This February, Disney World is celebrating Black History Month with special movie viewings, musical performances, historical exhibits, and new snacks.
We just spotted a tasty new drink that’s here for the celebration! We’ve seen similar drinks in Disneyland, but this is the official debut of the popular cocktail in Disney World. Let’s see how the east coast version measures up.
Disneyland has the Mint Julep Bar in New Orleans Square, with various flavors of this drink (as well as some very delicious beignets). But the only Mint Julep we’ve seen recently in Disney World has been the Mint Julep Lemonade Slushy at Casey’s Corner in Magic Kingdom. So we’re very excited to let you know that the classic drink has finally made its way to Disney World!
At Thirsty River Bar in Disney’s Animal Kingdom, you can find the Celebrate Soulfully Mint Julep.
This is a pineapple-mint julep, made with Makers Mark bourbon, pineapple juice, simple syrup, and mint, topped with ginger beer. You can get one for $15. It’s inspired by John Dabney‘s original recipe. According to Disney, “Dabney’s success as a bartender allowed him to buy his and his wife’s freedom, leading to business ownership.” The drink is here to celebrate and honor Dabney’s story.
We thought this drink was delicious! Our reporter is a big fan of Mint Juleps in general, and they really enjoyed this one. It was fun and refreshing with the pineapple addition, and the sweetness from the fruit juice is cut by the strong ginger flavor.
Make sure you stir the drink when you get it, otherwise your first sip will probably be mostly ginger beer. But once it’s stirred, we think it’s a well-balanced and tasty cocktail. The bourbon flavor is very subtle, so if you’re looking for a stronger bourbon drink this one might not be for you.
The mint flavor was pretty subtle as well, but we could definitely taste it at the finish. We would’ve loved a little more flavor from the bourbon and mint since those are the flavors we think of with Mint Juleps, but we still loved this drink. We especially appreciated that it wasn’t overly sweet, which is how we like our cocktails.
If you like pineapple and ginger beer, this drink will definitely not disappoint! You can get it at Thirsty River Bar or Restaurantosaurus Lounge in Animal Kingdom.
