At Destination D23 this past weekend, a panel was held all about Walt Disney World transportation. Fittingly named “Planes, Trains, and Monorails,” the panelists discussed the past, present, and future of some of the resort’s most iconic transportation, including the Walt Disney World Railroad.
When an Imagineer revealed the recently refurbished Engine 1, the Walter E. Disney, they also mentioned that even “more surprises” are in store when the Railroad eventually reopens.
Though no specifics or reopening dates were announced, we already know changes had to be made to the classic attraction to accommodate the construction of TRON Lightcycle / Run. The Railroad closed in December 2018, meaning we are rapidly approaching three years without the train at the Magic Kingdom.
Even though no details were given, it’s likely safe to assume that the Imagineers mean more than just the new track route. It’s possible new or enhanced scenes will be added before the Railroad reopens.
Disney was conspicuously silent about a timeline for TRON Lightcycle / Run and the Walt Disney World Railroad amidst the many announcements at D23, but as always, we will continue to watch the construction at both attractions closely.
