Disney loves to use new technology in its parks, movies, and more.
Over the years, we’ve seen things like trackless ride systems and stunning animatronics, and there is even more new and exciting technology on the horizon. Disney is known for trying to advance how they tell stories and create experiences, and soon they will be taking it to a whole new level with the metaverse. And now, the company has put someone in charge of its metaverse!
The Walt Disney Company has appointed executive Mike White to oversee its metaverse strategy, according to Reuters. They say the info was relayed in an email Disney’s CEO Bob Chapek sent to staff Tuesday.
Mike White is an executive in the Media and Entertainment Distribution group and has been named the new role of Senior Vice President of Next Generation Storytelling and Consumer Experiences, according to Reuters. He will help define how consumers will experience Disney’s coming metaverse by working alongside Disney’s creative teams. White has 25 years of technology and leadership experience.
“For nearly 100 years, our company has defined and re-defined entertainment by leveraging technology to bring stories to life in deeper, more impactful ways…Today, we have an opportunity to connect those universes and create an entirely new paradigm for how audiences experience and engage with our stories,” Chapek wrote in the email to staff, according to Reuters.
Bob Chapek has been talking about Disney’s metaverse for a while now. He’s said that the metaverse is “a combination of multiple elements of technology, including virtual reality, augmented reality and video where users ‘live’ within a digital universe.” Disney is already working on a Disney Theme Park metaverse, which would mix visually enhanced physical reality and virtual space.
When asked about the metaverse in a recent interview with CNBC, Chapek said that he views it as “a third dimension of the canvas that we let our creative people paint.” According to Chapek, the metaverse will “take all the great things that [Disney has] as a media company…with Disney+ and use that as a platform for the metaverse.” Chapek also noted that Disney has something that no one else has — the physical world of their parks.
Chapek said, “if the metaverse is the blending of the physical and the digital in one environment, who can do it better than Disney?”
Former Disney CEO Bob Iger also spoke about how Disney’s metaverse could work, but did note that there is a danger there with certain things like toxic behavior and proper monitoring. Stay tuned to DFB for more info and updates on the Disney metaverse.
