The Not So “Magical” Truth About Disney World’s Star Wars Hotel

Star Wars – Galactic Starcruiser, the Star Wars-themed immersive overnight experience coming to Disney World, promises to be a “resort” unlike anything we’ve experienced before!

This hotel is going to be CRAZY cool…with one catch.

While you may find folks referring to this one-of-a-kind destination as the “Star Wars hotel,” it’s far from your traditional Disney World hotel stay (or any hotel stay, for that matter!). But there’s a pretty big problem guests at this hotel could face once it opens we haven’t been talking about.

What exactly IS Star Wars – Galactic Starcruiser?

Since it was first announced, Star Wars – Galactic Starcruiser has been a highly-anticipated immersive experience unlike anything we’ve seen at Disney World before! This two-night “excursion” in a galaxy far, far away is filled with unique dining, characters, entertainment, and oh yeah…lightsabers.

©Disney

The cabins that guests will sleep in come with picturesque views of not Central Florida, but of outer space, giving you the feeling that you truly ARE “out of this world,” light-years away from Disney World.

©Disney via IAAPA Expo 2020 Presentation

Since it’s a set two-night itinerary (much like what you would experience when you go on a cruise), all of the guests will “arrive” and “depart” at the same time. During your two-night stay, you have a scheduled stop at Batuu, otherwise known as Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge in Disney’s Hollywood Studios (we suppose it’ll be up to you if you want to break the Star Wars illusion and check out Slinky Dog Dash or other parts of the park!). So, you do have a little bit of time in a theme park included in your stay!

Galaxy’s Edge

While aboard the Halcyon (that’s the name of the starcruiser!), guests can dine at the Crown of Corellia Dining Room, take part in lightsaber training, and even operate the ship’s defense system!

But we aren’t just here today to review all of the incredible features and activities coming to the Galactic Starcruiser. We need to talk about one MAJOR detail that isn’t often discussed, and it has to do with what the Halcyon is NOT.

Click here to learn more about what you can expect aboard the Galactic Starcruiser Halcyon

What is Star Wars – Galactic Starcruiser NOT?

When you pause and think about it, the Halcyon is not really a “hotel” at all in the traditional sense, meaning it’s not like ANY of the other hotels you can stay at when you visit Disney World. In fact, as far as you’ll experience aboard…you’re not even IN Disney World. (You’re in space, OBV!)

Launch Pod taking guests to the hotel ©Disney

We aren’t just talking about its unique and immersive experience that sets it apart — with this being a FULL 2-day experience with an itinerary, the Halcyon is not a hotel that you can leave in the morning to hop on a bus and head to Magic Kingdom. For better or for worse, you’re “trapped” aboard the Halcyon during your two-night stay.

Lightsaber Experience Aboard the Halcyon ©Disney

While there will likely be plenty to do to fill your time aboard the Halcyon, it’s VERY important to know that for the two nights you’re on board, this will be your entire Disney World experience.  You will eat, breathe, and sleep Star Wars. If the idea of basically being trapped indoors with zero visibility to the outdoors — or the rest of Disney World — isn’t appealing to you, you might want to steer clear.

Click here to read more about how the Star Wars hotel isn’t REALLY a hotel!

What do you need to keep in mind if you want to stay aboard Star Wars – Galactic Starcruiser?

Star Wars fans of all ages will be curious to see exactly what the Halcyon has in store! If you want to experience really anything beyond the Halcyon when you’re visiting Disney World (which we’re sure you do!), you’ll want to treat this experience like a Disney Cruise Line “land and sea” vacation.

Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser Concept Art ©Disney

Meaning, you’ll want to consider your stay at the Halcyon as a fun add-on, but totally separate from your typical week in Disney World.

Disney World Entrance

This could mean that your vacation budget will look different than it normally does. Disney has not shared what the total cost will be for a stay on the Halcyon, but we’re anticipating major dollar signs for this multi-day experience. This means you could potentially be almost doubling your vacation budget to experience both the Star Wars Hotel AND a “normal” hotel with theme park tickets, dining, and all the other stuff a normal trip entails.

Another Look at the Halcyon

It may be tricky to explain exactly what this hotel experience is like to little kids, so give them a brief rundown before you leave home so they can start to understand that they aren’t going to be staying at a “hotel,” per se. More importantly — they won’t be able to do all the other appealing Disney World stuff. Don’t expect many of those traditional hotel amenities either — this potentially means pools and other standard Disney hotel goodies (Disney hasn’t shared anything if a pool will be included in the hotel).

©Disney

So if you choose to stay here, just keep in mind you’ll be likely shelling out a LOT of dough to be essentially trapped in a windowless building for two days that in no way, shape, or form is supposed to be Disney World. Not as far as the “story” on board, at least. So if you’ve got kiddos begging to see Cinderella Castle or looking to see Mickey, it could be tough to explain to them they simply can’t. Not on that leg of their trip, at least. Yet still, this sounds like a dream for interested guests. We’re intrigued to check it out for sure!

Star Wars – Galactic Starcruiser is set to open sometime in 2022, so we still have until next year to wrap our heads around what this one-of-a-kind overnight experience is going to be like! Be sure to follow along for all of the exciting updates as we cover the latest news from Star Wars – Galactic Starcruiser!

Nine Compromises to Save Money on Your Return to Disney

The face of travel has changed drastically over the last eighteen months, leaving many people without their usual vacation routines. As restrictions ease and we distance ourselves further and further from the eye of the pandemic storm, we need to start looking forward to something better. For many of us here, that will include a return to the magic of Disney parks.

Once upon a time, we knew what we were doing. With seasonal special and predictable events that we could plan for in advance, a trip to Disney could be achieved at certain times of the year on quite a humble budget. Fast-forward to 2021, when it feels like we are constantly being asked for more money on less return, it can be hard to plan from a financial perspective for those Disney Days ahead.

With the upfront costs fairly well detailed before you leave, it is usually the expenses you accumulate while traveling that creep up on you. To ease the pain, I wanted to look at a few ways you can save money while you are away that might make it a little easier to find your way back to the parks on a smaller budget. Let’s check out ten compromises you can make to cut down spending while you travel.

Photo by Valentin GIRARD on Unsplash

Limit yourself to one special drink per day.

In my experience, it is always the drinks that add up to more than you expect. Get comfortable with water and limit everyone in your group to one special drink per day. This might be sodas for the kids or alcoholic beverages for adults; either way, make a rule that you all only indulge in one per 24-hour period. This way, you get to enjoy a little bit of something fancy without going overboard, and the added hydration of upping your water intake will do wonders for your energy and endurance in the hot weather.

Set a souvenir budget, and stick to it.

Those impulse purchases for random bits and pieces you will never use really hit the credit card with a thud. Agree ahead of time on either a budget for collectibles or a certain number of items you can take home with you. Not only will this stop you from getting that ugly surprise when the bill comes in later on, but it will also make you more careful about what you take home, and ultimately, more appreciative of that special something.

Pack correctly and don’t buy apparel.

“It’s okay; we can grab something when we get there.” Have you ever been guilty of these famous last words? Take the time before you leave to think through what you might need and pack accordingly. At almost $70 a pop, even a single Spirit Jersey can set you back in the spending category. Check off those lists, from rain jackets and swimwear to extra socks and hats to save that extra money when you arrive.

Skip dessert at the restaurant and get something on the go instead.

When dining at table-service restaurants, the pricing on the menu is far from the final cost of your experience as a whole. Once you factor in tax and tipping, it is easy for meals to get out of hand. Repeat this a few times during your stay, and that budget can go right out the window. Make a compromise by not missing out on the food experiences you love but limiting them to a manageable level by skipping dessert. It’s all about your mindset; extend the evening festivities by going for a walk after dinner and find yourself a quick-service item to share instead. You will save on the money and the calories while finishing off your day with a calming stroll.

Take some snacks with you during the day.

I can feel the eye-rolls from here. Some might say this sort of thing spoils the magic if you can’t spontaneously luxuriate in the snacks of Disney, but if a few of these tips mean the difference between going to Disney and not, then a few snacks in the backpack is worth it. You might decide ahead of time only to purchase one round of snacks per day and then use those you bring with you outside of that or buy one and share. Most Disney snacks are substantial in size and really don’t need to be consumed solo. If everyone gets a few bites of each snack throughout the day, you will save money and get to try more yummy treats.

Make use of free transportation.

Saving time with Ubers or other paid forms of transportation can be tempting but will burn through your vacation savings before too long. Strike up a conversation and wait the few extra minutes for the bus, boats, or Skyliner and save that cash for another aspect of Disney that you will get more out of.

Photo by Brian McGowan on Unsplash

Limit your park days and enjoy the resorts.

Taking a resort day here or there doesn’t just give you downtime to relax and recover, it also is a great way to save money by limiting your park days and spacing them out. When you pack too many of them in a row, it all starts to feel like a bit of a blur. Spacing them out helps you to really enjoy each one and get the most out of your experience. Spend a day resort hopping within walking distance or exploring Disney Springs, and give yourself more time to enjoy the free ambiance outside of the parks.

Don’t bring home gifts for everyone you know.

I touched on this one a few weeks back in another article about bringing home souvenirs for friends and family being a thing of the past. I know the pressure can be on when it comes to pleasing the expectations of everyone back home, but the truth is, you don’t owe anyone anything. Spend that money enjoying your time away, not taking home unnecessary gifts to remind others of your hard-earned holiday.

Don’t forget your basics.

On a regular vacation, choosing to get your supplies like sunscreen and toothpaste at your destination wouldn’t even make it onto this list. However, when traveling to Disney, it is fairly well known that your resort mini-mart will come at a higher cost. Take your time before you leave and collect your supplies when they are on special in your local area. I know this one sounds boring, but every bit counts, and if you can save $40 or $50 on a week’s worth of basics like toiletries, medications, sunscreen, moisturizer, deodorant, etc., then that is a quick-service lunch you can now afford.

Photo by Piya Nim on Unsplash

I hope that some of those can help to lessen the burden of that post-Disney credit card bill. Keep in mind that all of the little things add up, and many of these are achievable without giving up too much of your Disney fun while you are away. It’s all about compromise.

If you are up to sharing, add your cost-saving compromises below.

In the latest of an ongoing series of changes to address cultural sensitivity at the Jungle Cruise, the faces have been removed from the canoes at the former “Pymgy Welcoming Party” scene. For reference, the photo below shows the canoes with the faces intact. Over at the “Ambush” scene, the second and third sets of attacking natives have been removed.
