PHOTOS: Yeah…Disney’s Contemporary Resort Is Still a Hot Mess

It seems like something is ALWAYS under construction in Disney World.

Construction at the Morocco Pavilion in EPCOT

Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort has been working on its entrance and they are updating their rooms to include a Moana theme. The Harmonious barges in the World Showcase Lagoon regularly seem to have people working on them, the Jungle Cruise has been getting updates for the past few months, and TRON Lightcycle Run is still in progress! A few months ago, construction began on the main guest rooms at Disney’s Contemporary Resort, and today we wanted to show you what the hotel currently looks like.

We’ve seen construction scrims covering the hallways and rooms that look out into the hotel for a while now. It’s not the prettiest sight to see…at all.

An interesting look

And when you take a ride on the Magic Kingdom monorail, you may notice that there are construction scrims on the outside of the building, too!

What’s going on here?

It’s sort of an odd look, it seems only parts of a few floors have scrims on the outside.

Not the prettiest thing to look at!

We imagine we’ll eventually see scrims covering the outside of more rooms as they work through the refurb.

We want to see what’s behind the scrims!

Disney hasn’t said what the room refurbishments consist of or what they will look like when they’re done. But we are hoping for more information soon. A Cast Member told us previously that the Main Tower Guest Rooms would be under construction until September of this year. Obviously, that date could change though, depending on how the work is going.

Contemporary Resort

Keep in mind that there’s limited availability at the resort right now and that it can be pretty noisy due to the construction. So if you’re looking for some peace and quiet at your Disney resort, this is NOT the place! The construction also has a bit of an impact on the dining experience at Chef Mickey’s. We’ll let you know if we see any more updates, so stay tuned to DFB.

The Best Minnie Ears to Match Your Disney World Hotel!

We’re not going to lie — we are OBSESSED with Minnie Ears ’round these parts.

So many ears…

And Disney knows we’re not the only ones — because why else would they release SO MANY? And ears come in so many different varieties that it’s easy to find a pair to represent everything we love about Disney! But did you know you could also match your ears to your Disney World resort?

Surprisingly, there have NOT been resort-specific Minnie Ears (with rare exception)! We’ve put together a list of the Disney World resorts and the Minnie ears we’ve seen released in the past year or so that would be a perfect match for your resort stay!

Disney’s Art of Animation Resort

The whole concept of the Art of Animation Resort is about the artwork that goes into all of Disney’s wonderful animated movies. And that artwork is on display throughout the resort. So we think the Ink & Paint Minnie Ears are the perfect match for a stay here!

Animated!

These ears look like they were made JUST for this resort, right?! Even better? There’s even an Ink and Paint Gift Shop at the Art of Animation. How perfect, right? Represent the creativity of Disney artists with an accessory inspired by their work!

Disney’s Contemporary Resort

The Contemporary Resort is…well…contemporary, so we looked for some ears that had a very cool modern vibe. And we decided that the Studded Rainbow Minnie Ear Headband with the navy ears and rainbow bow just felt very Contemporary.

How cute are these?

Mary Blair DID create the massive mural in the Grand Canyon Concourse (AKA the main lobby!) and she was QUITE the fan of bold, bright pops of color. We think she’d approve! They’re also pretty classy, a lot like the Contemporary, so we think they’re perfect for a stay at this Monorail Resort.

Disney’s Pop Century Resort

Pop Century is the resort with all the fun vintagey pop icons all around it. From Rubik’s cubes to a pool straight out of the 1960s to Play-Doh, just about everyone’s childhood is represented here. When it comes to Disney World, we think “pop” reminds us of balloons, so we think the Balloon Ears are perfect for spending some time here.

Balloon Ears

We also love the color of these ears, because Pop Century is so full of color, too! These ears light up, too! Very POP.

Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort

Coronado Springs has a very Spanish and Latin influence — from the architecture to the food served in the hotel’s restaurants. And so we immediately thought of the awesome Mexico Ears we recently found. Yes, we know Spain and Mexico are an ocean apart, but the vibe of these ears fits perfectly with that of Coronado Springs. Plus, many Spanish conquistadors, like Coronado himself, were seeking out the land that later became New Mexico and parts of the American Southwest that are bordered by Mexico.

Mexico Pavilion Minnie Ears

These colors just make us think of the rich, vibrant hotel!

Disney’s Yacht Club Resort

The whole theme of Disney’s Yacht Club is that of a New England seaside resort with lots of boats bobbing in the water just off the nearby piers. And that’s why we think the Disney Cruise Line Minnie Ears are a perfect fit here because they have that whole nautical theme going for them!

They’re so pretty!

The rose gold ears with the blue bow with the anchors totally screams: “I’m headed to the Yacht Club!”

Disney’s Riviera Resort

Okay, so the Riviera Resort has its own ears, BUT we still like the France Ears we discovered at EPCOT better to represent the Riviera, which is based on the kind of hotel you might find on the French Riviera. And these are just SO stylish! And the ears themselves? They’re macarons!

Macaron Minnie Ears in France

We love the pink and blue colors with the Eiffel Tower in the middle. C’est magnifique!

Disney’s BoardWalk Inn

Walking around Disney’s BoardWalk Inn is so much fun — it’s both campy and classy all at the same time. But we can’t help but think about the newly revamped pool area that has incorporated the old-is-new-again style of Mickey and Minnie into it. And that reminds of us these Minnie Mouse Sequined Headband with Flower!

© Disney

That’s classic Minnie right there, and we love seeing her with that daisy sprouting out of the top of her hat on the new BoardWalk Inn pool.

Disney’s Wilderness Lodge

When we think of the Wilderness Lodge, we think of sweeping vistas of American landscape and deep green forests. That’s why we think the Emerald Minnie Ears would fit in perfectly here — it reminds us of all the greenery at the resort!

Emerald Minnie Ears

These ears also have that hint of classiness that we see at the Wilderness Lodge, too — rustic, yet just a little bit fancy.

Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground

Meanwhile, things are a lot more woodsy and down to earth over at Fort Wilderness. This is where we want to wear our cozy plaid flannel shirts, and that makes us think of the Buffalo Plaid Minnie Ears, which would fit right in here!

Orange and Buffalo Plaid Minnie Ears

All that corduroy and flannel? Doesn’t it make you want to get outside?! These ears have us dreaming of camping and making s’mores over a campfire while telling ghost stories to our friends and family.

See More Photos of the Buffalo Plaid Minnie Ears

Disney’s Saratoga Springs Resort

The entire theme of Saratoga Springs is that of the upstate New York small town and horse racing. The ears we think would be a good match here are the John Coulter Designer Ears which feature images of Mickey and Minnie Mouse in their Victorian finery.

John Coulter Minnie Ears

Seriously, these ears are GORGEOUS. We can just imagine this Mickey and Minnie going to the races together!

Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort and Spa

There’s a reason the word “grand” is in the name of the Grand Floridian — this is one of THE most elegant hotels at Disney World! And so the ears to match this resort have to be SUPER chic and iconic. So we’re going to wear the BaubleBar Blush Minnie Ears here.

Pack those EARS!!

Only ears with bling like this are suitable of the Grand Floridian. The pleated bow is also a nice touch.

Disney’s Beach Club Resort

The Beach Club is ALL about summer, swimming, the pool, and the beach. And well, what says summer fun more than a pool float? So if you’re going to match this Disney World hotel, you’ll need the Pool Float Minnie Ears.

These ears are so much fun!

Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort

When you think of the Caribbean, we bet you think the same thing we do — PIRATES! And well, the best ears to wear here while you’re wandering around pirate coves are the Pirates of the Caribbean Ears. Yo-ho! Yo-ho!

Pirate Minnie Ears

These ears were released as part of the Minnie Mouse Main Attraction Collection in 2020. They’re not available now, but if you snagged a pair last year, you’re in luck!

Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort

Aloha! The Polynesian Village Resort is all about Hawaii and tropical islands like French Polynesia. With its new Moanathemed rooms, we’re going all the way TO Hawaii for our next pair of ears. The Aulani Ears are all about the tropical feel of the Hawaiian islands!

Beach vibes for sure!

And yes, these have a very Moana theme going on, too!

See More Photos of the Aulani Ears

Disney’s Old Key West Resort

When it comes to a stay at Old Key West, it’s all about taking some time to relax, chill, and soak up some tropical sun. So the Tropical Minnie Ears have us thinking about all that and more!

Tropical Ears

And while we’re at it, we might just stop in Olivia’s Cafe and eat a big slice of Key Lime Tart! Refreshing!

See More Photos of the Tropical Ears

Disney’s All-Star Movies Resort

This resort is ALL about the movies and enjoying everything about cinema! And for some reason, we think the Wishes Come True Blue Ears fits the look and feel here. Couldn’t you picture this vibrant blue in the lobby of your favorite cinema?

That color is STUNNING!

Even better? Proceeds from sales of these ears go to the Make-a-Wish Foundation! It’s a win-win!

See More Photos of the Wishes Come True Blue Ears

Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge

Let’s face it — things are WILD (as in wild animals!) at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge, and the best pair of ears to match this hotel is the Leopard Print Minnie Ears. Like how perfect are these? RAWR!

Leopard Print Minnie Ears

We’ll admit it — we’ve worn these to Disney’s Animal Kingdom, too!

See More Photos of the Leopard Print Minnie Ears

Disney’s All-Star Sports Resort

Well, the All-Star Sports hotel is a resort all about sports (pretty clever, eh?), so the only ears that work here are ears about sports. And that’s where the NBA Minnie Ears come in!

Basketball Minnie Ears

Celebrate your love of basketball and sports with these! They’ve even got a little basketball on them. So very…sporty!

See More Photos of the NBA Minnie Ears

Disney’s All-Star Music Resort

This value resort is all about music, so we think the PERFECT ear match is a pair of ears that actually…well…play music! The Mickey Mouse Musical Ear Hat is covered with musical icons, but…

Musical Mickey Ear Hat

…it also plays the Mickey Mouse March song! PERFECTION!

See More Photos of the Mickey Mouse Musical Ear Hat

Disney’s Port Orleans Resort

The Port Orleans and Port Orleans Riverside Resorts are all about the Big Easy, New Orleans, and the slow-paced Mississippi Delta. And you know what we think if when we think about New Orleans? Mardi Gras. And yes, there are Mardi Gras Minnie Ears.

Mardi Gras Minnie Ears

They’ve got the classic Mardi Gras colors and a beautiful beaded headband. The Port Orleans Resorts are typically one of the few spots we’ve ever seen these ears at Disney World too! Let the good times roll!

See More Photos of the Mardi Gras Ears

Galactic Starcruiser

Although it doesn’t open until 2022, you’ll need some ears for Disney World’s Star Wars hotel, the Galactic Starcruiser. And there are plenty to choose from, but we really dig the Darth Vader Ears that tells everyone that you’re staying in a hotel in a galaxy far, far away.

These are the ears you’re looking for.

Embrace the Dark Side — it’s quite fashionable!

See More Photos of the Darth Vader Ears

So there you have it — ideas for ears that you can wear for your next Disney World resort stay to match your hotel! Some of these ears are no longer available, but if you happen to have them in your stash, you’re all set!

The Advantages of Visiting Disney Now

When planning our family Walt Disney World vacation, I was skeptical on if we should wait until all the experiences were back – fireworks, parades, more dining locations, FastPass+, etc. I even had people asking why we would pay full price when the full experience isn’t there. Luckily, I didn’t listen.

We decided to take our kids to Magic Kingdom for a day during our extended family trip to Florida because they needed a break after the crazy school year they had with masks and COVID tests. It turned out to be just the trip we needed.

I was worried about having to wait in lines all day and not having a strategy of what ride to do when, but it turned out to be so much less stressful without FastPasses. We were able to get on many rides without a long wait, but the best was being able to just go to whatever ride we were all feeling next without the agenda. While the parade and fireworks were surely missed, not stopping rides early to stake out a good spot for each allowed us to get more rides in that we might have otherwise skipped.

Speaking of parades, the character cavalcades were a great option to substitute. My daughter was so excited to see all of her favorite princesses on one float. It was always a nice surprise to see the different character cavalcades go around as we relaxed in the hub grass to avoid some mid-day lines. I should note though, we were planning to have the younger two nap while we watch for the cavalcades, but the excess noise and music made us throw that plan out the window. If you have little ones who still nap, the back of the Storybook Circus area that’s not currently in use is the best quiet spot for a stroller nap at this time.

As I mentioned, this trip was our first with extended family – my parents, sister, and brother-in-law came as well. This turned out to be a great time to go with a larger group. We didn’t have to worry about getting FastPasses or reservations for a group of nine but still were able to get on rides without long waits. While the reduced dining options were disappointing, we were able to easily agree on where to eat and mobile order ahead of time. We didn’t have to stick to a plan and were able to get in what everyone wanted to do.

As luck would have it, the indoor facemask restrictions were lifted a week after we left, and now fireworks are coming back next month. Was I disappointed that these changes were made after our trip? Sure, but I don’t regret our timing. We enjoyed the smaller crowds with limited capacity and had great weather going early in the summer.

We will plan another Disney trip with our kids to experience what we didn’t this trip eventually, but there’s things that I hope stay the same, like the relaxing nature of the trip. Overall, this was a magical trip at a time when we all needed the magic most of all.
