Disneyland to Change Trash Bins in Effort to Reduce Food Waste

Trash cans are kind of iconic in the Disney Parks. Some guests are obsessed with the themes, others love how close together the trash cans are!

We’ve seen changes in trash cans in Disney World, such as this set of three bins in Disney’s Animal Kingdom, and now Disneyland is taking steps to reduce landfill waste.

The Orange County Register reports that along with Disneyland’s goal to produce zero landfill waste by 2030, they are now testing ways to reuse uneaten food thrown away by guests with a new food waste bin intended for another form of disposal other than a landfill.

Keeping trash out of landfills helps prevent the release of methane gas from food waste.

Lotus Thai, environmental integration manager at Disneyland, told the Orange County Register, “It’s our responsibility to create immersive experiences and happiness for our guests, but to do so in an environmentally sustainable way. We have a responsibility to do and be better for our cast members, our guests, our community, and future generations.”

Guests in Disneyland will be asked to throw away leftover food into the food waste bins, pour liquids into mixed recycling bins, and keep plastics, paper, and cans in recycling bins, while other items that cannot be recycled can be put into trash cans.

The Orange County Register encourages Disneyland guests to correctly sort wastes into the new bins, bring reusable straws and utensils, and avoid paper receipts when possible, as Disneyland works toward their goal of zero landfill waste by 2030.
