The Flavors of Florida event is officially underway in Disney Springs!
During this event, you can get all kinds of limited-time eats inspired by the Sunshine State at various restaurants in Disney Springs. So far, we’ve had fried gator, frog legs, an orange blossom cupcake, and MORE! Recently we stopped by Splitsville’s Bamboo Bar to check out their offerings for Flavors of Florida, and we have a feeling sushi fans will REALLY enjoy one of them!
Over at Splitsville’s Bamboo Bar you’ll actually find 2 offerings listed as part of Flavors of Florida. First, let’s tackle the sushi!! As part of Flavors of Florida, you’ll be able to grab a Golden Spider Roll at the Bamboo Bar. This roll features tempura-fried soft-shell crab, cucumber, and avocado wrapped in soy paper and sushi rice topped with diced mango, honey wasabi, eel sauce, and micro greens.
Note that the Golden Spider Roll appears to have been added to Splitsville’s standard menu a bit earlier this year, but it is listed for the Bamboo Bar as part of Flavors of Florida so we had to give it a try!
We’ll start by saying this sushi is seriously GORGEOUS. They used a pink soy paper instead of nori and it just adds a beautiful layer of color to the dish.
The sushi itself was very fresh and loaded with sushi rice that was cooked perfectly. The soft-shell crab was wonderful and didn’t taste fishy at all. It was very lightly battered in the tempura batter, but still had a nice crunch.
Also, if you’re wondering why it’s called Spider Sushi, take a look at the crab legs sticking out on that end piece!
Obviously, there’s no spider IN this sushi but the crab legs peeking out of the end piece totally look like a spider.
In our roll, the avocado was on the top instead of being wrapped in with the crab and cucumber, and we actually think that made for a great presentation and we still got the flavor of avocado in every bite.
We especially loved the little chunks of fresh mango included with this roll. Overall, the flavors paired really nicely with the eel sauce and the honey wasabi. The honey wasabi was not very spicy at all so we actually added wasabi to our soy sauce to give it a little extra kick! So, if you aren’t a huge fan of spice don’t necessarily let the honey wasabi scare you.
The micro greens on top seemed to be more for decoration as they didn’t really add anything to the dish. But, they also didn’t take anything away from the dish either.
Overall, our reporter said they would totally order this sushi again! If you don’t like sushi or you don’t like soft-shell crab, then this dish isn’t for you. But, if you like sushi and soft-shell crab, we think you should totally give this a try! You can get it right now during the Flavors of Florida event for $20.
Next, we move to the drink that the Bamboo Bar has listed as a Flavors of Florida offering — the Hemingway Daiquiri. This drink is made with dark rum, maraschino liqueur, fresh lime and grapefruit juices, and splash of house made grenadine, and is served in a coupe glass.
We thought this drink was actually very interesting! We definitely tasted the dark rum and the maraschino liqueur, but the grapefruit juice balance it all out. There is some sweetness from the grenadine, but by blending it all together, the flavors work really well.
We enjoyed it, but we will say it is a very unique drink!
We do think that you do need to enjoy some tartness in your drink to really like this one though. Many rum drinks can be VERY sweet. Because of the grapefruit and lime juice, there’s definitely an added tartness to this one, so if you’re looking for a very sweet rum drink, this is probably not a good choice for you.
But, if you like dark rum and you’re not wanting a super sweet drink or a rum and Coke, this could be a fun option. You can get it for $13.
Overall, we really enjoyed these items and think they’re fun offerings that really capture that sense of all things Florida. We could just picture ourselves on a boat in Key West enjoying these.
If you want to try them, be sure to stop by the Bamboo Bar while they’re available. Keep in mind that Flavors of Florida will be going on through August 12th at Disney Springs.
We’ll continue to keep an eye out for more new items all around Disney World and let you know what we find!
