While Disney World lost its Toontown area some years ago, Mickey’s Toontown is a spot Disney fans can visit over at Disneyland Park.
For some time, part of this side of the park has been under a bit of construction as Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway attraction is being built there. But soon, some BIG changes will be coming to Toontown in Disneyland.
According to an announcement just posted by Disney, there will be an “ambitious reimagining of Mickey’s Toontown” which will debut in early 2023. The news was shared today at the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions (IAAPA) Expo.
Disney has shared that Imagineers are working to create new, interactive experiences in this space so “families and young children can have more opportunities to play together inside Disneyland park.”
As part of this transformation, Mickey’s Toontown will become a “vibrant symphony of sights, sounds, and sensations.” It will have new play experiences, along with open, grassy areas where guests can play and unplug. There will be landscaping in place for “spontaneous family play and parental relaxation.”
There will be more play activities in this space than ever before. There will be experiences for active play, tactile play, and more — giving kids the chance to “play, slide, spin, splash, touch and listen.”
One of the new spaces that will debut at the transformed Mickey’s Toontown is called “CenTOONial Park.” It’ll actually be the first space guests see when they enter the transformed space. It’ll have 2 interactive play experiences.
At the center, there will be a fountain designed for play, and that fountain will become an icon for Mickey’s Toontown. The fountain will have water tables at its base and guests will be able to play with the water. At night, Disney says the “fountain will be brought to life in a unique spectacle.”
There will also be a “dreaming tree” nearby that is inspired by the tree Walt Disney would daydream under when he was younger. The sculpted tree roots will give kids the chance to play, crawl, and explore.
Mickey’s Toontown will still be home to lots of Disney characters, including Mickey, Minnie, Goofy, Donald, and more, so you don’t need to worry about that.
In order to make this transformation a reality, Mickey’s Toontown will CLOSE in March of 2022. It will then reopen in early 2023 with the new Runaway Railway ride.
We’ll keep an eye out for more updates on this space and let you know what we find!
