It’s time for another adventure in my mission to try all of the treats offered at Kringla Bakeri og Kafe in EPCOT’s Norway pavilion. It’s good to have goals, after all, and if you’re visiting the park in between a festival, it’s good to know what’s available year-round.
First, I must take a moment of remembrance for my beloved Kransekake. The delightful almond cake-like cookie debuted earlier this year, and has, unfortunately, been replaced with a Chocolate Mickey Tart. Don’t get me wrong; I’m sure that Mickey and his tart are lovely, but I’d place money on the fact that the tart’s no Kransekake. I could end up eating my words on that, so stay tuned.
Today’s treat is a standard on the menu that I’ve just never taken the time to stop and enjoy. And, spoiler alert, if you enjoy a good apple cake, this is definitely a treat you want to stop and enjoy.
The Eplekake is a Norwegian-style apple cake, and comes with the option of topping the whole shebang with a generous portion of caramel drizzle. When I was debating about the caramel drizzle, the cast member serving me the Eplekake looked at me with wide eyes as if to say YES, LADY, YOU WANT THE CARAMEL DRIZZLE. I went with her suggestion, and was so glad that I did.
First things first: the Eplekake is a lovely, moist, spice-laden apple cake. Golden raisins can be found in the cake itself (although not a ton of them, so you can easily eat around them if they’re not your favorite), and thinly sliced apples are baked into the top of the cake. The entire thing is dusted with powdered sugar, and yes, you want the caramel drizzle. It brings the whole thing together.
If you’re looking for a little taste of something different in the middle of your EPCOT day, this is your snack. It’s light and dreamy (can a cake be dreamy? I think so.) and it’s completely sharable.
The treat is sweet without being overly so, which is a theme that I’ve found running throughout my adventures eating through the menu at Kringla. It’s sweet without being cloying, and even on the hottest day (I can speak from personal experience here), it’ll be something fun to try without weighing you down.
The spices used in the Eplekake, along with the great care taken during its construction, elevate this snack above other baked goods that you might see as you traverse the Walt Disney World parks. If apples are your thing, you’re gonna love this.
The Eplekake is available for $4.49, and a shaded seating area (so important on these hot August days) can be found just behind the cafe. My favorite Norway spot, however, in under the awning near Elsa and Anna’s Sommerhus. I love getting to hear the sisters interact with guests on the front lawn of the house. It just doesn’t get more charming.
What’s your favorite EPCOT treat? Let me know in the comment section below. I’m always up for a new snack!
