Just How REAL Are the Lightsabers at Disney’s Star Wars Hotel?

We’re just a few months away from the opening of the Star Wars hotel (Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser) in March of 2022.

As part of this cruise-type experience, guests will get the chance to eat at unique spots, interact with Star Wars characters, and more. One of the most anticipated parts of the experience is the ability for guests to train with a lightsaber. We’ve gotten some details about this experience before, but now we’ve got more exciting news to share with you!

As part of the Galactic Starcruiser experience, guests will get to participate in an immersive and interactive lightsaber training experience. We’ve even dug into how the experience will work before.

Disney has also shared that it will involve facing off against a remote training device and that it will be limited to guests at least 7 years of age and older. But the good news is that everyone 7 years or older, will be scheduled for lightsaber training during their time on the Galactic Starcruiser.

Recently, however, Disney revealed some MORE details about what this lightsaber training will look and feel like. From what we’ve seen, it appears the lightsaber training will be designed a bit more for younger guests. According to SYFY, “As an absolute novice I felt strange wielding the weapon for the first time, but even still, did not find the experience to be overtly difficult.”

There will be 4 training stations built into the walls of the space where guests can get in some target practice and show off their lightsaber skills. There are also some special effects and items built into the walls to set off some interesting effects for fans to enjoy!

In essence, this is how the training works: There will be a laser that will shoot out from a wall-mounted training station. That laser will point at a specific spot and it will be up to you to move your lightsaber toward that laser. Think of it almost like a whack-a-mole-type game where you’re trying to meet the laser as quickly as you can with your lightsaber. From what Disney has previously suggested, there will be fiber optic items built into a wall in the space that will sort of point guests toward where the next laser will emerge from. That will help you get the chance to anticipate and sort of see where the next laser will be.

According to GameSpot, the training starts off slow (much like in a video game) to give guests a feel for how everything works. It will then ramp up to Jedi Level to the point that you’ll have to anticipate where the lasers will fire next.

Guests will need to know that the lightsabers used for training are not the cool ones Disney showed off previously that emit and retreat into the blade — that one will be used exclusively by performers. Instead, guests will be given a lightweight replica with a fixed blade. However, once guests power it up, it still has all the sounds and vibrations. IGN wrote that the lightsaber feels a lot like the Force FX lightsaber, although the training lightsaber is a little shorter. However, note that this training lightsaber will NOT be available for sale.

But, you won’t just be able to use lightsabers as part of the training experience. But according to starwars.com, there will also be shields. It’s possible these will be more beneficial and fun for those who are younger, as it is generally easier to block the laser with a shield, rather than a lightsaber.

According to GameSpot, Senior R&D Imagineer Sara Thatcher did stress during playtesting of the experience that the lightsaber training was “the furthest from its final form.” So it’s likely that many of the features Disney previously revealed have not yet been implemented yet, including the ability to use the Force to anticipate lasers once gameplay levels up

Overall, the experience sounds very interesting. We’ll be curious to test it out in person and see what it’s like once the hotel opens. We’ll keep an eye out for more Star Wars Hotel news and let you know what we find. To learn more, check out some of our links below!
