One of the things that I’ve noticed about Walt Disney World fans is that some of us, on our visits to the Magic, also schedule a field trip to Celebration, Florida just to look around and soak in a bit of the town that Disney built. Just in case you’d like to take a field trip to Celebration, but would rather it be of the virtual variety, I thought that I’d show you around town just a bit and point out just a few things that you and I, as Disney fans, might really enjoy about living in the town of Celebration.
Celebration is oh-so close to the Magic.
The number one perk for Walt Disney World fans about living in Celebration? Its proximity to the Magic. I can be from my driveway to the parking plaza at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in just over 10 minutes. That’s pretty spectacular. And it’s just a bit further to Disney Springs to catch a movie or do a little shopping. Living in Celebration absolutely has its perks when Disney World is at your doorstep. World Drive – the main road that leads through Walt Disney World property – dead ends at Celebration Boulevard. It’s a straight shot to Walt Disney World from Celebration, and for a Disney fan, that’s a lovely thing.
When you live in Celebration, you can frequently avoid I-4.
Before we moved to Florida, we were told that traffic in Central Florida is rough. Being from the D.C. metro area, the thought of traffic didn’t scare us. Nothing could be worse than the Beltway. While I still stand by that, I must say that traveling I-4 west of the theme parks can be likened to a root canal. It’s often slow, painful, and takes much longer than you’d ever want it to. When you live in Celebration, you get to travel over or around the logjams that begin forming in the early afternoons on both Rt 192 and I-4. Instead of it taking a small eternity to get home, you’ll be home in minutes. It’s a lovely, sanity-saving thing.
You’ll find theming in Celebration like you see in the Disney World parks.
While Celebration is no longer managed by Disney (the company’s management of the town ended years ago), much of the foundation that they laid remains. New development throughout the town continues to adhere to some of the stipulations laid down years prior, and believe it or not, you can see similarities between the theme parks and Celebration throughout the town.
You’ll find theming akin to what you see in the parks throughout Celebration. Even new construction has a very Art Deco feel to it, and depending on where you are in town, you might be tempted to think you’re in the middle of Hollywood Studios. Everything is done with great intention, and building exteriors and store fronts, including those you may see in downtown Celebration along Market Street, have been intentionally crafted with cohesive theming in mind.
Contrary to popular belief, Celebration isn’t all big, fancy houses.
I mean, if you’re in the market for a big, fancy house, there are plenty to choose from. That being said, Celebration is filled with dwellings of all shapes and sizes, including everything from apartments to townhomes to single-family homes with adjoining garage apartments. There’s something for everyone in Celebration. No matter what you’re looking for, from simple to grand, Celebration has it.
Celebration is a town that has all that you need.
As Walt Disney World fans, we know that the EPCOT that actually came to fruition isn’t the EPCOT of which Walt dreamt. While Celebration isn’t exactly what he had in mind either, it is a great way to see what a planned community à la Disney looks and feels like.
There’s quaint shopping along the town’s center, complete with locally-owned bakeries and restaurants, and, of course, a Starbucks. You can stop and visit with a friend in the rocking chairs along the town’s waterfront. There’s a Publix, schools for all ages, places of worship, a public library, banking, a Michael Graves-designed post office, and even a family-owned hardware store.
There’s skating in the winter, as well as events throughout the year for Celebration residents. While it’s not a prototype community of tomorrow, if you’re looking for a small town feel (something that can be somewhat elusive in Central Florida), Celebration has it.
I could go on and on about the little Disney touches and details that I, as a Walt Disney World fan, find throughout the town of Celebration. And the joy that I find in living right down the road from the Magic? Just endless.
