It’s finally the opening day of Avengers Campus, and if you know us here at DFB, we’re ready to test out the FOOD!

We’re headed to the main dining hub of this new land in California Adventure, PYM Test Kitchen. We’ll be chowing down throughout the day here, kicking things off with a BIG breakfast. (Seriously, Ant-Man would be proud of this feast!) Let’s dive right in!

Atmosphere

PYM Test Kitchen is designed to feel like you’re walking straight into a lab-turned-restaurant, and boy, that’s exactly how we felt when we first arrived! Everything about this design just screams “science!” in the best way.

We placed a Mobile Order to pick up our food, and when we went inside, signs directed us where to go.

The order pickup area was very spacious! The physical distancing markers on the floor guided us where to stand while waiting, and there was plenty of room to keep everyone apart from one another.

The theme is carried really well inside the restaurant. Technology was incorporated throughout and the “growing and shrinking” theme was really evident.

(Did you SEE the size of those pretzels hanging from the ceiling?!)

And something that’s really exciting — this restaurant comes with Coca-Cola Freestyle machines, so you have dozens of drink choices available!

Giant ketchup and mustard bottles and oversized soda cans hang from the ceiling as well. Can we just tap into that line and drink our soda straight from there? That would be fun!

And as we mentioned yesterday, these bottles are actually an Easter Egg to DCA’s old Bountiful Valley Farm area and the 2001 stands for when Disney California Adventure opened.

But as much as we love looking around, we’re here to chow down, so let’s talk menu!

Menu

Even though we placed our order through the Disneyland app, there was a digital menu hanging above for us to check out inside the restaurant.

For breakfast, you have several options, like the Calculated Breakfast for $10.99, the Ever-expanding Cinna-Pym Toast for $12.49, the Impossible Quantum Garden Breakfast for $12.49, and the Spoonful of Cereal for $6.99. 

For sides, you can order smoked bacon, turkey bacon, potato bites, or a Cuties mandarin for prices ranging from $1.49 to $3.79. And the kids’ menu includes two choices: the Nano Eggs-periment 101 and the Cinna-Pym Mini Toast, both $7.99

Food

When we tell you we ordered a lot of food, we mean that we ordered a LOT of food. We tried every entree on the menu, plus the dessert option and a special punch to drink. Our spread took up quite a bit of space on the table!

If we’re going to kick off this wild day at Avengers Campus, we’re going to do it the right way — dessert first. The dessert option on the PYM Test Kitchen menu is the Celestial-sized Candy Bar: Choco-Smash CANDY Bar for $7.99. 

We have to admit, it’s a pretty beefy boy (which we’d hope for that price). It’s covered in chocolate on the outside, and the inside reminded us of a Snickers bar, except it had peanut butter and a brownie base. Does that sound like heaven to you? Because it was! We would totally order this one again, in fact, we’re still thinking about it. (Thank goodness we’re coming back for lunch!)

Sticking with the sweet treats, we decided to test out the kids’ entree next, the Cinna-Pym Mini Toast. We really enjoyed the French toast element (more on that in a minute), but we were definitely NOT fans of the turkey bacon. It was cold, which in our opinion, is not the best way to eat bacon. (Turkey or otherwise.)

NOW let’s talk about French toast because this is the adult-size portion, the Ever-expanding Cinna-Pym Toast. It was crispy on the top layer with a soft middle, and that cinnamon flavor really came through. There are colored sugar particles on top (made to be like PYM particles). The blue sugar goes on the adult portion to represent Ant-Man’s growing powers, and the red sugar goes on the kids’ portion to represent shrinking in the Quantum Realm. We’re not going to lie, it’s not visually appeaealing. But it tasted good.

The bacon was cooked perfectly, the right combination of chewy and crispy without any “burnt” flavor. The egg wasn’t anything particularly exciting — that French toast was the real star of the meal!

Next up was the Calculated Breakfast, which is made of eggs two ways with smoked bacon, crispy potato bites, and focaccia toast. The bacon was as good as it was with the French toast (VERY), and both kinds of eggs were pretty standard. The same goes for the potato bites — they’re your basic tater tots. The focaccia toast was pretty delicious, and here’s a tip: it’s the same bread they use to make the paninis at lunch!

While the Spoonful of Cereal is served in a really neat gigantic spoon, in the end, it’s just your basic bowl of raisin bran. The menu describes it as bran flakes and raisins, garnished with yogurt-covered pretzels, served with whole milk and a ripe banana. Unless raisin bran is your favorite food in the whole wide world and it’s what you have for breakfast every day…we’d probably recommend picking something a bit more exciting. And we suggest pouring your milk in slowly, we found that we didn’t need it all.

And for all you plant-based eaters out there, we tested out the Impossible Quantum Garden Breakfast. This one comes with a plant-based folded Omelet with Impossible breakfast sausage, crispy potato bites, and focaccia toast. On this meal, the Impossible sausage was decent, but the eggs left something to be desired. (They’re actually folded plant eggs.) The potatoes were actually our favorite part of this selection — crispy, fresh, delicious.

And the other option on the kids’ menu was the Nano Eggs-periment 101. It’s made with softly arranged eggs and turkey bacon with toast served with a Cuties mandarin and choice of small low-fat milk or small DASANI water. It’s pretty much the same elements of other meals we’d already tried, and altogether it’s a basic breakfast combo. This may be better for your picky kiddos!

To drink, we ordered the Proton PB&J Punch made of Minute Maid Lemonade with peanut butter and strawberry flavors, PB-infused whipped cream, and PB pretzel spheres. This punch was suuuper sweet, almost unbearably so for our taste-tester. You get a really strong jelly flavor at first with a peanut butter aftertaste that also comes through in the whipped cream on top. If you’d like to try it out for yourself, they’re $6.49 each.

And besides food, this restaurant also sells some really interesting (and HUGE) Pingo Doce Soda Can sippers. They’re $22.99, and you can get them filled with Pingo Doce or your Coca-Cola beverage of choice!

So now that we’ve tried the food…what do we think?

Nosh or Not?

You should stop by PYM Test Kitchen for breakfast if…

• Breakfast is the only time that you can get a Mobile Order window here. It’s a new restaurant, so it’s likely going to be popular for a while. If you don’t want to miss it, take the breakfast window!
• You’re heading to Avengers Campus first thing in the morning and you need some fuel.
• You want to try out a new restaurant!

You should pass on PYM Test Kitchen for breakfast if…

• You plan on dining here for lunch or dinner. Those menus are a bit more exciting, so take breakfast somewhere else if you’ll be back later in the day.
• You want something really unusual or different. This is a pretty basic breakfast menu, so if you’re looking for something more exotic, go elsewhere.
• You want to avoid the crowds. This place is likely going to be hard to get into for a while, so go to another spot if you don’t want to have to fight for a Mobile Order window.

Overall

All in all, this was definitely a fun restaurant to check out. We’re high on adrenaline from the grand opening of Avengers Campus and there’s so much to soak in and look at all at once. The theming is super cool, and we’d recommend heading here simply to have the full Avengers Campus experience. The food itself was fine (we’re really looking forward to trying out lunch!), and the highlight of the meal was the French toast. It was kind of dull overall, and we were hoping for more in terms of the shrinking and growing elements. We’ll be back here in the future, hopefully when it’s not so crowded, so stay tuned to DFB for more!
