NEWS: 2021 Airport Security Screenings Pass 2019 Levels

Whether you’re headed to Disney World or elsewhere, there have been some challenges when it comes to travel recently.

Orlando International Airport Spring Break Crowds

As the demand for travel returns, airports and airlines have been contending with some staffing issues in the wake of the global health crisis. Now, TSA screenings have surpassed 2019 levels as we near the 4th of July.

According to CNBC, the TSA screened 2.15 million people on Thursday. That’s nearly 3% more than were screened on July 1st, 2019. This is the first time since the start of the global health crisis that screenings have exceeded 2019 levels.

We’re expecting high crowds in Disney World this weekend, but it seems travel is up around the country heading into the holiday. This milestone shows a surge in air travel demand following the rollout of vaccines.

Still, screening levels are not expected to hold above the 2019 figures. July 1st of 2019 was a Monday and low point for the week, whereas July 1st, 2021 was a busier day.

When traveling, you may also run into more hiccups than usual as demand pushes airlines past their current supply capabilities in some cases. Some airlines have canceled flights and delays have been a common occurrence.

When traveling to or from Disney World, make sure you budget extra time for potential security lines and flight delays. You may get lucky and avoid them, but they are a possibility at this time. As always, stay tuned to DFB for the latest updates and how they affect your Disney trip.
