Black History Month has begun, which means “Celebrate Soulfully” is back at Walt Disney World. Special food items will be available for the month of February and we’re starting with the “Soul”-themed cupcake and collard greens at Flame Tree Barbecue in Disney’s Animal Kingdom.
The menu sign for the cupcake includes information about “Soul” and the history of jazz.
The collard greens sign says, “This leafy green vegetable was one of a few vegetables African-Americans were allowed to harvest prior to Emancipation. Afterwards, the inexpensive dish provided sustenance for many. Rich in vitamins and nutrients, this plant earned its place at the table. It symbolizes the harsh past and enrichment of a promising future.”
Both signs have a QR code to scan to learn more about “cooking with soul.”
Celebrate Soulfully Cupcake – $5.99
Vanilla cake with bananas foster filling and vanilla marshmallow buttercream, white chocolate medallion, and crispy pearls
This is a cute, photogenic cupcake. We were asked multiple times about it while we ate.
The medallion on top features Joe Gardner from “Soul” playing the piano, with other colorful instruments around him.
The paper around the medallion has sheet music printed on it.
The medallion isn’t the regular white chocolate we’re used to it. It was like a candied baking version with printed paper over it. It wasn’t the best and was very sugary.
The crispy pearls added more color to the cupcake and a nice, crunchy texture.
The cupcake comes in a blue wrapper and it’s unstable without it.
As soon as we started peeling off the wrapper, the cupcake started to squish under the weight of its top.
The cupcake itself is moist. It’s vanilla flavored and tastes just fine.
The buttercream is also plain vanilla. It was oddly thick in the middle.
The filling is a weird, raw version of bananas foster. It didn’t taste caramelized. It was maybe supposed to hit the stovetop before being put in the cake, but that step was missed.
It’s not terrible, but not what we expected. Overall, it’s an okay cupcake. It’s nothing to write home about and there are better cupcake options available.
Collard Greens – $4.49
We’re sad this isn’t a bigger serving, because it’s the real winner.
There are bits of pork and bacon mixed with the greens that give a heartier bite and add a bit of saltiness.
The greens were cooked well. The meat-to-greens balance was good, and there were some larger pieces of pork.
We would get the collard greens again.
