‘Tale of the Lion King’ Returning in Early Summer to Disneyland, Auditions Open

We learned last year that “Tale of the Lion King” — which originally debuted in 2019 — would be returning to Disneyland Resort, this time taking over the Fantasyland Theatre. The show is set to return in early summer, according to the Disney Auditions website.

Disney is currently accepting online submissions for vocalists, dancers, and drummers “of all genders, abilities, types, and ethnicities to represent the rich culture and heritage of Africa.” Rehearsals are scheduled to begin in April 2022.

Here are the vocalist roles being cast:

NALA – Joyful, spirited singer/actor with strong musicality and movement ability. Vocal range: Soprano. Style: Contemporary pop/R&B mix. Engaging, dynamic performers to play Nala, an African lioness, as well as various other characters from The Lion King. Adept at making an emotional connection with the audience. All abilities and types welcome.

SIMBA – Joyful, spirited singer/actor with strong musicality and movement ability. Vocal range: Tenor. Style: Contemporary pop/R&B. Engaging, dynamic performers to play Simba, an African lion who becomes a king, as well as various other characters from The Lion King. Adept at making an emotional connection with the audience and a romantic connection with Nala. All abilities and types welcome.

MWONGOZO – Joyful, spirited singer/actor with strong musicality and movement ability. Vocal range: Alto with Soprano II extension. Style: Contemporary pop/R&B. A connection with Gospel, West African, Spiritual, and/or Choral style is ideal. Engaging, dynamic performers to play the lead Storyteller. Earth Mother type. Adept at making an emotional connection with the audience. All abilities, genders, and types welcome.

MUFASA – Joyful, spirited singer/actor with strong musicality and movement ability. Vocal range: Bass. Style: Contemporary pop/R&B. Engaging, dynamic performers to play Mufasa, an African lion king and father of Simba, as well as various other characters from The Lion King. Adept at making an emotional connection with the audience. All abilities and types welcome.

SCAR – Joyful, spirited singer/actor with strong musicality and movement ability who can also play the villain. Vocal range: Baritone/Bass. Style: Contemporary pop/R&B. Engaging, dynamic performers to play Simba’s uncle who schemes for the throne; as well as various other characters from The Lion King. Adept at making an emotional connection with the audience. All abilities and types welcome.

BANZAI/PUMBAA – Joyful, spirited singer/actor with strong musicality and movement ability. Vocal Range: Tenor/Baritone. Style: Contemporary pop/R&B. Engaging, dynamic performers to play Banzai, one of Scar’s hyenas who plot with him take over the Pridelands and Pumbaa, a kindhearted and sensitive warthog who enjoys his simple life of grubs and relaxation; as well as various other characters from The Lion King. Adept at making an emotional connection with the audience and a deadpan sense of humor. All abilities and types welcome.

SHENZI/TIMON – Joyful, spirited singer/actor with strong musicality and movement ability. Vocal Range: Tenor. Style: Contemporary pop/R&B. Engaging, dynamic performers to play Shenzi, one of Scar’s hyenas who plot with him take over the Pridelands and Timon, an outcast meerkat and the stories comic relief; as well as various other characters from The Lion King. Adept at making an emotional connection with the audience and excellent comic timing. All abilities and types welcome.

Here are the dancer and drummer descriptions:

DANCER/SINGER CHORUS – Technically strong dancers who can sing.  Vocal Range: All.  Style: Contemporary pop/R&B.  Adept at making an emotional connection with the audience. All abilities and types welcome. 

DRUMMERS –  Skilled in West African drum technique. Must play the djembe. Ability to play other African percussion a plus (e.g., dundun, various shakers, etc.) as well as mallet instruments.  We are looking for engaging stage performers who we can incorporate into the storytelling, allowing the drums to “help” tell the story.

Submissions must be received by 11:59 p.m. PT on Thursday, January 27, 2022.
