Just as we thought things were finally settling down here at Tokyo Disney Resort, the Omicron variant of COVID-19 has come around to shake things up yet again with a fresh round of capacity cuts and ticket sales suspensions.
As of today, Tokyo Disney Resort has immediately suspended all ticket sales through March 2. Additionally, the park will cut capacity to 20,000 guests per day in line with requests from the Chiba Prefectural Government and the City of Urayasu. Ticket sales will resume with capacity appropriately adjusted on January 21 at 2 p.m. JST. Capacity had been nearly back to normal since around November after Japan’s most recent State of Emergency concluded on September 30.
Unlike the previous quasi-emergency, restaurants within the park will be allowed to remain open until 9 p.m. and, crucially, may serve alcohol until 8 p.m. Reservations for Center Street Coffeehouse and Restaurant Hokusai at Tokyo Disneyland made for after 8 p.m., and for Ristorante di Canaletto at Tokyo DisneySea for after 7:10 p.m. will not be accommodated.
The quasi-emergency is only a first step, but we may see further action as cases of the Omicron variant explode in Japan, despite being able to hold off its surge in cases seen around the rest of the world until after the new year began. Based on the infectiousness of the new variant and the likelihood of breakthrough infections in the vaccinated, the Japanese Government decided not to implement their previous vaccine-or-test mandate plan to allow theme parks to continue operating at full capacity during a quasi-emergency or full State of Emergency.
