba, we’ve even had peppermint boba, and now there’s not one, but THREE new bobas to try!

Violet Sake Slushie

According to @yesakeorl on Instagram, the trio of new flavors are taro, strawberry, and hokkaido milk, and they’re as pretty as a rainbow!

@yesakeorl on Instagram

Per their Instagram hashtags, they’re apparently going BIG for Asian American Heritage Month, basically tripling the amount of boba drinks on their menu, and we can’t wait to celebrate with all three. Stay tuned for more Disney food news!

harmonious-barge-fountain-test-2004823

The water fountain testing for EPCOT’s upcoming show “Harmonious” has been ongoing. Thanks to Twitter user @allthingsdisne5, we now have footage of many fountains synchronously testing at the center barge. The fountains will be an important part of the nighttime show, but they will also run in a more limited capacity during the daytime. Twitter user @soshields captured this view of the fountains from the side. Watch the fountain testing in action: “Harmonious” replaces the temporary “EPCOT Forever” and the […]
