One BIG Sign That Disney World is Getting Closer to ‘Normal’

Disney World has certainly been pretty different over the past year.

Cinderella Castle

Still, there have been some signs that normalcy is returning including the announcement of returning entertainment, the removal of temperature checks at the parks, heavily-eased mask rules, and more. There’s also been a BIG behind-the-scenes sign that ‘normal’ is coming back — and it has to do with Disney World permits.

Permitting Prior to the Park Closure

If you’ve visited Disney World recently, you’ve probably noticed that it’s under a LOT of construction. Like, a lot, a lot. Well, with construction comes building permits. For most projects Disney undergoes, be them minor electrical maintenance or whole ride refurbishments, Disney has to file permits with the county. These permits give us a publicly visible look into their plans — often before they make an official announcement!

Star Wars Hotel

Prior to the 2020 park closures, permits were a SUPER regular thing! The last full-length month prior to the closure was January and in that month alone we saw 141 permits filed. Whew!

Epcot Concept Art ©Disney

It was pretty standard to see regular permits filed for Galactic Starcruiser, the upcoming Star Wars hotel, and the EPCOT transformation. Plus, forms were CONSTANTLY flowing in for maintenance around Disney World like roofing and electrical work.

To learn more about the Star Wars hotel, click here!

Permitting During the Park Closure

But things changed BIG time when the parks closed. Let’s compare the 141 permits from January to the figure for April, the first full month of park closures. Only 49 permits were filed for the entire month. May had just 22 permits filed as a construction halt had been called.

Spaceship Earth

Here’s a chart of permitting over the four-month closure.

2020 Permitting

As you can see, permits took a MAJOR dip, remaining below 100 per month for the entirety of the park closures.

Want to learn more about last year’s construction halt? Click here!

Permitting Post Park Closure

The year that followed featured still lower than average permitting numbers. It wasn’t uncommon for a month to see less than 100 permits. But now, we’re starting to see an uptick in permit filings and we just might be getting back to normal levels!

Peter Pan’s Flight Construction

March 2021 saw over 166 permits filed! Yes! That’s MORE than January of last year. It’s possible that Disney World is playing a bit of catch-up, especially with the 50th Anniversary of the resort coming on October 1st.

Train Station Construction

Here’s a look at the whole of the last year.

2020 Permitting

See? There’s that big dip from February to May and then a sloooooow climb back to normal levels. February and March have both yielded upwards of 150 permits.

50th Anniversary Decorations!

So, what does that mean? It means construction is BACK. Typically Disney World construction can be a bit of a nuisance, but in this instance, it actually indicates a bit of a return to normal. There’s certainly a long way to go to get all parts of Disney World back to “normal,” but this is a BIG sign that we’re really getting there!

Harmonious Construction

So, it looks like one thing in Disney World actually HAS returned to normal — construction! Disney is filing even MORE permits than they were prior to the closures, possibly in anticipation of the 50th.

Please Pardon Our Pixie Dust

And just what will all those new permits hold in store for the Most Magical Place On Earth? Check back and we’ll share them with you as they’re released! To keep up to date on all Disney World permitting, stay tuned to DFB!

PHOTOS: Extended Queue Markers Removed From The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh at Magic Kingdom

winnie-the-pooh-extended-queue-5

Physical distancing markers are gradually being removed from the extended outdoor queues of many Walt Disney World attractions, as distancing overall is reduced. In Magic Kingdom, the extended queue markers for The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh have now been removed. The extended queue ran almost into Tomorrowland, past the Cheshire Cafe. There are still marks on the ground where the stickers once were. Markers begin at the attraction’s official entrance, so even this part of the queue did […]

PHOTOS: Sunset Boulevard Restored to Pre-Pandemic Glory with Extended Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Queue Markers Removed at Hollywood Studios

image-from-ios-1-8847927

Not surprisingly, the trend of removing physical distancing markers continues throughout Walt Disney World as the parks relax their COVID-19 requirements. We noticed that markers are now largely absent from Sunset Boulevard at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Markers for the extended queue at the Tower of Terror were removed when it was rerouted a few weeks back. Some of the sticky remains are harder to see than others. This leads us to wonder how Walt Disney World will handle the aesthetics […]

Monday Merch Meeting: Toy Story, PopSocket, Nightmare Before Christmas, & More!

Howdy, (Distant) Neighbor(s)! I hope the early hours of this week are being kind to you so far. Thanks for joining me in this virtual boardroom of Disney dedication as we run through the newest offerings in Disney merch. There isn’t a whole lot on the agenda for today, but what we do have to show you is pretty cool.

More Rainbow Collection

Disney is keeping my promise that there would be more merch released in this year’s Rainbow Collection. Check out the Star Wars and PIXAR crossovers below, as well as a fun ornament.

Jack Skellington & The Nightmare Before Christmas Homewares & Picnic

Are you looking for something out of the box for Father’s Day this year? Why not set up a picnic with a brand new Cooler Bag, Tote or Glassware set to mark the occasion? It’s a gift and an activity all in one. Fill that cooler up with his favorite picnic foods and celebrate Dad. Gift wrap the glassware and as he unwraps it, get ready to pour his beverage of choice.

Mickey Mouse Tropical Glass Bundle

I’m going to live vicariously through all of you heading into Summer on this one. Pour that Gin & Tonic into your Mickey Mouse Tropical Glass Bundle, $24.99 with a wedge of lime; simply add a poolside deck chair, and that’s my kind of perfection.

Cruella (Making Art) Funko Pop! Vinyl – Live-Action

Funko Pop! collectors, can now pick up the Cruella (Making Art) Funko Pop! Vinyl – Live-Action, $12.99. She’s the perfect evil genius to add to your lineup!

Mickey Mouse and Friends ”My First Visit” Ear Hat for Babies, Kids & Adults – Walt Disney World & Disneyland

What could be cuter than matching “My First Visit” Ear Hats? Nothing. Nothing is the correct answer! Imagine taking your first steps into the Disney Parks for the first time as a family? My heart is swelling just thinking about it. I really need someone to do this and send me a photo.

Loki Ear Headband

My son tells me that all this Loki business is a big deal, and I have learned the hard way not to argue with an 11-year-old boy about Marvel-related information. Adding to the lineup this week is the Loki Ear Headband, $29.99. Missing the previous releases? Check out last week’s meeting here.

Pizza Planet MagicBand 2 – Toy Story

The new Pizza Planet MagicBand 2 – Toy Story, $29.99, is an excellent option for those Toy Story fans that prefer a more subtle reference rather than flashing characters on their wrist. Only the cool people will get it. Okay, so in Dinsey Parks, that might be most people, but you can separate the masses using this theory in the outside world.

Matching Ties for Adults & Kids

If Dad is a tie guy, Disnify (yes, I just made that up) your next special occasion with matching adults and kids ties. A cute way to add a fun accessory that makes you both feel special together. After all, isn’t that what Father’s Day is all about; a celebration of that bond?

Orange Bird & Figment PopGrip by PopSockets – Walt Disney World

Now, I usually wouldn’t include something like this in the Merch Meeting; however, seeing as though some of you die-hard fans love anything Orange Bird and Figment, I thought I would be doing you a disservice by excluding them. The Orange Bird PopGrip by PopSockets – Walt Disney World, $14.99 & Figment Lenticular PopGrip by PopSockets, $14.99, are now available.

The Latest from Disney Springs

There are some really exciting new products available at Disney Springs in Walt Disney World, sadly, you will have to be on the ground to grab these, but you can have a look just for fun anyway. How badly do I want these bangles?

Clearly, this last one would be the perfect merch to sell in my Villains land last week!

That’s all I’ve got, everyone! I’m going to enjoy the last few hours before Sydney plunges into winter; to be honest, I will probably celebrate them by sleeping. Have a great week ahead, and I will see you all bright and early on Wednesday!

Meeting Adjourned!

universal-orlando-photo-report-5-29-21-46-5447921

Welcome to a beautiful holiday weekend at the Universal Orlando Resort. As soon as we arrived at the resort, we found new signage in place for the new health and safety policies. Universal Orlando has updated their policy to state that fully vaccinated guests are no longer required to wear face coverings indoors and while on attractions. Right away, we noticed that a majority of guests were not wearing face coverings indoors. We’ve noticed a lot of guests are leaving […]
