PHOTOS: One Ride Gets Demolished While Others Make Progress in Disney World

It’s that time of the week again where we check in on the latest construction progress around Disney World!

Disney World just turned 50!

And, while LOTS of projects wrapped up last week with the debut of the 50th-anniversary celebrations, there are still a few things that Disney is working on. So, now we’re bringing you a look at construction on some upcoming attractions in TWO parks, a ride that is getting demolished, and more!

Magic Kingdom

TRON: Lightcycle Run

We’ve been keeping track of the progress over on Magic Kingdom’s newest roller coaster, TRON: Lightcycle Run, for quite some time now and this week we stopped by to see what else was going on. And, there’s wasn’t too much change to see on the outside.

Another look at TRON construction

The ride will be both an indoor and outdoor experience, so we’ve only got a view of half the work being done. But, we can’t stress enough just how GIANT this roller coaster really is.

Another look at TRON from Tomorrowland

The area still looks like an active construction site and Disney hasn’t released any information on when we could get to board a lightcycle yet, but we’re always keeping an eye out for updates!

Fantasyland

Last week we also noticed that some of the ground in Fantasyland had been scored in preparation to be redone, and this week there was some more floor work going on closer to Pinocchio’s Village Haus.

A large area of concrete was blocked off, making it a bit more of a tight squeeze to get into the Quick Service restaurant during busier times of the day.

Liberty Square

And, speaking of ground that is being replaced in Magic Kingdom, we also spotted some new grey concrete being installed over in Liberty Square.

Wait a minute…

If you’re not familiar, the ground in Liberty Square has been a fun historical hidden detail, representing the sewage system that would have been in place during colonial times (if you’re catching our drift). But, the new cement that’s going in seems to be eliminating this hidden secret.

Ferry Boat

And, on our way back to the Transportation and Ticketing Center, we noticed that Disney is constructing a new gangway at the Magic Kingdom dock.

A second level platform is being installed

Disney hasn’t begun using this just yet, but once it is installed it will provide access to the second floor of the Ferry Boat without needing to use the stairs.

EPCOT

Morocco Pavilion

Over in EPCOT, we’ve seen quite a bit of construction work in the Morocco Pavilion and it looks like it’s not done just yet! This week the gift shop that is located on World Showcase Lagoon (Souk-al-Magreb) was closed up as Disney does some refurbishment work inside.

The market is closed

We’re not expecting any major updates for this location, so it is likely just getting some TLC before it reopens for guests once again. But, luckily the closure isn’t impacting our ability to get a snack at Oasis Sweets & Sips!

World Celebration

As part of the 50th-anniversary celebrations, EPCOT’s new “neighborhoods” officially debuted, bringing us another big step closer to the completion of the EPCOT Transformation. So, now instead of Future World at the front of the park, we’re watching as all the new attractions, shops, and experiences make their way into World Celebration (which is in the center). And, this week we noticed that there were a few more things sticking up over the construction walls!

There’s something peeking out now

While you can’t see much more of the construction when you’re walking around the park, we did get a pretty good view of what work is underway from the monorail on our way in, and…well…it’s still a whole lot of dirt.

World Celebration Construction

Currently, World Celebration is home to Creations Shop, Spaceship Earth, the EPCOT Experience, and the Imagination Pavilion and soon it will also include new things like Dreamers Point (which will have a new statue of Walt Disney).

Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind

We also got another look at the construction over at the new roller coaster coming to EPCOT, Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind. Previously, we had been seeing more cement installed just out front of the entrance…

Construction progress at Cosmic Rewind as of August 2021

…and the rest of the area seems to be coming along! Now you can see that even more concrete has been installed where the Xandarian Ship will someday be located and there are some newly planted trees and bushes in the area.

Recent Guardians Construction

After a LONG wait, we finally know that Guardians of the Galaxy will be debuting sometime in 2022, so we’ll be on the lookout for more milestones (and an opening date)!

Disney’s Animal Kingdom

DinoLand, U.S.A.

A few weeks ago, we saw construction walls arrive around Primevil Whirl in Disney’s Animal Kingdom, and the deconstruction of the ride continues.

Lots of construction here

Currently, the sign is still up for the ride at what used to be the entrance, but much of the track has been taken apart.

Well, that’s it for another week of construction progress! Of course, we’ll continue to keep an eye out for more updates around the parks and resorts so be sure to stay tuned to DFB for the latest!
