While most guests flock to Satu’li Canteen for their delicious hearty noodle or rice bowls, the quick service location in Pandora – The World of Avatar is also well known for its mousse desserts. Colorful, dome-like, and with an otherworldly sheen, these creative treats are offered year-round in the restaurant’s signature blueberry flavor, with special limited-time flavors, like pumpkin spice, making brief appearances over the seasons. This year, they’ve opted to bring back the peppermint flavor, which we first tried in 2019! So let’s venture past the Amp Santa Mech Suit and head on in to try this year’s returning favorite, the White Chocolate Peppermint Cream Cheese Mousse.
White Chocolate Peppermint Cream Cheese Mousse – $5.49
White-Chocolate Peppermint Cream Cheese Mousse with Peppermint Sauce and Chocolate Cookie Crumbles
The dessert is plated very nicely, with a smear of peppermint frosting and a spoonful of chocolate cookie crumbles framing the crisp white dome. The red gel specks against the white dome look slightly macabre for a holiday dessert, but they try to keep things cheerful with a tiny red and white meringue cookie and a dark chocolate piece (that we can’t help but refer to as Pringle-shaped.)
While all of the components are somewhat deconstructed, you’re encouraged to scrape along the plate to get everything onto the spoon for the full combination of flavors.
We came at this dessert from an interesting perspective in that we typically dislike mousse desserts, but love anything peppermint-flavored. On the other hand, we had other people in our tasting crew who didn’t have anything against mousse desserts, but hated minty flavors. We say both can potentially enjoy this, so long as you tread carefully along the plate.
Most of the minty flavors are concentrated inside these oozing bits of peppermint candy, and along the red frosting stripe. The meringue cookie, while candy striped, is just a plain, crisp meringue cookie. The chocolate topper is dark chocolate, but not minty whatsoever. And the interior of the mousse is just silky, only slightly minty cream cheese mousse.
Do note that while this is listed as a white chocolate mousse, we didn’t pick up any of the cloying sweetness that usually comes with it. Between the cookie crumbles and the creamy mousse interior, we’d liken it to more of a grown-up peppermint cookies and cream flavor, making for a delicious, refreshing combination.
One thing that stood out was the quality of the chocolate topper. Usually these are pretty pedestrian, or only added in for visual flair, but the chocolate used is fairly dark and almost Godiva-like in quality. We appreciate Satu’li Canteen for putting purpose in all elements of the dish.
As far as textures go (and this is where we were most hesitant out of fear that it’d be gritty or gelatinous), this mousse was perfect. It was soft, but just creamy enough that it could hold its own on the spoon when paired with the cookie crumbs or frosting. Usually the base cake layer that’s used as a pedestal of sorts is either dry or flavorless (or both), but it was incredibly moist and sweet.
For $5.29, you can get a pretty elevated, dare we say table-service quality seasonal dessert here, so be sure to stop in on your next visit to Pandora to give this a try!
