Four new holiday treats have debuted at Gasparilla Island Grill at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa, so we stopped by to try them out.
Happy Holidays Cake Pop – $7.99
Triple Chocolate Cake Pop enrobed in White Chocolate with Festive Winter Décor
Holy chocolate, Batman! When they say triple chocolate, they are not kidding, and we don’t think they’re even counting the white chocolate. It’s a very simple cake pop, and if you love rich, nearly fudge levels of chocolate, this is a great treat. If you’re looking for something milder, stay away.
S’mores Cookie – $5.99
Graham Cracker Crumbles and Chocolate Chip Cookie piled with Toasted Marshmallows and M&M’S®
This is mostly a giant, soft chocolate chip cookie. The marshmallow is ever-so-lightly toasted and pairs really well with the cookie. They were right to use the marshmallow in moderation. The graham cracker crumbs don’t come through, though, and the M&Ms add a texture and artificial chocolate taste that we would have rather done without. For what this is — a cookie with some marshmallows — it’s done well and won’t offend those who don’t particularly like marshmallows.
Red Velvet Wreath Cupcake – $5.99
Red Velvet Cupcake filled with Cream Cheese Mousse and topped with a Vanilla Buttercream Wreath and Chocolate Bow
This is by no means a “bad” cupcake, but we aren’t quite sure who it’s for. The cupcake itself was moist, although not particularly flavorful. The cream cheese mousse filling was outstanding; creamy and thick with an excellent flavor. The cupcake is entirely topped with vanilla buttercream, not just the wreath. The frosting is basic and mostly forgettable, but those who prefer a lighter texture will enjoy it. We now have a combination of textures and tastes that don’t do anything special together, and we’re left wishing they would have gone one direction or the other.
Very Merry Minnie Mouse Cupcake – $5.99
Chocolate Cupcake filled with Cookies n’ Cream Mousse and topped with Ganache-dipped Buttercream, Cookie Ears, and Chocolate Holiday Bow
This was our favorite of the four. Like the wreath cupcake, the cake was tender and moist, with this one having a gentle chocolate taste. The cookies and cream mousse filling was pleasing; it’s on the lighter side but has a tiny bit of pleasant crunch from the cookies. The buttercream topping the cupcake is certainly on the richer side, but not as extreme as the cake pop. Unlike the wreath cupcake, you end up with a combination of types of chocolate and cookies and cream, which do actually work well together, making for a dynamic combination instead of an odd pairing.
