Think You’re a Haunted Mansion Expert? Read This.

There are few rides in the Disney parks around the world that are as popular as the classic Haunted Mansion.

Welcome, foolish mortals

This ride has a HUGE cult following, inspiring tons of merchandise items, Halloween costumes, and even its own movie! But, Haunted Mansion is more than just your basic Disney ride — it’s full of hidden secrets that even the biggest fans may not know. Today, we’re sharing some of the best fun facts about this fan-favorite ride!

Haunted Mansion in Disneyland Park is located in New Orleans Square, hence the change in design!

  • It opened in 1969 at Disneyland Park and was an opening day attraction at Magic Kingdom in 1971.
  • Walt Disney himself wanted a “spooky” supernatural-themed attraction at Disneyland, and he and the Imagineers settled on a walk-through wax museum-style attraction. After he died, the project lost its vision and the mansion sat abandoned in New Orleans Square for several years.
  • Two main Imagineers had ideas for the ride: Claude Coats and Marc Davis. Claude wanted it to be actually scary but Marc wanted it to be silly and fun. They compromised, with Claude getting the first half of the ride (all the spooky scenes) and Marc getting the second half (ballroom scenes and graveyard).

A nod to Claude!

  • Next time you ride, make sure to ask the Mansion Maids about the bats on their headpieces! Each Cast Member gave theirs a name, and they may just have a story to go along with it.
  • If you look in the queue, you’ll find many headstones dedicated to the various Imagineers who worked on the attraction. They honor people like Marc Davis, Claude Coats, X Atencio, Leota Toombs, Rolly Crump, Harriet Burns, Fred Jorger, and Yale Gracey.
  • X Atencio wrote the music and the script for the ride (as well as both for Pirates of the Caribbean), and he’d never written music before Pirates. We’ll say he did a pretty great job!

Stop and read the tombstones!

  • If you look up at the top of the building in Magic Kingdom, you’ll spot various chess pieces, but one is missing — the knight. That’s because it’s always night at the Haunted Mansion! (This was a nod from Marc Davis, who loved chess.)
  • The name of the mansion’s owner is Master Gracey. You can find his tombstone outside the ride and his portrait hanging in the first room of the building that you enter before you go into the stretching room.
  • Master Gracey gets his name from Yale Gracey, the chief Imagineer in charge of special effects at Haunted Mansion.
  • You’ll also spot tombstones for Gus, Ezra, and Phineas outside. Those are the names of the three hitchhiking ghosts at the end of the ride!

Say hello to Master Gracey!

  • Right before you head inside, look to your left for the tombstone of Madame Leota. If you watch her long enough, you may notice that she blinks!
  • Leota Toombs was an Imagineer who worked on the attraction as well, and she served as the model for Madame Leota inside the ride.
  • Unfortunately, Leota Toombs didn’t have a very scary voice. So, while her face is in the ride, her voice was replaced with that of Eleanor Audley, aka the voice of Maleficent and Lady Tremaine.
  • However, when you pass by the miniature Leota at the end of the ride and hear her say “Hurry back, hurry back,” that’s actually Leota Toombs.

Madame Leota is so popular that she got her own sipper last Halloween!

  • The Haunted Mansion queue at Magic Kingdom was rethemed to be more interactive back in 2011. The first part of this section of the line includes a “whodunnit” game with 5 different busts. Read the inscriptions on each to find out who killed who!
  • If you look at the bust of Aunt Maude in this section, you’ll notice that she died in a house fire. Wonder why? Glance at the back of her head and you’ll spot some matches stuck into her bun! Women used to light matches, then put them out and stick them in their hair so that the smoke fumes would hide any body odor. It looks like she forgot to take them out before she went to bed!

Read the inscriptions on the plaques to play along!

  • Look for the name on the organ in the queue — it says Ravenscroft. This is a nod to singer Thurl Ravenscroft, who you’ll also spot inside the ride. (More on that in a minute!)
  • Take a look on the ground in the interactive queue area, and you may just spot an engagement ring. Who does it belong to? Constance, the murderous bride from the attic!
  • The stretching room is one of the most iconic parts of the pre-ride experience. In Disneyland, it’s actually an elevator to take guests underneath the train tracks. In Disney World, guests remain stationary while the ceiling raises.

Is this room stretching…or is it just our imaginations?

  • Constance, the scary murderous bride in the attic, has killed all five of her husbands. If you look at her portraits, you’ll notice that each time one dies, she gets a new pearl necklace. By the end, she’s got five sets of pearls!
  • You can also spot Constance in the stretching room — look for the portrait of the old woman sitting on a tombstone. She’s wearing five pearl necklaces!
  • The ballroom scene is created using an effect called Pepper’s Ghost. It makes use of large panels of glass and actual animatronics to create a ghostly look.

©Disney

  • When you encounter the singing busts in the graveyard, many people often mistake one bust for Walt Disney, but it’s actually Thurl Ravenscroft. He’s one of the singers of “Grim Grinning Ghosts” and the voice behind Tony the Tiger.
  • After you leave the ride, make sure to check out the pet cemetery. In the back, there’s a grave dedicated to Mr. Toad, whose ride was removed from Magic Kingdom and replaced with The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh. It’s rumored that his tombstone reads “Here lies Toad, sad, but true. Not nearly as marketable as Winnie the Pooh.”

There are tons of fun details when you exit the ride!

Why the Newest Disney World Resort Trend is PERFECT for Summer

It’s interesting how we can spot trends at Disney World resorts, especially when it comes to new merchandise.

Do You Like Corkcicles?

We were there when Disney started pushing Wishables and nuiMOs. And don’t even get us started on Collectible Keys or the Stitch Crashes Disney collection! Or there’s the Minnie Mouse The Main Attraction collection that came before that. Sometimes it’s just a color trend (remember how nuts we all got over rose gold?).

But there’s a new trend happening around Disney World Resorts and we have to admit that this trend involves something we’ll use every day, especially in the summer! We’re talking about Corkcicles. Yes, we’ve seen them often at Wine Bar George. And we’ve even seen Mickey and Minnie Corkcicles! Oh, boy!

Mickey and Minnie Corkcicles

But now Disney World resorts are jumping on the Corkcicle bandwagon! We first spotted a resort-themed Corkcicle at Disney’s BoardWalk Inn. This one is a Navy Blue canteen with a cute BoardWalk graphic on it.

BoardWalk Corkcicle

But then Corkcicles started turning up at other resorts, like Disney’s Old Key West Resort. This Corkcicle is a white canteen with a lighthouse and the name of the resort on it.

Repping Old Key West

We’ve also seen a Corkcicle at Disney’s Contemporary Resort. This canteen has the Contemporary Resort logo on it. We will note that so far, we’ve only seen the canteen style of Corkcicles at the resorts, but this size makes for a great water bottle in the parks!

Contemporary Corkcicle

We also have a feeling this isn’t the last we’ve seen of Corkcicles at Disney World resorts. They’ve slowly started popping up at resorts and we expect to see them at other deluxe hotels — and possibly even moderate resorts — soon. But we get it — it’s summer and everyone knows the importance of staying hydrated, especially in the Florida heat. These babies keep your cold liquids cold, so they are PERFECT to take to the parks in the summer!

We’re jumping on the Corkcicle Trend

And while we’re at it, we have to mention that Disney also announced an exclusive Corkcicle for the upcoming 2021 Food and Wine Festival. And that makes a lot of sense because this year’s sponsor is Corkcicle! You’ll be able to purchase sparkling beverages in the Shimmering Sips Corkcicle at the Shimmering Sips Global Marketplace and four other Festival locations.

©Disney

It seems like Disney and Corkcicle have a special relationship now — we’re still obsessed with the Star Wars Corkcicles! But we’re most intrigued by all the new resort ones, so we’ll continue to keep an eye out for more. What a fun — and useful — way to represent your current “home away from home!”

PHOTOS: Star Tours Now Seating Every Row at Disney’s Hollywood Studios

star-tours3-2412443

Star Tours is the latest Disney attraction to begin seating guests in every row once again, as more and more safety measures are reduced around the resort. Physical distancing markers are still placed indoors, but we expect these to be removed soon, like other attractions at EPCOT and Magic Kingdom. Plexiglass dividers are also still in place in the queue area right before you enter the ride. However, dividers that were on booster seats between parties have now been removed […]

A NEW Disney Collection Features a SERIOUSLY Underrated Pixar Character

One of the most fun things we love about going to see Pixar movies is seeing the shorts that air before them.

Bao!!!

It’s really incredible how these short movies can get us to feel SO many emotions in so short of a time, but they somehow manage to tug at our heartstrings. And the short Bao, which originally aired before The Incredibles 2, is a particular favorite.

In the short, a woman imagines her son as a special little Bao bun, and that little Bao bun is the cutest thing ever. Like when we saw a Bao mug at Disney World recently, we couldn’t stop smiling. But Bao is about to get its very own bag collection from HARVEYS! This includes a Bao Mini Streamline Tote. It’s got a cute pattern of little Baos all over it.

©HARVEYS

There’s also a Bao Plush Crossbody Bag. And is this the happiest bag we’ve ever seen?

©HARVEYS

Or maybe not…because Bao’s grumpy face is on the other side of the bag!

©HARVEYS

This super sweet collection will land at HARVEYS on June 14th at 8AM PDT. If you’re wanting to get your hands on it, mark your calendars! And if you haven’t seen Bao, be sure to hop on over to Disney+ to check it out! We’ll let you know about other Disney merchandise collections set to arrive soon, too!

Amazing Pictures photographers have returned to the Shrek and Minion meet-and-greet locations in Universal Studios Florida. 8 Disney World Character Videos That Are Guaranteed to Make You Smile

No matter what kind of day we’re having, seeing Disney characters is always a surefire way to make us smile!

Character Cavalcade

Whether we’re spotting them in Disney World or simply watching a video, there’s nothing quite like a character sighting! After seeing some of our favorite recent character videos, we think you’ll agree!

From Princesses to iconic duos like Goofy and Pluto, we are constantly awe-struck and delighted by seeing Disney characters in the parks and resorts! To spread a little joy (and perhaps provide a little chuckle, in some cases), we’ve rounded up eight of our favorite recent Disney character videos to brighten your day!

You good there, Donald?

We LOVE a good Disney Princess cavalcade! It’s the closest thing we have to royalty tbh. While we frequently see them at Magic Kingdom, we loved watching the gals enjoying a leisurely horse-drawn carriage ride through EPCOT. Wonder which restaurant they’re being chauffeured to!

One recent character sighting that BLEW our mind was Mickey Mouse…scuba diving?! In honor of World Oceans Day, the Disney icon took a dip, and was waving at guests on the other side of the glass. Still not sure how this even happened, but we’ll chalk it up to that Disney magic!

Disney characters are clearly REALLY developing an interest in aquatic activities, because not only is Mickey getting into scuba, but Goofy has taken up fishing! We saw him at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, working on his “perfect cast” at Echo Lake!

Chip ’n’ Dale are QUITE the dynamic duo, and we love seeing them pop up all over the parks! We were especially excited recently to see them in their CLASSIC Rescue Rangers ‘fits!

The boat cavalcades at Disney’s Animal Kingdom have been a BIG hit, and it’s a thrill to spot different characters floating down the river. It’s even more thrilling when Launchpad McQuack looks like he’s auditioning for So You Think You Can Dance!

Sometimes you just can’t beat a classic. We’re over here BEAMING at the simple pleasures of watching Tinker Bell ride down Main Street U.S.A., looking like a queen on her treasure throne!

One can NEVER have too much Goofy! Of all the unexpected character pop-ups we’ve seen in Disney World lately, this surprise appearance from Goofy and Pluto at the Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort left us totally star-struck! Wonder if they were stopping by for brunch?!

Last but CERTAINLY not least, we’ve gotta give a special shoutout to plant Snow White and her new friend. Apparently there are now eight dwarves, and one of them is a lizard.

These heartwarming videos are just the tip of the Disney iceberg, and we could honestly go on for DAYS! But we hope these brightened your day and reminded you of the magic of Disney!
