We’ve eaten in space at Disney World and soon we’re going to get to STAY in space aboard the Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser!

The new Star Wars hotel is set to make its very first voyage on March 1st, 2022 and we’ve been getting a ton of details about the one-of-a-kind experience leading up to its big debut. We’ve brought you everything from what the cabins will look like, to what you’ll be eating (including BLUE SHRIMP), what you’ll be able to do, and who you’ll be able to see (or even become!) on the 2-night “immersive adventure.” And, while Disney has been consistently giving us more sneak peeks, one thing that hasn’t stayed consistent is the reservation calendar, which is making some guests wonder — are people opting to cancel their reservations already? Let’s take a look at what we’re seeing.

Early bookings for Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser opened up on October 7th, 2021 to select groups, like Disney Vacation Club members, Annual Passholders, and Club 33 members. And, by the time that general registrations were available, almost all of March was sold out, except for the 31st, and select dates in April and May were unavailable. So, needless to say, the hotel was looking pretty popular!

And, dates continued to sell out into the first week of November, with April completely booking up and availability in May becoming even more limited.

So, if you were booking your stay early, you really needed to be planning to visit sometime in July, August, or September to have the most choice.

And, LITERAL days later, even June filled up, leaving one departure date for the entire month.

But, the availability calendar has fluctuated quite a bit ever since, with dates (and even months!) opening up and then selling out…and then opening up again. For example, on November 30th, 2021 there were only two departure dates available in May…

…and the entire month of May then quickly sold out as of December 2nd, 2021…

…but just 12 days later, there are many more dates to pick from once again. And, you can even look at March (which is the first month that the hotel will be open) to see more proof of the fluctuation in bookings.

So, what exactly is going on here? Well, there are a few things that could be happening. First up, Disney has been pretty upfront about the fact that availability is subject to change and that the calendar is only updated periodically. You can check just below the calendar to see the exact date and time that it was last updated, but it can only be trusted to a certain extent. As we know, Disney’s availability is constantly changing no matter what you’re trying to book whether it’s due to cancellations or Disney simply opening up more reservations.

Another thing to note is that Disney is requiring that guests make their final payment 90 days in advance and those who choose to cancel will only receive a full refund if they cancel 90+ days out. Believe it or not, we’re already less than 90 days out from March 1st, 2022, so many of those March dates that are opening up could be related to cancellations.

But WHY would someone cancel their trip to space? The Star Wars hotel will definitely be unlike anything Disney fans have seen or experienced before, but it comes at a pretty hefty price tag. With the rate that reservations were booking up at first, it’s possible that some guests acted quickly to scoop up a spot without really thinking through whether they 100% wanted to commit or not. So, be it the price of the hotel, scheduling conflicts, or just a growing disinterest in experiencing the experience after seeing more details, people could simply be canceling.

Disney has not revealed any details about why availability is suddenly wide open for dates that were previously booked. But, if you’ve been thinking about booking a stay then you’re in luck if you book now!
