P&J’s Takeout at Fort Wilderness Cabins & Campgrounds is a convenient spot to grab a quick bite! Known for delicious cupcakes and American classics, P&J’s is a popular spot for people staying at the resort (and TBH, since this resort is kind of a world of its own, there’s a chance you’ve never heard of it if you haven’t stayed here!).

We usually check this spot out for a new snack, cupcake, or fancy specialty coffee, but we realized it had been a while since we’ve had a full meal here! So, we stopped by to check it out and see if it’s as delicious as we remember!

Atmosphere

Much like the rest of Fort Wilderness Cabins & Campgrounds, P&J’s Takeout is themed after the log cabins of the frontier! Located next to Trail’s End and Crockett’s Tavern, you can conveniently find this spot at the Fort Wilderness Settlement area of the resort.

Just as the name implies, P&J’s is known for takeout. So guests can order meals through Mobile Order to collect and take them back to their cabin or campground or find one of many outdoor dining options around to have a picnic. Inside, you’ll find a number of pick-up counters to collect your order designed with a pioneer style in mind.

You’ll also be able to take a look at P&J’s food display, which will give you a peek at what pre-made items are available.

Hot coffee, tea, and iced tea are all available on tap.

You can also pick up a specialty coffee or refillable mug here.

And of course, there’s plenty of condiments. You’ll be able to grab everything you could possibly need here to go with your meal.

There’s also a coffee station so you can customize your coffee and get exactly how you like it.

Before we chow down on some delicious eats, let’s take a look at the selections! P&J’s Takeout offers Family Meals like the Fried Chicken 8-Piece Meal, Entrées like Barbecued Pulled Pork, and Pepperoni Pizza…

To start off our meal, we got the Hot Strawberry Shortcake Latte, which is a Hot Latte with a shot of Espresso, Strawberry Syrup, and Vanilla topped with Whipped Cream, Dried Strawberry, and Crumbled Vanilla Wafers featuring Joffrey’s Coffee for $4.99.

This drink wasn’t as sweet as we expected! The espresso was just as strong as the strawberry syrup, which made it surprisingly balanced. This is a unique spin on your morning coffee, but the fruity berry flavor mixed with, well, coffee might not be for everyone. It was enjoyable to drink, but we’d still reach for a more traditional latte over this in the long run. Although we wouldn’t get it again, it was a fun and unique drink!

A note on taking out the actual food here: P&J’s makes picking up your orders easy. The takeout boxes are sturdy and can easily be stacked if you’re collecting more than one meal. There are also bags with sturdy handles available at the pickup window to make the takeout process that much smoother to stack the boxes in a bag and toss in any condiments and takeout silverware you need. They also provide some paper plates, if you plan to share a meal or don’t want to eat right out of the box (though we’re pretty sure true pioneers would eat right out of the box. Pioneers got a lot of take out back in the day, right? ).

For our main meal, we got the Fried Chicken 2-Piece Meal served with Cornbread, Coleslaw, and Mashed Potatoes with Gravy for $10.49 (this dish comes with a TON of food for a low price)!

The fried chicken is the same classic recipe you’ll get at Hoop-Dee-Doo Revue and that used to be served at Trail’s End, both also on-site at Fort Wilderness. We were glad to see that we received dark meat, a drumstick and a thigh, which means more flavor! Juicy and tender and coated in the crispy, seasoned breading, this fried chicken is some of the best in the wilderness. We ate ours soon after receiving it but we suspect if you left it in the box too long transporting it, your chicken might get a little soggy. Just something to keep in mind if you want maximum chicken crunch (and really, who doesn’t?).

The Cornbread, as we mentioned before, is the same classic loaf you’ll receive at Hoop-Dee-Doo Revue and served at Trail’s End (we’re sensing a theme…). It is on the sweet side, so if you’re the type of person who likes honey on their cornbread, you might really enjoy it (and it might not need extra honey!). This was the perfect addition to the meal and had just the right amount of moisture when you added some butter! It was soft and delicate inside but had that nice little crunch around the edges from the baking pan. What can we say, we love cornbread! Our only critique would be MORE, but that’s just us being cornbread-greedy. 

The Mashed Potatoes were excellent! And look at the portion size! It’s a lot of potatoes-for-your-buck! There were a couple of lumps in there, so these were more rustic “homemade” mashed potatoes, instead of a sophisticated whipped potato. But what can you expect when you’re deep in the wilderness, eating classic pioneer foods? Pretty sure chuck wagons back in the day weren’t toting immersion blenders or potato ricers. We don’t remember that in Oregon Trail. Overall these potatoes were creamy, buttery, and indulgent when paired with the gravy.

The Coleslaw was also well done and wasn’t overdressed. The veggies were crisp and fresh, the dressing was creamy and tangy, without being overpowering and we loved that the freshness that it contributed to the meal. Is it mind-blowing, best evah coleslaw? No. But it was good and a nice side on this meal.

To finish off our meal, we got the Strawberry Shortcake for $5.99! It seems apropos, we started the meal with a Strawberry Shortcake Latte, so why not bookend the meal and finish with this dessert classic? And, truthfully, no regrets! This was absolutely fabulous! The cake was moist and we were left wanting more (but honestly, who doesn’t want more dessert?). There was plenty of whipped cream and strawberry compote to keep each bite interesting. This is about as “no muss, no fuss” of a dessert you can get, and, in this case, that’s an awesome thing. Grab a spoon and just dig in. A great way to end our meal at P&J’s Takeout.

Although it might not be the most glamorous or dazzling, this was a great meal!

Quite a hearty meal for a price even the pioneers would approve!

Nosh or Not

Grab P&J’s Takeout If…

• You’re looking for classic American and BBQ-type food. P&J’s offers classic dishes like fried chicken, pizza, and ribs!
• You’re staying at Fort Wilderness. This spot is conveniently located, especially if you’re nearby. If you’re roughin’ it in a tent, cabin, or RV, this is a solid option for a quick, easy meal.
• You just want to pick up and go. This restaurant doesn’t necessarily have dedicated seating, so it’s best if you have somewhere nearby to eat in mind.

Try Something Else If…

• You’re looking for adventurous food. P&J’s mostly has familiar dishes, don’t expect anything crazy here!
• You’re far away from Fort Wilderness. It can be quite a trek. Seriously, you’ll either need to take the boat launch from Magic Kingdom or the nearby Contemporary or Wilderness Lodge Resorts, or take a bus (or drive) to the Fort Wilderness Campgrounds and then navigate the internal bus route to get to this spot. Bringing a whole new meaning to the concept of “hidden gem”. So it might not be worth it unless you’re nearby.
• You want to sit down and eat. Like we said before, the restaurant doesn’t have a dedicated seating area, but there are tables nearby!

Overall

P&J’s Takeout is a great place if you’re on the go and want to enjoy the flavors of Trail’s End or the still closed Hoop-Dee-Doo Musical Revue! With barbecue classics and American favorites, this menu can please most palates. The prices are surprisingly good for some of the entrees. If you’re finding a full adult entree meal (with multiple sides!) for about 10 bucks in Disney World, you’ve struck gold. Seriously, a family dinner meal for 2-4 people for 25 bucks is HUGE in Disney World. Plus the food is quite tasty and well prepared to boot. We enjoyed our meal at P&J’s, but it wasn’t anything particularly special. The dishes are familiar, the location is convenient if you’re nearby, the prices are downright reasonable (even for Disney!) for the quantity of food you receive, and the Mobile Order service is quick.

The big downfall here is the location. Most Disney World guests don’t venture over to Fort Wilderness (unless they’re staying here!) and, due to the design of the resort and campground, it can be a pain to navigate. You can’t just drive up, park, and get your meal. You have to kind of hunt this place down. We’re not saying you should actively seek out P&J’s necessarily, but, if you’re nearby, it’s a solid option for a meal. This is a great pick for anyone staying at Fort Wilderness and we definitely recommend it if you’re looking for a quick meal that’ll make everyone happy!
