Many things have changed with air travel in the past couple years.
There are now mask requirements on planes, we’ve seen several different forms of travel restrictions, many flights have been canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and more. We have seen some airlines add more travel routes in recent months, and now, two popular airlines are actually combing to create “America’s most competitive ultra-low fare airline.”
Frontier Airlines and Spirit Airlines are combining to create a new airline. Both companies tweeted out the news today and also linked to a press release about the merger.
Even more ultra-low fares! Spirit to combine with Frontier, creating America’s most competitive ultra-low fare airline. Together, we’ll invest in innovation & growth bringing more ultra-low fares to travelers in the U.S., Latin America & the Caribbean.https://t.co/S31kp6UvFc pic.twitter.com/yhumBxK4Js

Frontier Airlines’ parent company is actually buying Spirit Airlines in a $2.9 billion cash-and-stock deal that will allow the combined airline to be more competitive against its larger rivals, according to WESH.
The new combined airline will have over 1000 daily flights to over 145 destinations in 19 countries, with over 650 nonstop routes. The company also says this will create 10,000 new direct jobs by 2026.
The merger should increase access to ultra-low fares by adding new routes to underserved communities across the U.S., Latin America, and the Caribbean. The company says they expect to deliver $1 billion in annual consumer savings.
The combined airline will also be America’s Greenest Airline, according to the company. Consumers shouldn’t expect to see any changes to their existing travel reservations or existing tickets.
Spirit and Frontier now rank as the 2nd and 3rd busiest airlines at Orlando International Airport, trailing Southwest, according to the Orlando Sentinel.
