Things with Disney+ could be changing.

You’ve probably streamed a whole bunch of movies, tv shows, documentaries, and more on the service, and more new things are on the way. But what if you could watch something LIVE on Disney+? Live sports perhaps? A livestream of a special event? Well, Disney tested that out today in a smaller way and it could mark a big change for the future.

As Yahoo shared, Disney+ ran its FIRST ever test of a livestream recently in the U.S. The livestream was specifically for the 94th Oscar nominations, and was hosted by Leslie Jordan and Tracee Ellis Ross. The event was livestreamed on Disney+ in addition to Hulu, ABC News Live, and some other platforms. Because it was streamed on a few different platforms at the same time, Yahoo notes that this helped to “lessen the burden on Disney+” since not all viewers were turning to one source.

Still, Yahoo notes that this could hint at “future changes” coming for the streaming service. Disney has not yet shared what specific plans it might have for livestreaming things on Disney+ in the future, but it has noted that livestreaming is something the company wants to explore.

According to a Disney spokesperson who spoke to TechCrunch, Disney was “pleased with the results [of the livestreaming test on Disney+] and will continue to test as part of [their] ongoing and iterative approach to deliver the best user experiences to consumers.”

According to Yahoo, there are “some hints that the company could be considering integrating live sports into Disney+ in the U.S.” One thing they shared is that a link had been added to the DisneyPlus.com sitemap that includes text for “ESPN” “sport-event.” Disney+ Hotstar also already offers live sports in India, so Disney could take what they’ve learned from that and bring it to the U.S.

But Disney’s livestreaming doesn’t just have be limited to sports. Yahoo shares that fan events (like the D23 Expo) and more could all be streamed on the service potentially. This could also serve to encourage more individuals to subscribe to the service. Continued subscriber growth is key if Disney wants to hit its big subscriber goals.

There are a lot of possibilities that could come from this livestreaming test and continued testing of that service. We’ll definitely be interested to see how Disney works on this feature in the future and what it might be utilized for in the upcoming months/years. Stay tuned for all the latest updates!
