REVIEW: First Look at the Gelateria Toscana Menu in EPCOT

There’s a brand-new gelato cart coming to EPCOT’s Italy Pavilion!

Just another beautiful day in Disney!

Gelateria Toscana has officially opened, and we could NOT be more excited. We’ve been following the construction since the very beginning, and we’re finally trying the new spot out!

Atmosphere

So let’s kick things off!

It’s opening!!

This new little stand is located on the right side of the Italy Pavilion, just out of the way enough to not interrupt the flow of traffic down the main walkway.

Let’s get some gelato!

There’s a queue space in front of the building, complete with physical distancing markers on the ground.

It wraps around the side of the building.

It’s a small little kiosk with two walk-up windows for ordering and pick-up. On either side of the windows, you’ll find menu placards to check out.

Menu

We already got a peek at the menu before the opening, but now we’re ready to order all the snacks and beverages we were looking forward to. There are SO many items to choose from!

So many things to choose from!

We’ve got gelato, zeppole, cannolis, tiramisù, and more all up for grabs.

This may take a minute…

Also, there’s a selection of beverages, including beer, wine, soft drinks, and coffee.

Eats and Drinks

Of course, we’re here to EAT, so we wasted no time diving right in!

We wanna try it ALL!

Let’s kick things off with the beverages — first the Bellini! This is made with peach puree and Prosecco sparkling wine, and you’ll find it on the menu for $11. We really loved the fact that this wasn’t overly sweet, thanks to the peach flavor being more light. You can still taste the Prosecco fairly well, and it was nice and dry. Overall, a pretty great way to start out!

We’re off to a great start!

Then there was the Italian Margarita for $14. It’s made with frozen limoncello, tequila, and margarita. This was the perfect refresher for a hot day like today, and definitely a highlight for us. It’s tart and not overly sweet — our only wish is that the lemon was a little more prominent. (Although the reporter who tried it is a HUGE fan of lemon, so take that as you will!)

Tangy, refreshing, exactly what we need on a hot day in Florida.

And of course, we couldn’t stop by this stand without trying out a coffee creation! Say hello to the “Affogato” Espresso Gelato, made with fresh Italian espresso poured over vanilla gelato and served with amaretto cookies. This treat is a whopping $11.75, and well, it definitely wasn’t the biggest thing we tried today.

It’s so small!

It’s really a shame that it’s so tiny, too, because otherwise, we’d be ordering this ALL. THE. TIME. It’s absolutely delicious (coffee and gelato, what could be bad about that?!), but in our opinion, it’s not worth the price tag. Change up that portion size and we’d order it again.

You don’t get very much for the price!

And last in the realm of “beverages,” we ordered the Monella! It’s a float made with Coca-Cola and vanilla gelato for $9, and it tasted just like, well…a Coke float. It was great and refreshing on a hot day, but it was a tad overpriced and we would’ve liked the cup to be filled with a little more soda. If you want a float, it’ll do the trick, but note that you can get Coke floats in other places around Disney World for cheaper.

It’s a Coke float…that’s all.

We also got to taste the Coppa Amicisia, made with cookies & cream, strawberry, and vanilla gelato, plus whipped cream on top. Like the espresso, it’s $11.75, but it’s definitely a lot more bang for your buck! It held up surprisingly well in the heat and we got quite a bit of gelato inside that big cup. It’s rich, but not so overly creamy that it’s too filling — just right for our tastes.

This thing is BIG.

But, this new spot isn’t just home to drinks and gelato — they’ve also got some other dessert goodies that we couldn’t wait to try. First up is the Mocha Tiramisu for $8. It’s made with mascarpone cream, espresso coffee, Savoiardi biscuits, and chocolate.

We can’t say ‘no’ to a good tiramisu!

This thing is bigger than it looks, so we think it’s definitely one that you’ll want to split with another person. (Unless you’re very hungry!) The coffee flavor is suuuper prominent in this, but unfortunately, the biscuits were pretty soggy. We really liked the taste but we were thrown off a bit by that soggy biscuit texture. All in all, it’s pretty good for a quick service tiramisu!

Digging in!

Another big hit for us was the Zeppolericotta cheese fritters for $13. We thought they would be the perfect pairing for some coffee, and they were just the right amount of doughy. That ricotta flavor was right on point…so much so that we’re thinking about how much we would love to have these for breakfast.

Want some fried dough? These will hit the spot!

And last but not least is the thing our reporter was shockingly impressed with…the cannoli! This Cannoli al Cioccolato is $6.95 and made with a crisp pastry filled with sweet ricotta, chocolate, and candied orange. Honestly, our mouths are watering just reading the description.

Say YES to the cannoli. Just trust us.

The shell was one of the best cannoli shells we’ve ever had at Disney World and the orange was a lovely hint right at the end of the other flavors. The chocolate isn’t overwhelming — it’s really the ricotta that stands out here. And let us tell you, we didn’t mind that one bit! We’d definitely pick this one up again!

Overall Impression

So what did we think of Gelateria Toscana overall? Well, for starters, let’s state the obvious…it’s a little on the pricey side, even for Disney.

It’s not the cheapest spot in Disney World!

While we were testing out our treats, we heard several guests talk about how their bills were more than they expected. But, if you know that fact going in, then maybe it won’t seem like so much of a blow. Also, we found that the value varied depending on what we ordered. The Amicisia was definitely more “worth it” than the Espresso Gelato.

Guests waiting to pick up their treats.

We didn’t truly DISLIKE anything we had. Some things impressed us more than others, but that’s usually how these things go. We’ve got our list of favorites to order again, so we’re hoping that we’ll be very satisfied customers on our next trip.

Would you try it out?

All in all, it’s a great place to stop for a refreshing treat in World Showcase, and we’re definitely glad that it’s open in time for summer. From what we were told, this place will be open daily starting at 12:30PM, so make sure to stop on by!

We’ll keep ya posted with plenty more Disney news, so stay tuned to DFB!

REVIEW: Does Marshmallow Cream Save This Disney World Cupcake?

It’s a very special time of the year because we get to celebrate all the awesome moms out there during Mother’s Day!

We threw this one to the fishies…

While we’re trying out all the Mother’s Day treats like a cupcake with solid fashion advice, a cupcake having a bad day, and a cupcake with an identity crisis, we’re popping over to the resorts for ANOTHER snack (we do the hard work so you don’t have to!).

The Mother’s Day Sweet Blossom Cupcake is just as pretty as it sounds with its white chocolate flower blossoms and sprinkles. The vanilla cupcake is filled with marshmallow crème and topped with strawberry buttercream for a balance of flavors! It’s certainly pretty enough.

Pretty flowers

Like seriously pretty!

Beautiful flowers

But this cupcake, y’all, is a MESS. When we picked it up out of the wrapper, it was basically stuck to it because there was a huge hole in the bottom of the cake and marshmallow cream was just oozing out of it. Nooooooo!

Um….

And that’s a shame because the only thing we really liked with this dessert WAS the marshmallow filling! The cake itself was super dense, almost like a pound cake. The buttercream had a strong artificial strawberry flavor (which we’re not fans of).

Well…

But if you don’t mind artificial flavoring and a dessert that literally oozes marshmallow, you can try it for yourself at the Landscape of Flavors, World Premiere Food Court, and Everything Pop through May 9th for $5.49. Be sure to stay tuned with DFB for a look at all the other Mother’s Day festivities too!

The Most Bizarre Disasters in Disney World

Over the years that we’ve been in the parks, we’ve seen some pretty strange and wild things!

Disney World is full of weird things!

We’ve seen animatronic malfunctions, ride pieces replaced by plants, and tons of other random incidents. However, even these things aren’t the MOST ridiculous occurrences in the parks — today we’re sharing the list of the most bizarre disasters in Disney World!

Lightning Striking Rise of the Resistance

Last fall, lightning struck Galaxy’s Edge at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in a freak accident. A guest caught the strike on video and it was big enough to rival a blast from Darth Sidious himself!

Lightning closed the ride for a whole day!

However, the lightning strike came with consequences — it caused Rise of the Resistance to close down for an entire day. It would have to be something BIG for Disney to shut down their most popular ride, so this was certainly pretty bizarre!

Skyliner Crash Shortly After Opening

Only a few days after the Disney Skyliner officially opened in 2019, two gondolas crashed into each other at the Riviera Resort’s station and caused a massive shutdown of the transportation system. Many guests were stuck suspended in the air for multiple hours!

Imagine being stuck in one of these for several hours!

The stuck gondolas had to be evacuated with the help of the fire department. During the incident, guests were asked to open up the emergency kits (so we got to see what was inside!) and afterward, they were given gift cards and Park Hopper tickets for their troubles. What a crazy night that probably was!

And just a few weeks ago…the Skyliner crashed again.

John Progress Lost a Hand

Speaking of things you don’t see every day, last year there was a MAJOR malfunction on Carousel of Progress. During the final scene of the show, the father character (affectionately known as John) seemed to have an accident in the kitchen, because his hand was missing!

Give this animatronic a hand!

We’ve seen glitches before, but this is like a whole new level of weirdness. Don’t worry, John got the care he needed because he was good as new the next time we saw him!

Disney Ducks Move Into Splash Mountain

Splash Mountain is one of those rides in Disney World that seems to go down more often than others. We’ve seen it closed for a variety of reasons (mostly weather-related), but in 2019 the attraction closed for a day thanks to some ducks!

Probably the strangest reason Splash Mountain has closed!

A family of ducks decided to take up residence on the ride, causing it to be shut down and evacuated for the safety of the birds. The guests removed from the queue were given FastPasses to enjoy another ride and the ducks were safely removed!

Maleficent Caught On Fire During Festival of Fantasy

One of the most iconic floats in Magic Kingdom’s Festival of Fantasy parade is the giant fire-breathing dragon version of Maleficent. This thing is beastly, impressive, and apparently sometimes dangerous!

She took the fire-breathing dragon to the next level.

In 2018, instead of breathing fire like normal, the float CAUGHT fire during the parade one day!

Maleficent Dragon Float ©Orlando Sentinel

It was quite the spectacle and it has been one of Disney World’s most memorable “disasters” to this day.

Merida’s Horse Spooked by a Balloon

One of the more recent incidents in the parks happened during the Royal Princess Processional a few days after the parks reopened. If you’ve seen the cavalcade, you know that Merida leads the way on her trusty steed Angus.

Merida and Angus making their way down Main Street!

During this particular run, a child ran out into the path of the cavalcade. Even though the child was pulled to safety, a balloon that the child was carrying flew out in front of the horse and spooked it, causing it to buck around. Thankfully, Merida was able to jump down to safety quickly and Cast Members were able to calm the animal.

Fire at Disneyland Park

And if you thought Maleficent catching on fire was crazy, then just wait until you hear about the massive fire at Disneyland! The flames were flying up behind (ironically) the Fire Station on Main Street, U.S.A.

Imagine spotting that in the park!

The fire affected a fairly sizable chunk of the park, even causing the power to go out in Adventureland. Cast Members were able to get the emergency lights on and no injuries or damages were reported. While this one didn’t happen at Disney World, we think it’s bizarre enough to make the list!

A Jungle Cruise Boat Sank

On Magic Kingdom’s Jungle Cruise, your skipper often jokes about the crazy antics that you’ll get up to during your trip, but for one group of guests, this turned out to be pretty true. Last year, a boat sank…while passengers were in it!

When your skipper jokes about being your “swimming instructor,” it turns out they weren’t kidding!

As water filled the main seating area, guests were forced to climb up onto the benches and outside edges of the boat. The boat was removed from circulation, and the ride reopened later that day. What a story that would be to tell your friends!

There you go — a list of some of the most strange, weird, bizarre disasters from Walt Disney World! Stay tuned to DFB for more details on all the crazy happenings in the parks, we’ll make sure to keep you updated on all the news!

Disney World Surveying Guests About Masks, Magical Express, and More

Things are constantly changing at Disney World. Recently we’ve seen changes announced for mask rules, temperature checks, and hotel restaurants.

When Was the Last Time You Visited Disney World?

Disney doesn’t make these changes in a vacuum though. They are continuously surveying guests during their trips, after trips, or ahead of upcoming trips. These surveys can sometimes show what specific things Disney may be looking at with extra caution. Recently, one of our readers got a survey where Disney asked about a LOT of health & safety measures, Park Passes, and more.

A huge thank you to Dustin R., one of our readers who received a survey from Disney about their upcoming trip and was kind enough to share it with us! Again, Dustin has an upcoming trip to Disney World in 2022 which is what Disney was inquiring about.

General

At the beginning of the survey, there are some general questions about where the guest permanently resides…

©Disney

…the age of the guest answering the survey…

©Disney

…what industry the person answering the survey works in, and more.

©Disney

The survey then asked about the guest’s upcoming trip, which in Dustin’s case is 2022.

Disney’s Magical Express

The survey asked whether the person responding is aware that Disney’s Magical Express service will not be available as a complimentary service starting January of 2022. As we’ve shared before, Disney’s Magical Express won’t be available beginning in 2022, but guests will have a variety of other transportation options including rideshare, taxis, and even a new service from Mears (the company that currently operates the Magical Express).

Many guests have expressed their discontent at Disney discontinuing the Magical Express, so they may be asking this question to see how many guests are in fact aware of this change.

©Disney

The survey then goes on to ask about the mode of transportation the guest will be taking to get to Florida, and the method they’ll be taking to get to their Disney resort.

©Disney

It also asked about the number of nights they plan to spend in Central Florida.

Again, a new service has been announced by Mears to replace the Magical Express, but pricing on this new service has not yet been announced. We’re on the lookout for any more updates.

Click here to see more about the new transportation service that will replace the Magical Express.

Park Pass

The survey also asks whether guests are aware of the Park Pass reservation system, a system that has been in place since the parks reopened. Considering that Dustin’s trip isn’t until 2022, it is interesting to see Disney asking about Park Passes. Park Passes are currently able to be booked through part of 2023, but Disney has not specified exactly how long Park Passes will actually be sticking around. This could be an indication that Park Pass may be around for a while, or that they’re simply surveying guests to see their knowledge about the system.

©Disney

The survey also asked about whether the guest was able to complete all of the reservations they wanted.

©Disney

We have seen Park Pass availability filling up for some dates and later being restocked. It looks like Disney is trying to look at whether guests are consistently able to get the passes they want.

Click here to see more about Disney World’s Park Pass system.

Health & Safety

When it comes to COVID-19 and safety precautions and some of Disney’s more limited offerings, the survey had a number of questions on the topic.

At one point, it asked whether guests would be returning to the parks as soon as they reopen (the Disney World theme parks are currently open) regardless of whether new health & safety measures have been implemented, only with health & safety measures in place, only after the COVID-19 vaccine becomes available, or in other circumstances.

The COVID-19 vaccine is available now and many individuals are eligible, so it appears this may have been an older question in the way it was drafted, but it still shows Disney’s interest in how the pandemic may be affecting guests’ feelings toward future trips.

©Disney

At one point, the survey also asked how committed the guest was to their future trip, and what factors have impacted that level of commitment. Specifically, the survey asked the guest to mark which protocols have influenced the guest’s level of commitment including physical distancing measures, temperature screenings (which will soon be phased out), capacity limits (which may increase soon), face mask requirements, and more.

©Disney

It also asked about some experiences (or the lack thereof) that might have impacted their commitment level, including character meet-and-greets being unavailable, limited character dining experiences, the fact that FastPass+ is still unavailable, parades and fireworks being currently suspended, and Extra Magic Hours being suspended.

©Disney

It seems Disney is very much aware that the suspension of many of these experiences could in fact impact guests’ decisions to visit the parks. Disney is working on bringing back some experiences. Character dining for dinner will soon be available at Chef Mickey’s and Festival of the Lion King will be returning soon.

Click here to see our thoughts on whether Disney will reintroduce FastPass+

Disney also asked some questions about other factors that might have impacted the guest’s commitment level to their future vacation. Among these factors were things like the availability of a COVID-19 vaccine, the pace of COVID-19 infections in Central Florida, a fear of getting ill while on vacation, and more.

©Disney

In terms of the 2022 trip, the survey also asked the guest why they chose to book a trip in 2022. Some of the possible factors that influenced this decision listed by Disney for guests to select included that the guest is “anticipating that some Walt Disney World resort experiences will resume normal operations”

©Disney

the 50th Anniversary celebrations, the impact of vaccines or concerns about health/safety risks, and more.

©Disney

Interestingly, the survey also asked the guest to note if, after hearing about all of Disney World’s protocols throughout the survey, they feel like their level of commitment to their future trip has changed.

©Disney

It seems Disney is really trying to get a sense for what is impacting guests’ decisions to travel during a certain time, and whether any of Disney’s health/safety protocols have impacted guests’ decision to visit the parks.

Things are continuously changing in Disney World, and we’ve seen that recently with the announcement that temperature checks will be phased out. But Disney still has many other health/safety protocols in place. No COVID-19 cases have been traced back to Disney and Disney presumably wants to keep it that way. So, it will be interesting to see how Disney’s policies continue to evolve.

We’ll be on the lookout for any updates and let you know what we find.
