If you’re planning to visit Disney World, you might be thinking of using Disney transportation during your trip.
Monorail Time
One of the most beloved forms of transportation is the Disney World Monorail. The monorail is iconic, fun, and convenient. But, the monorail isn’t perfect. It can experience technical issues and go “down” for extended periods. Today, we got caught in the middle of a technical issue with one monorail line that caused us quite the delay.
Let’s start at the beginning. We started our day by parking at Magic Kingdom’s Transportation and Ticket Center (“TTC”) parking lot. From there, we took a monorail over to Magic Kingdom.

We spent some time in Magic Kingdom and then were ready to get back to the TTC. We were taking the express monorail back from Magic Kingdom to the TTC, when we got stuck for a few minutes.

We were at a standstill for about 5 minutes at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa. A Cast Member then came on the loudspeaker and announced that Monorail Yellow (which we had just been on earlier that day!) was having some technical issues and that we were in a holding pattern.

The Cast Member then came back on the loudspeaker a few moments later and indicated that they would be taking us back to Magic Kingdom’s station, and that we would have to get off and take another monorail to the TTC. Interesting. We then started moving backwards toward Magic Kingdom.

We then hopped onto Monorail Gold on the resort monorail line. We also saw that the Express Monorail had been shut down at the time.

When we reached the TTC, we saw that Monorail Yellow was still at the station there.

Ultimately, our trip from Magic Kingdom to the TTC (which is typically fairly fast) took us close to 45 minutes today due to the delays!
Well, That Took Longer Than Expected
It’s a good reminder to leave with PLENTY of time if you’re planning to head to another spot in Disney World that requires you to leave the park you’re in.
Whether you’ll be taking a bus, a boat, the monorail, or some other form of transportation, things can happen. Technical issues can arise, or other situations can take place that cause a delay in your trip to your next destination.
Monorail Issues Can Lead to Some Big Crowds
If you’re rushing to make it to a dining reservation, a Genie+ or Individual Attraction Selection Lightning Lane return time, or something of that nature, a delay of this kind can seriously mess up your plans and cause a LOT of stress.
Try to Give Yourself Enough Time
So, if you’re planning to hop between parks or resorts or other spots on property and have a set time by which you MUST be at another spot, be sure to give yourself at least an hour (if not more) in terms of transportation/wiggle room.
If you arrive early, then you can simply take advantage of other things in the park/resort (just be sure that it’s after Park Hopping time has started if you’ll be hopping parks). If you do end up getting delayed along the way, then at least you’ll have that time built into your schedule.
Build in Travel Time
And, if all goes wrong, be sure to speak with a Cast Member and see if there’s anything they can do to help.
You Can Ask for Help
Stay flexible, as much as you can, so you can quickly switch to another form of transportation and get where you need to go! This is also a good reminder to bring those chargers so you can stay in contact with your party, and never hop on any form of transportation (or ride) if you have to use the restroom (better to go beforehand just in case you do get a bit delayed!).
